ANTMAN AND THE WASP TRAILER BREAKDOWN

Wow, so a couple days ago I speculated that we would get the first Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer at the Superbowl, but now, six days earlier, we have got the official Ant-Man and the Wasp movie trailer which is full of some awesome scenes, and also brings along some confusion in wherein the MCU this takes place. All that and more will be explored in the breakdown, so without further ado, let's get into it.

Opening up the trailer is dialogue from Scott Lang/ Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), who asks Hope/ Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), would she have helped him in Captain America Civil War. To that Hope answers, "I guess we'll never know", adding "But if I had, you'd have never been caught." This is a shoutout to Civil War, which may be the premise of the film, I will get into that in a bit. But Hope saying what she said could mean two things, she either A, stoped Ant-Man from going into the Civil War, or B, she would've kicked team Iron Man's ass'.

We then get a shot of a sweet new Marvel Studios logo where we see the logo grow and then get the honeycomb background. I was surprised that they did not use the 10-year anniversary logo for this. The 10-year logo has the "IO" in "STUDIOS" as a 10. I guess that will play in front of the films this year.

We then hear Scott say "I do some dumb things, and the people I love the most, they pay the price." as he is getting apprehended by the FBI. Scott is most likely getting arrested for being a fugitive by fighting with Captain America in Civil War. The weird thing is that Scott is only under house arrest, and not full out getting apprehended. The Sokovia Accords may have changed a little bit in the past two years.

We see a shot of Hope and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), looking at a screen in distress. This shot is most likely them finding out that Janet, the original Wasp, is still alive. We don't see that storyline play out in the trailer, however, we do get a couple of shots that may hint at the story.

Here is a shot of Hank and Hope being surrounded by the FBI. This is most likely because of their knowledge of Scott, and also because of their enhanced human activity which was prohibited in Civil War. The real question in this shot is what is Hope and Hank doing in the wild. It is possible that they believe that Janet was here. If you have a clue, comment below.

Where hear Hope say "Thanks to you, we had to run", as we see Hank shrink down a building and wheel it as a suitcase. This is such an awesome scene, showing how Hank can just shrink anything he owns and take it around. It is absolutely hilarious seeing a building at this size. But in this scene, we see how Hope is waiting outside the van as well as Scott who seems like he just woke up and was dragged away.

Here is a quick shot of Hope suited up as the Wasp at regular size where she is looking at up. It seems like this is a third act shot where the villain of the film got a hold of the Pym particles and inlarged herself/himself.

Here is a glimpse of Laurence Fishburne's character, Goliath. Yes, Laurence Fishburne is playing Goliath who is in the film. I am so excited to see how this character plays into the film and if he will get his powers or not. I hope they do go full comic book with the character in this film, and that does not seem too farfetched.

Here is a great shot of Ant-Man riding an ant. He has used an ant as a mode of transportation in every film he has appeared in. Who knows if Scott will name an ant, like he did with Anthony in the first film.

After being chased by a yellow and white van, Hope, Scott, and Hank are driving in this van which can shrink. This is the best getaway car ever. The car has the Pym particles built in it so it can shrink or enlarge on demand. In the trailer we obviously see the car flip another car over so it will be cool to see what other ways this is used in.

It seems like we are getting another ferry save by a superhero. In Spiderman Homecoming we saw Spiderman save a ferry, and now we are seeing Giant Man save a ferry. In this scene it is most likely that Scott is searching for a person who is on the ferry, so he is trying to quickly find the person by seeing everyone at once.

Here is our first shot of the villain of the film, Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). In the comics, the ghost originated as an Iron Man villain, and not too much is known about him. In the film, it seems like the Ghost will be behind most of the events, possibly behind bringing Janet back. If I had to theorize, I would say that the Ghost is a villain of Hank Pym, maybe he knew him as Ant-Man, and after seeing Scott take the mantel, the Ghost is made and wants revenge as he believes that he should have been the Ant-Man.

Here is a quick glimpse of Luis (Michael Pena), who seems like he may be running to get someone or something to battle a threat. If I had to guess, this may be in the third act of the film, as that purple and flame car is in the background. We saw that same car next to Hope in an earlier shot of her in distress.

A small glimpse of Scott and Hope most likely sharing a kiss before a battle. This film may explore their relationship further, it was only teased at the end of the first film that they had something between them.

This scene is interesting. Here we see a small ship in what appears to be the micro-verse. The blue coloring may indicate that this is in the water. What I am theorizing is that Hank sends out this shuttle to search for Janet as he found out she was alive. We know that Janet is going to play by Michelle Pfeiffer, and it will be cool see another Captain America type situation, where someone is basically thrusted forward in time.

We then hear Scott's daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder- Fortson), say "Maybe you just need someone to have your back, like a partner." In the trailer, this is referring to Wasp, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cassie wanted to be a superhero in the film as well. But there is some more stuff I want to get to about Cassie in the last scene.

We see a shot of Wasp in action using the wings to fly around a knife being thrown. This is an incredible scene and the way the wings look awesome. Next to that scene is the Wasp using her blasters in action, which are from the comics. The effect was quick, but it looked good.

Scott is then freaking out about all the cool gadgets Wasp has and asks Hank about them, who just didn't give them to Scott. This was a funny one-liner, like Hank didn't trust Scott with blasters of wings. I would love to see at a point in a film, for Scott and Hope to switch costumes. So Scott becomes the Wasp and Hope become the Ant-Man.

The trailer ends with Hope in the van throwing a Hello Kitty Pez dispenser at a motorcyclist who was chasing them. This shot is just crazy, awesome fun, things we are used to from Ant-Man. In the film, Wasp most likely got this from Cassie. So it seems like Cassie is on the run with Scott, Hope, and Hank. So the FBI is desperately trying to get to Scott if they force his daughter to run away with him.

Overall, this trailer was absolutely phenomenal. The trailer brings the fun vibe that comes from Ant-Man, and it also does a good job of introducing the Wasp and her powers. The trailer shows awesome shots which look great on the displaying the visual effects and all the awesomeness that is happening the film. The music in the trailer sounds great, and fits with the tone. It isn't as dark an intense as what it could have been, and I appreciate that. The look and feel of this trailer are great.

Now talking about the timeline. Ant-Man and the Wasp focus on Ant-Man and company running from the FBI after his involvement in the Civil War and breaking of the Sokovia Accords. The trailer showed no mention of Infinity War obvious spoiler reasons, but this film really could take place before or after the third Avengers. I believe that this film takes place during Infinity War, where Scott cannot go to Wakanda to help the Avengers as he is on the run from the FBI, that would be an easy explainer for why he is absent in Infinity War. By the end of this film, Scott will be free, which would explain his presence in Avengers 4.

In conclusion, I love this trailer, from the music, the jokes, the cinematography, and the introduction of the Wasp, it was good all around. I have to say, Hank shrinking down the building like it's no big deal, was my absolute favorite scene of the trailer. I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on the trailer down in the comments below, let's start a conversation.
