RICK AND MORTY 'THE ABC'S OF BETH' REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 9:

A new episode of Rick and Morty is out and this time the story focuses on Beth and how she acts as a person. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

In the episode, we hear that a man is going to be executed as he is convicted of eating his son, Tommy, who was friends with Beth. Beth says that she last saw Tommy in her land Rick built for her, Froopy land. Rick sends Morty and Beth to Jerry's and Rick talks to Beth about Froopy land. Rick gets a piece of chalk and takes Beth back to Froopy land.

In Froopy Land we discover that Beth was placed here as an alternative daycare for her. In the land there is basically no harm, however, a pterodactyl type animal comes and takes Rick away trying to eat it. Rick gets his arm chopped off and replaces with a cybernetic part. Getting samples of the bird, Rick discovers that it has some human DNA. Beth and Rick realize that Tommy was left in here. The two realize that Tommy breeds with the creatures in the Froopy land and ate the offspring in a "weird cannibalistic cycle".

Rick and Beth get captured by the beings of Froopy land where the two are brought to the master, Tommy. Tommy puts on a stage play about how he was stuck in the land due to Beth; and how he reproduced. Rick certifies it "fresh", and the two go home.

Rick and Beth go home. Rick says that Beth was a weird kid that almost was like Rick and that he believes that Beth left Tommy in Froopy land. Rick goes and gets a box full of stuff Beth asked for Rick to make for here, which included a bunch of weird sh*t.Rick admits that he created Froopy land to keep everyone else safe. To stop Beth from creating havoc as a child in the neighborhood; and also that Rick would not have to create a clone for everyone Beth messed up. However, Beth is determined to go save Tommy.

In Froopy land, Beth is geared up with all the weird stuff Rick made for her. Beth reveals to Tommy that she is Beth and she gets attacked by everyone and starts to attack back knowing she is like her father. Coming back home cover in blood, Beth asks Rick about the clones. We then see Rick create a clone of Tommy with all the memories before he went missing. Beth then gives Tommy to his mother and Tommy and his mother goes to the prison and stops that father from getting executed.

Meanwhile, Summer and Morty arrive at Jerry's apartment where they discover that Jerry is dating an alien, Ciara; who wants to be in a soul bond with Jerry. Morty warns Jerry about the implications that this could have, however, he ignores. One day Jerry and Ciara take the kids and go hunting, however, the Smiths are tired. Jerry drops the kids back home and they tell Jerry that he needs to break up with Ciara as a soul bond is serious. And when the two said that he needed to move on they meant for him not to be pathetic and not find a new partner.

Back home, Rick tells Beth that she is worse than evil. She is smart. She is smart that she knows the universe doesn't care. Rick says that the universe is like an animal, it has people in it just to consume them, so it dwells on the small things that they care about. Beth asks Rick "what should I do", which Rick tells her to just run away, leave, like he did. Beth says that she just can't leave everything. Rick says that he could make a clone of her with her personalities and memory which can replace Beth, and if Beth wants to come back, the clone can go away. Beth asks Rick why he would do something like this. Rick says that some things are so small that maybe she matters to him, or maybe he loves her, or maybe it has something to do with her mother. Beth looks at the photos of the family on the fridge and says "I know what I want to do."

The next day Jerry gets Morty out of school, as Ciara is hunting down both Morty and Summer. This is because Jerry said that the kids wanted Jerry to break up with Ciara. Running away, the smiths manage to get themselves into a cave. Ciara corners them, however, Ciara has a partner who discovers that she was in his territory of hunting. The Smiths manage to run away with this "ex-machina".

Summer and Morty go back home where Beth is about to get Dinner. Rick goes and gets pizza and the Smith family is all the same.

The post-credit scene of the episode is of Jerry's answer machine at his house where Ciara's ex-partner is was killed by Rick who made out with Ciara.

What I enjoyed about the episode was the arch between Rick and Beth. We learned more about Beth as a character and her personality as a child and know. The show is pushing to make more of a connection between Rick and Beth and show that she is truly his child and that she may be one of the only few people that he genuinely cares about. Rick also mentioned that he cares about Beth's mother, so that means that the two may not have gotten a separation, but something happened to her like she was killed from every multiverse.

Froopy land in the episode was an interesting setting. The adventure aesthetic of the place really wanted me to explore that area, but seeing the inhabitants of the area, maybe not.

Looking back on the end scene of Beth in the episode, I think that she ran away. There is not too much she has to stay back for, and at the end, she seemed a little overly nice. I do not know what Beth is doing in a hiatus, but it will be interesting to see what is going on with this arch, going into future seasons.

The voice cast in the episode was great. We had Sarah Chalke taking on the main role of Beth in the episode. Everyone else in the episode was great, Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty), Spencer Grammer (Summer Smith), Chris Parnell (Jerry Smith), Thomas Middleditch, John DiMaggio, Alex Jayne Go, Jennifer Hale, Brandon Johnson, Tom Kenny, Maurice La Marche, Asy Saavedra, Chloe Saavedra, and Dan Harmon.

I enjoyed the episode, it was interesting diving into the character of Beth more, learning about her past and how Rick feels about her. I will give the episode an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. Next week is the season finale for season 3, so not a whole longer, sadly. But as always thanks for reading, take care.
