Later on in the episode, Kara has a Christmas Eve party at her apartment where Kara tells everyone that she is thankful that she had friends to turn to after her tough year. At the party, Kara and J'onn leave to investigate a crime scene where a symbol was burnt into some grass. At the DEO Kara talks to a hologram of her mother and asks her what the symbol means, which Alura does not know of the symbol.
The next day at CatCo, James and Lena see that the symbol is burnt everywhere in National City, and Lena believes that this is Morgan Edge's doing. Lena and James go confront Morgan and discover he had nothing to do with the symbols. Meanwhile, Kara, Winn, Mon, and Imra go to the alien bar where Mon and Kara nearly walk into an awkward conversation. Kara then leaves and goes to the prison where she meets Thomas, the Rao cult leader. From him, Kara learns that there is the Kryptonian World Killer who is coming to Earth and she has created her sign of coming with the symbols, and before the World Killer starts World Killing, Kara needs to stop her.At the DEO Kara tells J'onn, Alex, and Winn about what she learned at the prison, and then Kara has a talk with Imra about how Mon tried not to give up on Kara.
Meanwhile, Sam gives her daughter, Ruby an early Christmas present, that being a Supergirl necklace. While that was going on Lena and James find another World Killer symbol on a building, they are then chased down by a man with a laser. James pulls out his Guardian shield and takes down the man. Back at CatCo, Lena tells Sam about what happened, and how she believes Morgan put the man out to kill Lena. James and Lena watch a new report on how the World Killer, reign killed a street gang. We then see Sam pull off her shirt to reveal the Reign suit. At the DEO Kara has a talk with Mon about ignoring their past. At Morgan's building, the power goes out and we hear a threat coming. Morgan hides in a lead-covered secret room where we see Reign (Sam) search for him but fail to find him.
Reign the World Killer lands on the CatCo building and creates her symbol. In the CatCo building, we see James and Lena share a moment. Back at the DEO Alex and Winn tells Kara about Reign on the building, so Kara suits up. Alex gives Kara the worst advice and tells her to be a full alien.
Kara flies over to the CatCo building and has a talk with Reign, who tells Kara she needs to be killed. Reing and Kara have a fight which falls into an office holiday party where they fight, and that fight spills onto the street where Kara fights Reign, however, Kara is loosing with her bleeding from her head. After being beaten down a couple more times, Kara manages to stop Reign, however, Kara gets knocked on top of a building by Reign's laser eyes. On the rooftop Reign holds Kara by the neck and drops her off the building, knocking Kara to the ground, bleeding and unconscious.
Back at the DEO, we see Kara being cared for by Alex. The episode ends on Christmas morning with Ruby finding her mother as Reign in their living room.
Overall this episode was an okay mid-season finale. The episode brought the spectacle in terms in terms of the story and the fight sequences, and there was alright character development, however, there were some not so great moments. I have said this before but there is some just terrible camera work in the filming of Supergirl. Like the random zooms in the middle of conversations, that is cinematography which does not look that great and bought some scenes down when used. But that does not take away from the spectacles of the episode, such as the end fight with Reign and Supergirl. That was an awesome showdown displaying the might of Reign compared to Supergirl. Some of the CG was a little off at times, but the overall scene is definitely a strong one in the series.
The characters in the episode were well developed. I enjoyed Melissa Benoist as Supergirl in the episode. She definitely delivered in the episode, and she pulled off the acting to show what state the character Kara is in at the moment with all the Mon stuff going on as well as the Reign storyline. The rest of the cast in the episode also did well, we had, Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott), Odette Annable (Samantha Arias/Reign), Emma Tremblay (Ruby Arias), David Harewood (J'onn/ Martian Manhunter), Carl Lumbly (M'yrnn J'onzz), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), Adrian Pasdar (Morgan Edge), Mechad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Chris Wood (Mon-El), and Amy Jackson (Imra/Saturn Girl).
In conclusion this episode of Supergirl was an average episode which focused on the spectacle of the Supergirl versus Reign fight, however there could have been more layers to the fight if the story was developed and involved Reign hurting one of Kara's friends in any way, that would have made for a more compelling fight where Supergirl had some sort of motivation. But regardless, I will give the episode an 8 out of 10, because it will be interesting to see where the season goes with the Legion of Superheroes and the Reign storyline. Please comment below your thoughts on the episode down below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
