THE FLASH "GOLDFACE" REVIEW

Season 5 Episode 13:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of the Flash, directed by Alexandra La Roche. In this episode we see several plot lines, such as Barry and Ralph going on an adventure, and Nora trying to throw off Sherloque Wells off investigating her. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

With Sherloque investigating her, Nora goes to 2049 to get advice from Eobard Thawn who tells her to set Sherloque up with a love interest, which she does and Sherloque tries to pick up an Earth-One version of his ex-wife which he scared off.

Meanwhile, the team finds out in order to use the meta-human cure on Cicada, the team needs to hold down Cicada for one minute. In order to do that, the team needs a device to get him down, so Barry and Ralph go undercover in the criminal underworld in Central City to get said device- where Barry and Ralph have meta-gene dampening bracelet on. In an underground meta tech black market, Barry finds some cop killing guns which he wants to buy the whole stock of (to get off the street). Ralph and Barry meet the guy running the black market, "Goldface", who offers a deal to Ralph and Barry, that they will get the device if they help steal an organ machine that is going to a hospital. Barry creates a fake persona as the "Chemist".

Iris is starting up her news blog, as she starts to pursue Cicada and bring the public to his attention. Iris interviews someone who links Cicada to being related to someone named "Bobby Burns".  Iris breaks into Cicada's house where she has to sneak out, leaving her bag when Orlin comes home. On her way out of the door, Iris makes a noise and plays it off as the "door was open" and asks to interview Burns, and Cicada says that he is Burns. After the interview, Iris picks up her bag, and Cicada catches her. Using some pepper spray, knocking over the dollhouse, and stabbing Cicada, Iris manages to get away.

At the heist, Ralph locks Barry in a van, as he tries to get to the organ machine before anyone else. Ralph decides that people need the machine more than they need the device to stop Cicada. "The ends don't justify the meat." Ralph knocks out one of the other mercenaries and is taken outside to be killed, alongside Barry. But Barry escaped the van and helps Ralph escape. Using some stun rifles, Barry and Ralph stop the rest of the mercenaries and stop the machine from being stolen. Goldface shows up to fight Ralph and Barry, who fight him and his gold chain and gold plated skeleton and then Barry manages to get Goldface electrocuted.

Back at STAR Labs, Ralph and Barry didn't get the device, however, they did go with Killer Frost to Cicada's house to meet Iris where Cicada has disappeared. Back in the future, Nora tells Eobard that Sherloque is distracted by love, and she needs help in stopping Cicada.

Overall, this episode of the Flash was great in the way that it explored three separate and distinct plots which all did maintain a sense of entertainment. The Nora and Sherlque plot of the episode was interesting. I did like their concept, however, it did draw away from the suspense of the other two plots which was a shame. I am excited to see what happens with the Nora plot in the future, especially with her getting help from Eobard to stop Cicada.

The Iris plot was interesting and did create for some great suspense in the episode. There was a sense of slight danger for the character, and it was great that they did use some slight horror elements in these scenes to illustrate the dangers that Iris is in. I did like how the plot eventually played out. I did like the conflict created at the end fight there because Iris did hold her own in a believable and exciting way. I also did like how Cicada did have a reason to want to hurt Iris, especially at the end there, by destroying the dollhouse.

Barry and Ralph's plot was interesting and was made that way with their powers being immediately taken away. That way the characters did feel like they were in danger, and they could face some serious harm, because, without their powers, Ralph and Barry aren't the best in fighting. The plot also posed the question of "Does the ends justify the meat?' Which was an interesting way to present the character growth of Ralph and Barry, and how they will always end up being heroes, and they won't trade lives.

The character of Goldface was an exciting villain. I did like the concept that he started the meta-tech black market, it did explore how far the effects of the team saving everyone has gone. I also did like the end fight with the character, because of his unique power set in the show. It was an interesting reveal. I do have to admit, I did love how the gold poured from Goldface's body when he was being fried.

The gunfight at the end of the episode was also an interesting scene and was really fun to watch,. Seeing Barry and Ralph having fun without their powers, and still saving the day showed their character growth as being heroes in and out of their costumes. I also did like the lighting in this scene as well, it complemented the action neatly.

The cast of the episode was great. I do have to say that I enjoyed Grant Gustin and Hartley Sawyer's performances together, it held a strong through-line in the episode, and I also enjoyed how Damion Poitier was in that plotline, also aiding to that development while standing on his own as an awesome character. Starring in the episode we had Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ the Flash), Hartley Sawyer (Ralph Dibny/ Elongated Man), Damion Poitier (Goldface), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost), Jessica Parker Kennedy (Nora West-Allen/ XS), Tom Cavanagh (Sherloque Wells/ Eobard Thawne), Candice Patton (Iris West), and Chris Kelin (Orlin Dwyer/ Cicada).

In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was an interesting episode which had three interesting plots which did build some great suspense and entertainment and showed how these characters have grown. I will give this episode an 8 out of 10.
