ARROW "ELSEWORLDS, PART 2" REVIEW
Season 7 Episode 9:
We are back for round two of the Elseworlds crossover, this time with the Arrow episode, directed by James Bamford. In this episode, we see the introduction of Gotham city in the Arrowverse, as well as Batwoman, and her ties to the urban legend of the "Batman". I will also be calling the character's by their real name, and not their body switch. So spoilers ahead for this episode lets recap.
Red skies and yellow lightning fall over Star City where Diggle is taking down Jericho, who is in his father's, Deathstroke's costume. The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl come and save Diggle and take down Jericho. At Argus, Felicity is called in and Oliver tells Barry to not tell her about the body switch. Barry, Oliver, and Kara go to Gotham city to find Dr. Deegan, where they encounter Kate Kane, who has taken over her cousin, Bruce Wayne's company, Wayne Enterprise. The three ask Kane if she knows Deegan, and she tells them that he works at Arkham Asylum.
At the Argus facility, Caitlin and Cisco show up where they accidentally tell Felicity about the body swap. Caitlin, Felicity, Curtis, and Diggle create a magnet to pull whatever is trying to come into Earth-1. A wormhole opens up and the Flash from Earth-90 tells the team about the book from Monitor. At Arkham Asylum, Caitlin, Cisco, and Diggle meet up with Barry Oliver and Kara, where they go into the Asylum to find Deegan and the book. Meanwhile, Kate Kane suits up as Batwoman. Oliver and Diggle find Deegan however he runs away, unlocking all the prisoners, but Kara manages to get the book from him. Caitlin finds Nora Fries wanting to be frozen, who attacks Caitlin as Killer Frost. Barry and Oliver try to stop Fries, however, some chemicals spill and Barry hallucinates Malcolm Merlyn and Oliver hallucinates Reverse Flash, as they, in reality, fight each other. Batwoman comes in and knocks down Barry and Oliver. Outside, Batwoman takes down some inmates and everyone assembles outside. Kara has a talk with Kate as they talk about their cousins an being a hero.
Back at Argus, Oliver has a talk with Felicity, while Cisco, Caitlin, and Curtis study the book. Out of a wormhole Earth-90 Barry Allen, the Flash shows up and tells everyone about the Monitor and how he rewrote reality. The monitor appears on the streets, so Kara, Oliver, Earth-90 Barry, and Barry confront the Monitor. The Monitor tells the heroes that he is testing their Earth of the collision of realities which is going to come from a great threat. The Monitor teleports 90's Barry away, takes the book and goes back to Deegan, telling him to rewrite reality more, which he does.
Barry and Oliver find themselves on a street, in leather, without their powers. They find out that they are criminals named the "Trigger Twins". Police Officers Ricardo Diaz, Jericho, and Merlyn show up and Barry and Oliver escape them, however, Black suit Superman shows up and stops them.
Overall, this episode was a great additional part of the crossover. This did still feel a little more like an Arrow episode, however, not as much as yesterdays episode felt like a Flash episode. There were a few characters from Arrow who were absent such as Black Canary, Black Siren, and Rene, but I was fine with that as we got characters from the Flash, such as Cisco and Caitlin, who were awesome to see. The character of Batwoman was great. I do feel like she got a bit of the short end of the stick, in terms of the character of Kate Kane and her role in the crossover. However, those action scenes with the character were amazing to see and had some great shots and sequences which were gritty and felt sort of real world.
The way that the episode was filmed was great, it felt a little larger than life when compared to a regular Arrow episode, however, it didn't feel as grand as yesterdays episode. However, the use of lighting and coloring was great, it brought a grittier, darker tone to the episode which was great considering that the characters went to Gotham City. Talking about GC, the city was kind of exciting to see on screen, it did feel like a regular city, but it has all gone to crap. That was seen in a few ways from the covered up Bat signal, the Wayne building in a bad shape, and the lack of law enforcement.
In terms of the Batman of the episode, I felt like it was handled well. The episode displayed Batman as a myth and had Bruce Wayne as a public figure. I do like how the character has gone missing, for the past three years. It creates a mystery for the character and although it is weird that the character is absent at this time, it doesn't feel too out of character as Batman does seem like someone who would go off the grid, knowing that there is someone else defending Gotham.
The 90's Barry Allen in the episode was awesome. I do like how Barry thought he was his dad for a second. That was a small and great character moment for Barry. But the 90's Flash was so awesome to see on screen, he added additional context to the plot and its great to have the show being added into the arrowverse multiverse. The character was underutilized in this episode, however, I hope that he is used in the next episode, as well as Batwoman.
I do like the shoutout that 90's Barry gave to Diggle about him on Earth-90 being the Green Lantern, a callback to theories about Diggle being a Lantern back in 2013.
Ruby Rose was great as Batwoman. I do feel like she needed a little more time to slip into being the Batwoman a little more, but there was a whole lot teased for her character and the city of Gotham for her own show.
The rest of the cast was great in the episode, I do have to say that I did love Killer Frost in the episode. But starring in the episode was Stephen Amell (Oliver as Barry Allen/ The Flash), Grant Gustin (Barry as Oliver Queen/ Green Arrow), Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers/ Supergirl), Ruby Rose (Kate Kane/ Batwoman), David Ramsey (John Diggle/ Spartan), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon/ Vibe), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost), Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), Echo Kellum (Curtis Holt/ Mr. Teriffic), John Wesley Shipp (Barry Allen/ The Flash [Earth-90]), Lim Hall (Kane Wolfman/ Jericho), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn/ Dark Archer), Tom Cavanagh (Eobard Thawne/ Reverse Flash), Kirk Acevedo (Ricardo Diaz), Cassandra Jean Amell (Nora Fries), Bob Frazer (Roger Hayden/ Psycho-Pirate), Jeremy Davies (Dr. John Deegan), LaMonica Garrett (Monitor), and Tyler Hoechlin (Clark Kent/ Superman).
Overall, this episode was a great episode of Arrow, and a great step in the story of the crossover. This episode leaned heavy in towards the characters and the struggles they go through. The introduction of Batwoman was great, and it was awesome to see 90's tv Flash in this episode, although both of their screen times were short-lived. I will give this episode an 8.5 out of 10.
