RICK AND MORTY THE WHIRLY DIRLY CONSPIRACY REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 5:

On this episode of Rick and Morty, we get a Rick and Jerry adventure, and we also get a side story with Summer feeling insecure. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode starts off with Rick dragging Jerry out of his single apartment to go on an adventure. Rick tells him that Morty told him to do so out of guilt. On the adventure, they go to a fancy alien truck stop where everyone is immortal within a barrier. At the stop, Jerry is approached by an alien, Risotto, to get Rick to ride a rollercoaster, the Whirly Dirly, where there is a point where the immortality barrier ends thus a hitman can take out Rick. Jerry accepts to do so after as he still sees Rick as the point as to where he and Beth got separated.

On the Whirly Dirly Rollercoaster, Rick decides to apologize to Jerry for what has happened to him. Rick is about to be assassinated, but Jerry sacrifices himself, but immediately gets brought back to life. Rick goes to fight the hit men and kills them both, and the two breakdowns of the immortality barrier, landing in the wild. Rick and Jerry manage to get to a commercial space ship where Rick has to be injected with a serum to minimise his violent and passive-aggressive thoughts. The two get held up by Risotto and Jerry decides to stand up for the dimmed down Rick and the three fall into a weird time collapsed dream. After getting out of the weird dream, Risotto decides to let Rick and Jerry go. The dumbed down effect of Rick wears off and Rick uses his cybernetic parts to shoot Risotto.

The side plot of the story is that Summer wants to impress Ethan, so she decides to use a gadget by Rick and change her body proportions, but she accidentally transformers herself huge, and flips herself inside out. Beth and Morty try to get help from a call center, but the people taking the calls run away from the machine they were captured in. Rick and Beth manage to get Summer back to normal.

The episode ends with Rick and Jerry go home, all beaten up. They decide to leave some part out of the journey, to not tell Morty. Jerry decides to go home not letting his family see him how he is.

What worked well was seeing Jerry in a state where we haven't seen him in too much of. That is being brave. Especially around Rick, who was right about Jerry being a predator by using self-pity, which Jerry proved wrong. The weird dream that Jerry, Rick, and Risotto had some really great animation, it was really crazy with all that was going on but looked great overall.

The voice cast of the episode was great, we had Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith taking somewhat of the lead character of the episode. Justin Roiland was also amazing as both Rick and Morty, like the rest of the cast, Clancy Brown (Risotto), Spencer Grammer (Summer Smith), Sarah Chalke (Beth Smith), Daniel Benson (Ethan), Echo Kellum (Triple Trunks), and Tom Kenny (Shnoopy Blooper/Gene/ Call center alien).

About Rick and his cybernetic enhancements. I was wondering about this, but it seems like it was just something that Dan Harmon and the other writers wanted to add in just for the plot of the episode. If you wanted an explanation, Rick was probably board and gave him some robot parts, especially after his insides could have been damaged after turning himself into a pickle. And this body isn't even Rick's original body, in the first episode of season 3, Rick switched bodies with other Rick's.

In conclusion, The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy episode was an interesting one which dives deeper into the relationship of Jerry and Rick. The animation of the episode was great, and the storyline flowed relatively well. I will give the episode an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to heart your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
