SUPERGIRL "BOTH SIDES NOW" REVIEW
Season 3 Episode 13:
Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new Supergirl episode, and this episode is the last episode we will be seeing in a while, as the show is going on break. I will explain that later on. But this episode of Supergirl focuses a lot on the World Killers and how Kara might go about stopping them. Spoilers ahead for the episode if you have not seen it, let's recap.
The episode opens with Kara suited up with the DEO, and Mon going to a house where they believe a World Killer is. They learn that the woman is named, Julia. Supergirl confronts Julia and she starts to freak out with the DEO agents around. Something in Julia snaps as she uses a canary cry to attack everyone. Supergirl uses her freeze breath to save everyone, and J'onn captures Julia.
Back at the DEO, Kara and Alex interrogate Julia who says that she is now "Purity". Kara tries to get through to Julia in Purity, however, fails. Purity starts to trigger Alex in her speech and Alex storms off, and Kara decides that there is no humanity in Purity anymore. Meanwhile, Winn is taking a look at the Kryptonian crystal they got from Julia's house, and it starts glowing. After saying a type of prayer, Purity breaks free from her cell and grabs the crystal and flies away from the DEO.
Meanwhile, J'onn and Mon repair the Legion ship so they can get back to 30th century. Mon tells J'onn that he still loves Kara, and J'onn tells him that Imra deserves to know the truth. Meanwhile, Lena tells Sam to have a break from work, so Sam goes with her daughter, Ruby, ice skating. However, Sam turns into Reign and disappears. Later on, Lena goes to pick up Ruby who tells her what happened.
Winn develops some ear devices to stop Purity's canary cry from affecting the team. So Kara, Alex, Mon, and J'onn head out to find Purity. At a subway station, the four close in on Purity, however, she starts to fight all four. The fight breaks out into a populated area where Mon and J'onn save the people while Kara and Alex tag team on Purity. Kara is getting strangled by Purity and Alex takes Kara's old approach and tries to get through to Julia. Julia snaps out of being Purity and falls to the ground. Reign shows up and is about to take Supergirl, however, Julia offers herself instead.
Back at the DEO, the team recovers from their fight. In the Legion ship, Mon tells Imra that he still has feelings for Kara, which she accepts. Later on, Kara and Alex go to a bar where they have a talk about how they have moved on. The episode ends in Lena's office where Sam visits. Sam tells Lena she blacked out. Sam then turns to Reign for a second and Sam comes back knowing she just blacked out.
Overall, this episode of Supergirl was a great episode which dived deeper into the characters, their actions, and was not inconsistent on how these characters acted. I loved the contrast at the begging of the episode as to how Kara wanted to talk to Julia while Alex wanted to interrogate Purity. What I loved about that was that it matched their characters, and then towards the end of the episode, the two switched roles. Kara was done trying to find Julia, while Alex gets through to her. I creates a nice lesson showing that the two sisters learn from each other, and are inspired by one another.
The cast of the episode was really good, and I liked the writing of the characters in the episode as well, they were all consistent. Starring in the episode we had Melissa Benoist (Kara/ Supergirl), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott), David Harewood (J'onn/ Martian Manhunter), Chris Wood (Mon-El), Amy Jackson (Imra/ Saturn Girl), Krys Marshall (Julia/ Purity), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), Emma Tremblay (Ruby Airas), and Odette Annable (Samantha Arias/Reign).
Next week in the Supergirl time slot, Legends of Tomorrow will be airing. The remaining nine episodes of Legends season three will air week to week, and after those 9 weeks, on April 16th, 2018, Supergirl will return and will air the last ten episodes of season three.
In conclusion, this episode of Supergirl was a great episode with well-written characters and acting. The story of the episode was although simplistic, it was also effective in developing these character relationships. I will give this episode of Supergirl an 8.5 out of 10.
