THE FLASH "TRUE COLORS" REVIEW

Season 4 Episode 13:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of the Flash and in this episode, we see a prison break with the Meta-Humans in Iron Heights, and we also see how team Flash attempts to get Barry out of prison. And this review will mark the return of the best character award and best scene award. So strap in, spoilers ahead for this episode, let's recap.

Opening up the episode is Warden Wolfe showing Amunet Black the five Meta-Humans he is willing to sell to her. Knowing that they are all going to be sold, Barry Allen uses his science skills to create himself an escape. First, he blocks up his toilet, calls in a plumber, takes some of their gear, and then creates an acid like substance to break open his cell. Barry breaks out his cell neighbors, Mina Chaytan (Bison), Sylbert Rundine (Dwarfstar), Ramsey Deacon (Kilgore), and Becky Sharpe (Hazard). The five Metas go down into the sewers below the Meta-human wing to the old prison courtyard where they will get their powers back.

Meanwhile, Iris and Cecile go to Iron Heights to visit Barry, however, he is not there. Warden Wolfe visits the two and tells them that Barry was moved to a different part of the prison, but Cecile reads his mind. Ralph gets a visit from his old friend, Earl Cox, who tells Ralph that he always lets down the people closest to him. At STAR Labs, Cecile tells the team that Wolfe is trafficking Meta-Humans with Amunet. Ralph complains about Earl to team Flash, and while describing him, Ralph shapeshifts into him. The team gets an idea of how to use Ralph to save Barry.

In the sewer's with the Metas, Barry leads the team, however, they come across a plumber in the sewer. Ramsey, Sylbert, and Mina want to kill him, however, Barry steps in and knocks out the plumber, and tells everyone that killing is off the table. Meanwhile, Ralph shapeshifted in Wolfe and guided in his ear by team Flash, Wolfe has a meeting with Amunet. At the meeting, Ralph tells Amunet that the deal is off, however, his shapeshifting starts to screw up and Ralph goes back to regular form and runs away. Amunet has a call with the teal Wolfe and he tells her the deal is still on, while he searches for the Meta-Humans's.

At STAR Labs, Iris tells Cisco, Caitlin, and Ralph that they are going to have to rescue Barry. Ralph says that he can not save Barry after he failed everyone before. Caitan goes to Ralph's apartment and talks to him. She turns to Killer Frost to have another perspective to talk to him, and Ralph gets inspired by Killer Frost's speech. Meanwhile, Barry and the other Meta's wait while Ramsey hacks into a gate. Becky patches up Barry's hand from the punch. Barry tells Becky that her powers do not define her, but she does. Ramsey opens the gate and the Meta-Humans escape to the courtyard, and all have their powers. However, Wolfe shows up with his guards and puts a power dampener on Barry. Ramsey, Mina, and Sylbert are about to take down Wolfe until he reveals that Barry is the Flash. The three Meta-Humans are about to take down Barry, but then Becky stops them. Using her luck, the other three Meta's get knocked down through a chain reaction. Amunet Black shows up and is made at Wolfe. She fires her gauntlet at Becky, however with her luck, the shrapnel hits all the prison guards, and a sleep gas goes off taking down Amunet and Wolfe.

The other Meta's get up, but then the Thinker (in Dominic's body) shows up in his chair. The Meta's do not have their powers. The Thinker then has tentacle arms come out from his chair and they grab onto the Meta-Humans head. Barry starts to run to save Becky, however, he is too late. The Thinker, DeVoe, posses Becky's body. DeVoe in a new body leaves with his chair and Dominic's body. Cisco and Caitlin vibe to Barry and see the mess. Barry tells them to leave as he wants to get out legitimately. Barry then races back to his old cell.

The next day, Cecile and Iris are at the Courthouse, wanting to appeal for Barry. In wheels in DeVoe in his wheelchair. Cecile tells Iris that it is actually Ralph shapeshifted to DeVoe. The judge sees that DeVoe is alive and well and is proven the Central City is full of the impossible, so then Barry is effective, immediately released. Back home, Barry is happy to be with his friends and family. He tells them what happened and how DeVoe took over the Bus Meta's. Cisco then mentions that they have Ralph, who walks in, and the team stares at him. The episode ends with DeVoe (in Becky's body), celebrating his success with Marlize, as the two have some champagne and dance.

Overall, this episode of the Flash was absolutely well crafted. I enjoyed nearly the whole episode. The good in the episode was the plot. Although it was simple in that the Meta-Humans had to escape prison to not be sold, the story was yet effective. We saw the set-up to this situation which was great, I loved seeing Barry put his power of chemistry to work on escaping the cell, I also admired the character's leadership role in the story. We usually see Barry told by his team what to do, but this episode had Barry take the lead of a team of rogues. The side plot of the episode tied into the main story, which was great to see. Ralph getting the prep talk about not being a let down was something that the character needed, especially by Killer Frost. The character at the begging of the episode did seem a little too good, so it was great to see his own doubt in himself, and also seeing him overcome that.

The bad in the episode was the way that Barry was released. It seemed a little too rushed, for what just happened in the episode, but not just that, the fact that this plan feels like it falls flat with no thought is the part the annoys me. What happens when people want to see DeVoe again, does Ralph shapeshift into DeVoe, because that is a lot of time Ralph is missing out on.

To speculate on the ending there for a second; it seems like the team is very suspicious of Ralph, knowing that he is liable to the Thinker. It will be great seeing the team almost try to separate themselves from Ralph, thinking that he could be the Thinker. I am also curious to if DeVoe will take Ralph's powers and/ or body. I do think that DeVoe did not kill the other Meta's, I think that Mina, Sylbert, Ramsey and even Dominic are still alive, although they may not have their powers.
My favorite scene in the episode was the Thinker take over scene in the prison courtyard. When DeVoe showed up in the chair, you knew something was going to do down, and the way that he just started to place the arms on the Meta's was awesome, knocking them down one by one. I loved how Barry was running to save Becky. It was like Barry running to save Iris (HR) from Savitar last season. And like last season, Barry failed to save Becky like he did HR.

Sugar Lyn Beard as Becky Sharpe was definitely my favorite performance of the episode. I liked the development of the character, and the performance given illustrated that. The way that the character was reluctant to leave the prison because she knew she was going to cause harm was a great way to show that this character is at heart a good person, and it makes for an interesting fight for when Barry has to face her body with DeVoe inside. Becuase you want Barry to win, but you also do not want him to hurt Becky because the way she was developed as a good character. I am looking forward to Sugar Lyn Beard playing the character again as DeVoe, and I hope the character lives.

The rest of the cast in the episode was excellent, from the delivery in their performances. Starring in the episode we had Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ the Flash), Chelsea Kurtz (Mina Chaytan/ Bison), Derek Mears (Sylbert Rundine/ Dwarfstar), Dominic Burgess (Ramsey Deacon/ Kilgore), Richard Brooks (Warden Wolfe), Katee Sackhoff (Amunet Black), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Hartley Sawyer (Ralph/ Elongated Man), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin/ Killer Frost), Carlos Valdes (Cisco/ Vibe), Paul McGillion (Earl Cox), Kim Engelbrecht (Marlize DeVoe/ Mechanic), Kendrick Sampson (Dominic/ DeVoe/ the Thinker) and Neil Sandilands (Clifford DeVoe [Ralph]).

In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was an exciting episode with a simple but yet effective story. I like the idea that this episode showed the true colors of characters, it showed the true colors of Barry is still being a hero, even to criminals; we saw the true colors of Becky is ultimately being a good person, which is why she was my favorite character in the episode, and also the performance. The episode did a number of other things right such as the incredible lightning, and credit to the director, Tara Nicole Weyr for crafting together this brilliant episode. The episode did have some flaws, but ultimately a fun episode. I will give this episode of the Flash a 9 out of 10. Please comment on your thoughts and/ or opinions on the episode down below.
