THOR'S ENDGAME
Avengers Endgame bought the return of Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder, Thor, who has gone through some major character development over the course of the past two films he has been in, and Endgame continues that. So spoilers ahead for Avengers Endgame, we are going to discuss Thor's journey in Endgame and his future in the MCU.
Recap of Thor in Endgame
With Thanos tracked down, the Avengers (minus Tony) find Thanos and learn that he destroyed the Infinity Stones. Thor decides to go for the head, killing Thanos. Five years later, when the Avengers discover the possibility of time travel in the Quantum Realm, Bruce and Rocket go to New Asgard, which is based in Norway. Rocket and Bruce find Thor (thanks to Valkyrie) who has packed on dozens of pounds and has played Fornite with Korg and Miek, drinking beer. Bruce and Rocket manage to get Thor back on the team and back to the Avengers Compound. At HQ, Thor tells the team about where the Reality Stone was in 2013. The team goes into the Quantum Realm, with Thor and Rocket going to Asgard, 2013.
On Asgard, Rocket goes to inject the Aether out of a sleeping Jane Foster. Meanwhile, Thor freaks out knowing that the day that he traveled to is the day his mother, Frigga dies. Frigga finds 2023 Thor and realizes that he is from the future. Frigga gives her son a pep talk about finding his true self. Thor summons 2013 Mjolnir and heads back to 2023 with Rocket and the Aether.
At the Avengers Compound, the stones are all gathered, and Bruce uses the Stark gauntlet and snaps his fingers, bring back everyone who died from Thanos’ snap. 2014 Thanos comes to 2023 and destroys the Avengers compound. Thor duel wields up Stormbreaker and Mjolnir to fight Thanos, as Tony eventually gets the stones and snaps away Thanos and his forces. Thor returns to New Asgard and hands leadership over to Valkyrie. Thor then meets with the Guardian of the Galaxy to help them out on their next mission.
Review of Thor in Endgame
In the film, I feel like Thor devolving and becoming a slob, in the film was something that although unexpected, in hindsight, reflected the character in a neat way. The idea that Thor would act as a recluse from everyone else on Asgard is reflective on his pride which has been shattered. Thor sees himself as an unworthy king. When Thor became the king of Asgard when Odin passed away, he immediately was separated from his people (some of who were slaughtered by Hela) came back to them, evacuated them, but then ambushed by Thanos where half of them were killed, on to fail to stop Thanos again resulting in the death of another half of his people. This means that as soon as Thor has become king, the Asgardian population has decreased to a quarter of what it once was.
The 2013 time travel scene was a really neat scene for Thor. It showed how much he lost, and how much he has to avenge. I already discuss how he has let down his people but Thor has also had a rough few years. In the span of 7 years Thor thought his brother die twice, saw his mother be killed, have his father passes away, see four out of his seven best childhood friends killed, have his favorite weapon destroyed, learn that his father was somewhat of a liar, as he hid a secret sister who tried to kill him, have his only home destroyed, take a dying star to the chest, see his brother have his neck snapped, and failed to avenge him.
Thor seeing his mother was a very emotional moment because it gave Thor closure with his mother, who was killed unexpectedly. The death of Frigga was really the start of the series of unfortunate events which lead to a list of loss I just listed.
In the final battle of the film, Thor duel wielding Mjolnir and Stormbreaker was awesome, and something that I never thought would be a possibility. Although Thor packed on a few pounds, he still had an insane power level in the sequence and was a character that I did like seeing fight Thanos past his 'prime' one on one.
Future of Thor
So I guess that Thor is now a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. A lot of people have been calling the team ‘Asgardians of the Galaxy’. That was actually a comic title which came out last year.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 will be the next time that we will most likely see Thor back on screen. I am sure that there will be a Thor 4 later down the line.
In Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, it will be so awesome to see Thor not only interact with the guardians more, however, also interact with Adam Warlock who will be in that film. I did a breakdown of what might be in Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3 based off what happened in Endgame.
After Guardians vol. 3, the films that I see Thor showing up in later in the future is Thor 4, and Avengers 5, and the other Avengers sequels.
In Thor 4, I would imagine that Thor returns to new Asgard and go on an adventure with Valkyrie, I would also imagine that Beta Ray Bill would be involved in that film one way or another, considering that he has been snubbed from several films in the past.
Of course, no matter the threat, Thor would always be invited to the Avengers team just because of his high power level. So we could see Thor fighting Skrulls, Dormammu, Galactus, whoever is the villain of the next Avenger sequels.
In conclusion, Chris Hemsworth did an amazing job in bringing to life Thor in this film. I liked where the character went and the unpredictable, yet organic way we saw the character in 2023 in the film, and him getting closure with Frigga was a great scene. I am also excited for the future of Thor in the MCU, with him joining the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as hopefully getting a future installment of his solo franchise.
