SUPERGIRL "BATTLES LOST AND WON" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 23:

Hey everyone, we are back after a hiatus from Supergirl season 3 with the season finale where we see Kara and the others attempt to defeat the World Killer, Reign in a story directed by Jesse Warn. Spoilers ahead for this episode of Supergirl lets recap.

With Reign going into the center of the Earth, Kara, Alura, Mon, and the DEO are aided by the Legion of Heroes to save everyone in national City whilst Superman is saving everyone else around the world from the natural disaster occurrences. J'onn goes with his father, M'yrnn to transfer the last memories. M'yrnn uses his last energy to shapeshift into the Earth stopping Reign from making it to the core of the Earth, killing M'yrnn in the process.

With the disasters stopped, everyone meets back at the DEO. Lena runs some more test on Sam to find out that there are still Kryptonian cells within her and that Sam is dying. Sam goes into the Worldkiller dreamscape where she finds her other who gives her water from the fountain of strength which Alura said to do. Meanwhile, Brainiac-5 speak to Mon and Wynn and he tells them that his distant relative (Brainiac) is a threat and he needs Mon and Winn to stop him as members of the Legion.

Kara, Mon, Alura, and J'onn go to confront Selena, Reign and the other Kryptonians as they fight. At the DEO, Sam wakes up and she has some Kryptonian powers so she races to help Kara and the others. Sam kills Reign as Reign is sucked into the WorldKiller dreamscape, however she goes crazy and uses her laser eyes to kill Mon. Using the Legion ring, Kara flies into space and travels back in time. In the cave, Kara stops Sam from killing Reign, instead, they use the special rock to go into the World Killer dream world. In there, Sam beats up Reign and gives Reign water from the fountain of death, killing Reign in the dreamscape.

At the DEO, Mon tells Kara that he has to go back to the future as he gives Kara a Legion ring. Before she can resign, J'onn promotes Alex to director of the DEO while he steps down. Winn says goodbye to James, Kara, and everyone else as he goes to the future with Mon to join the Legion, while Brainy stays behind at the DEO, while Kara farewells her mother. While having a drink with Lena, James gets a call where he says "I am the Guardian". At home Kara and Alex and adjusting to the large change as they see Jame's identity reveal on the news. The episode ends with Lena and Eve doing tests as they have a sample of the rock which glows. We flashback to 48 hours earlier when Kara time traveled and we see a Kara in a blanket stumble upon a base in Siberia.

Overall, this episode of Supergirl was an average way to end the episode. The way that the story was going and how it was developed through eh acing was great, however, the episode fell flat in a few areas where the episode could have and should have shinned, as they were important scenes, so the episode was brought down a little by that. The scene I am talking about in particular was the first time that Reign went down and Mon was killed. The only emotion I saw was through the actions of Melissa on screen. A small scene of Kara kneeling next to Mon's body seeing him dead a little more and that impact on her would have been better, however it was completely dismissed which takes away from the time travel aspect of the episode which could have been better if we saw a better reason for Kara to do so rather than to just hear it.

The takedown of Reign in the dream world was cleverly done. I enjoyed how we saw Sam fight Reing as we saw her finally get her revenge. That was a satisfactory ending to the story of Sam in the episode.

One of the biggest plot points in the episode was was Brainy teased. The distant relative that Brainy talked about was Brainiac, the shrinking city Superman villain who was on Krypton. With Brainiac still alive due to him not being killed, all A.I's like Brainy are liable to get killed, so people like Mon and Winn need to stop Brainiac. This was a brilliant way to end off part of the character's arcs. If I had to guess, we will not see anything from the future specifically, however, it is possible that we see the team fight Brainiac in the present with Winn and Mon coming back. However, that is a 'What If" and it is possible that Mon and Winn do not come back, and if that's the case, this was a great ending.

There were a few great moments at the end of the episode:

  • Kara getting the Legion ring
  • Alex becoming the director of the DEO
  • J'onn retiring

But now, the ending. To start off, I am very confused as to how this exactly happened, however, I know what is going to happen. So we see a doppelganger of Kara enter Siberia. This is a clear adaptation of the Superman Red Son story, which in this case would be the "Red Daughter". That story was an "Else world" story, something not in any main continuity. In that story, it focused on the what if Superman, Kal-El, landed in the Soviet Union in the 1950's, which eventually leads to a Soviet Superman controlled by the government and the Cold War turning from Nuclear weapons war to a Meta-Human war.

In the show this Kara, the Red Daughter will be an older version of Kara who has little to no memories and will be taken in by the Siberians and most likely become one of their main weapons. One of the ideas behind the comics was that it was set in the Cold War, that kind of tension between the US and Russian these days does not exist, and I am sure on Earth-38 it does not exist from what we have seen. I am speculating that this Kara found herself in a detached, illegal branch of the government. That way the show ould adapt a frightful version of the story and not create any political tension in the show or possibly real life.

But that last scene did excite me because we could see a Meta-Human war not necessarily between countries, however between say the illegal Siberian branch and the DEO. Again I have no idea how a separate doppelganger was created, but I know where this is heading and I am excited.

Melissa Benoist was amazing in the episode was Kara Danvers/ Supergirl. The performance from Benoist was great and it displayed the more human side of the character which makes her choice on Earth more compelling. The editing and script writing of the episode did fail the arch of the character in the episode a little bit.

Carl Lumbly was spectacular in the episode was M'yrnn. I absolutely loved the character in the show, he became one of my favorite characters, but the way that he went out was interesting, a little confusing, however, the last scene he had with J'onn was brilliant and showed the great acting of Lumbly.

Erica Durance as Alura Zor El was great. I really wish she got some more screen time, however, the time that she did have was great, and the relationship which she developed through her acting with Kara was compelling and was memorable, and created for great scenes in the episode.

The cast of the episode was great. Everyone did a great job in portraying their character's, however, it was some of the editing and script that degraded the character's arch in the episode. Starring in the episode we had Melissa Benoist (Kara Zor El/ Supergirl), Odette Annable (Samantha Arias/ Reign), Erica Durance (Alura Zor El), Chris Wood (Mon-El), David Harewood (J'onn J'onzz/ Martian Manhunter), Carl Lumbly (M'yrnn J'onzz), Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Emma Tremblay (Ruby Arias), Betty Buckley (Patrica Arias), Jesse Rath (Brainiac-5), Amy Jackson (Imra/ Saturn Girl), Anjali Jay (Selena), Chad Lowe (Thomas Coville), Mechad Brooks (James Olsen/ the Guardian), and Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor).

In conclusion, this episode of Supergirl was something that I was excited about and it had some exciting plot elements to it, however with the editing, the script, and some odd cinematography and CG, the episode lost a lot of not only visual flair, however, story and emotional flare which could have made this episode much more memorable than what it is. However, this episode was redeemed through the acting, and the final plot threads teased which excite me. I will give this episode a 7 out of 10.
