LEGENDS OF TOMORROW "THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE CUDDLY" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 18:

Hey everyone, it is time for the season three finale of Legends of Tomorrow directed by Dermott Downs, we see multiple characters from throughout the season and series, return, all at once to help in the fight against Mallus as we see the season come to a close while season four is teased at the end. All of this will be explained in this recap and review. But first, spoilers ahead, let's do a recap.

With Mallus broken free and taken his true form, the Legends try to use their Totem abilities to fight Mallus, however loose. Rip steals the time drive from the Waverider as the Legends board the Waverider. Zari grabs the time drive from the jump ship to power the entire Waverider. Saying a final goodbye on a hologram to the Legends, Rip activates the time drive to blow-up, consuming both himself and injuring Mallus, as the Legends get away.
Sad with the death of Rip, Sara tells Gideon to take the Waverider to Salvation, in 1874, time hidden time, where they can store the totems before they find new Totem bearers. Meanwhile, Ray takes Damien as they take off on the jump ship. In the Wild West, Sara, Mick, Zari, and Wally meet Jonah Hex. In the small town, Sara, Jonah, and the others are confronted by Mallus controlled Blackbear, Julius Caesar, and Freydis Eriksdottir. The three demand for Sara to bring out all six Totems by high noon tomorrow.

One the Waverider, Nate joins Amaya in a journey to the ancestral plane, where Nate and Amaya see the original Totem bearers come together to stop Mallus. Meanwhile, Jonah walks in on Zari sending out a signal to potential totem bearers. In a meeting, Nate tells the team that Ray behind the Water Totem, but instead took Damien to the jump ship. Amaya tells the team the plan to stop Mallus, and that is to use the Totems together.
Outside, Amaya (Spirit Totem), Zari (Air Totem), Mick (Fire Totem), Nate (Earth Totem), Wally (Water Totem), and Sara (Death Totem), use their totems to try to create a trap for Mallus, for practice. With the members not concentrating, they create a Cronenberg monster. Mick kills the creation with his heat gun. Using her portal watch, Ava arrives with some help in the form of new timeline Kuassa, Amazonian trained Helen of Troy, and Jax.
Using the jump ship, Ray and Damien go to Zambasei 1992, where they just were, in hopes to save Nora and prevent Mallus from taking over. Finding an unstable Nora, Damien and Ray knock out Nora. Using the nano-gun, Damien shoots Nora. In his arms, Nora and Damien exchange a few last words, as Mallus transfers from Nora to Damien, who forms into the true form of Mallus. Ray takes Nora back to the jump ship.

In the Wild West, the team talks to their allies that they meet throughout the season. Kuassa in the present day is a version on Vixen, sharing the Totem with her sister. When she was dropped off in Themyscira, Helen was trained to fight like an Amazonian warrior, while we discover that the Jax that Ava picked up is from five years in the future (2023), where he is a father. Walking into the bar, Ray tells everyone that he saved Nora, however, Damien dies as a good man, becoming the vessel for Mallus.
With all the heroes gather, as captain, Sara gives her speech. Sara tells the team that they need to prove that Rip dies in vain and that today is the day that they earn the title "Legends". Confronting Blackbear, Caesar, and Eriksdottir, and their armies, Sara presents them the six totems. Ava grabs her on a horse and the two run away, with the armies following them. Confronted by the heroes, the Legends fight their way through the armies by using their swords, their magic, their speed, and their gunslinging. The Legends with the totems go back to the bar, going to create "purist" of the things to stop Mallus. Speaking of the literal devil, Mallus shows up as the other heroes try to fend him off.

Created by the Legend Totem bearers is a giant Beebo, controlled by the six Legends. With the Legends controlling Bebbo, they get into a fight against Mallus, on a field. With kicks and punches are thrown by the two. Beboo manages to get the upper hand as it grabs Mallus and slams it and itself into the ground, destroy them both, leaving behind a crater and the Legends.
Back in the town, the Water, Fire, Earth, and Death Totem are handed back to Kuassa who goes back to present day. The Time Bureau comes to take away the non-Mallus controlled pirates, Vikings, and Romans back to their respective times, while the memories of this fiasco are wiped from the Western locals. Ava and Sara part ways for now, while the Legends say bye to Jax. Ray secretly gives an apprehended Nora, Damien's time stone. Jonah gives his hat to Zari, while Amaya tells Sara and Zari that it is time for her to leave.

In Zambesi, the 1940's, Nate says his farewells to Amaya. Refusing to have her memories of Nate erased, Amaya chooses to keep them. The two have a final kiss as Nate walks back onto the jump ship leaving Amaya to fulfill her destiny.
After defeating Mallus, the Legends finally have their vacation on Aruba, in 2018. With the six Legends lying down, Sara mentions she is about to meet up with Ava. However dressed as Constantine, Gary shows up. Constantine then shows up with the head of a demon dragon, a monster that Constantine killed after it was released from the same prison that Mallus was released from.

Overall, this episode was a fitting way to end the season. To start off, the setting of the Wild West was perfect. The salvation with Jonah Hex is something that is visited annually by the Legends, so it was a great way to fit in this episode as well as have it be the perfect place for the finale, creating a familiar place, that was open, the Wild West was the best setting for the finale. The episode worked well in closing the story of Mallus, however, it did feel a little weird in the way some characters were used, such as Wally using the Water Totem, something that the character had no connection with. But in the end it all worked and it introduced the cuddly part into the episode title, that being Beebo. The use of Beebo was so absurd that it worked. The Furby like toy was a pivotal part in the mid-season finale so it would make sense that it returns in the finale. I do like the way that it looked. The CG on Beebo looked pretty good which was surprising.

In having a lighter tone in the episode, it was not out of place having the Beebo twist at the end there. It was crazy and radically different from other villain takedowns, that this stood out. In the episode, we saw the introduction and departure of a few characters. Let's talk about the death's first. Rip Hunter died. That was a little unexpected and came out of nowhere. However it did work in the episode, and it helped as a driving point in the episode. It is possible that the character is brought back in the future, but do not expect him to be in any of the crossover's, that is basically a running gag.
The other death in the episode was Damien Darhk. I was kind of expecting the death of Damien in the episode, however not in the way it was done. In a touching and fitting way, the episode humanized the characters of Damien and Nora in a remarkable way, creating sympathy for these characters. The end there with Nora and Ray was to intend that Nora would escape and go back to her time, that being in the 2030's. The ending for the character did leave it open for her to return.

The introduction of the character's in this episode, we had Jax back. I did like the five-year twist, it created a neat epilogue to the character, one of which was hinted at but not delivered in the midseason finale. Helen of Troy returned, and she was awesome. I liked the Amazonian style to the character, it created an awesome addition to the episode, and I wish we got a little more screen time of her with the Legends, as she is the closest we may ever get to seeing an Amazonian in the DCTV universe. Kuassa was the biggest twist in the episode. I liked the idea of the changed timeline that was done. It made a more hopeful end to the character, and even though it retconned the Vixen animated series, the ending to the character was fulfilling, and it has Amaya a reason to fulfill her destiny.

With the wider range of the character's in this episode I thought we would see a wider range in the rooster of the season four team. But first, Amaya leaving. It was a fitting end to the character, especially as this season heavily involved Amaya. With creating a family story with Amaya and Kuassa, we saw the reasons for her going back to Zambesi. The character has been a pivotal and strong part of the show, being in both the crossovers, this Vixen was one of the coolest characters in my personal opinion in the DCTV universe. The end of the character was fitting and left her a reason to fulfill her destiny. However, Maisie Richardson-Sellers will be back next season so we will see how that plays out.

The end of the episode was awesome, I have to say it was my favorite scene. First of all, we got the Aruba pay off which was great to see. With Constantine showing up we got to tease for Amaya's fill in, that being Constantine, who is confirmed to be a season four regular. With John on the Waverider next season, we don't have a major shift in the lineup, however like Amaya was this season, John will be pivotal to the plot of next season which will deal with the magic and monsters that escaped the prison that Mallus was from. That is the apparent problem, however, most likely something else will emerge for the team to fight.

The episode presented so many great performances. I do have to say that Maisie Richardson-Sellers was remarkable in the episode. In creating a performance that made a neat circle to the character's initial story was brilliant, and the emotion created in that scene was what bought it to life.
Arthur Darville was excellent as Rip Hunter in the episode. With the death of the character, it was an exhilarating exit which was sold by the performance of the character.
Neal McDonough was amazing in the episode. Playing one of the most feared villains in the Arrowverse, the performance from McDonough made a sympathetic end to the character and a neat way for the character to exit the universe.
Johnathon Schaech was great to see back as Jonah Hex. I liked the character's interactions with the team. The episode integrated the character more with the Legends, however still made him feel distinct, which was brilliant to see.

The rest of the cast was great in the episode, I was glad that so many characters came back, it made for one memorable episode. Starring in the episode we had  Caity Lotz (Sara/ White Canary),  Tala Ashe (Zari Tomaz), Nick Zano (Nate/ Steel), Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally/ Kid Flash), Dominic Purcell (Mick/ Heatwave), Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe), Brandon Routh (Ray/ the Atom), Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk), Franz Drameh (Jax Jackson), Tracy Ifeachor (Kuassa), Bar Paly (Helen of Troy), Amy Louise Pemberton (Gideon), Jonathan Cake (Blackbeard), Katia Winter (Freydis Eriksdottir), Simon Merrells (Julius Caesar), John Nobel (Mallus [voice]), Ben Diskin (Beebo [voice]), Adam Tsekham (Gary Green), Matt Ryan (John Constatine).

In conclusion, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was a fulfilling end to the season in the way that the threat of Mallus was ended. In creating exciting epilogues for different character's in the season, this episode was not only a neat bow tie on the present that is season three, however, the episode was a present itself, with brilliant film techniques of camera angles, lighting, and not so shabby CG, and great performances, this Beebo sized episode is one to remember, especially with that ending. I will give this episode a 9 out of 10. What did you think of the episode? let me know your favorite characters and scenes from this episode.
