LEGENDS OF TOMORROW " I, AVA" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 16:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, directed by Dean Choe. In the episode, we discover the mysteries that surround the Time Bureau agent, Ava Sharpe, as we also get a closer look at the story with the Totems develop regarding Kuassa and her family. So spoilers ahead for the episode of Legends of Tomorrow, let's recap and then review.

The episode opens up with Sara leaving the ship as she wants time alone, so Sara elects Amaya to be in captain while she's away. As captain, Amaya tells Zari to train Mick with the Fire Totem. Amaya see's that Mari McCabe, her granddaughter in 2018, is out being Vixen without the Totem, so she sends out Nate and Wally to talk to Mari. In Detroit, 2018, Wally and Nate talk to Chuck McCabe, Mari's foster father, as they talk to him about talking Mari out of being a vigilante. Nate sees's Kuassa in the hospital, and he walks over to her to confront her. Wally sees Kuasa and attempts to capture her, however, she slips through his fingers. Nate and Wally talk to Kuassa who tells the two Legends that she wants to save her sister [Mari] by taking down the Darhk's.

Before Sara leaves ship, Ray talks to Sara, and then Agent Gary teleports in and tells the two that Ava has been missing for a couple days. Gary, Sara, and Ray go to the Time Burea headquarters where they look through Ava's stuff. The three go to Fresno, California, to asks Ava's parents about where she has been. After nearly killing them, the three find out that the couple they were talking to were not Ava's parents, however, hired actors to pose as Ava's parents. Back at the Time Bureau HQ, Sara, Ray, and Gary find Ava, who exchanges a few bitter words with Sara, who manages to take Ava's time teleporting watching. Ray opens up the watch's location history on a computer and finds Vancouver 2213 to be classified. The three theories that Ava might be an anachronism from 2213, so they take the mother ship which has no restriction and they travel to 2213. In the future, the three find the future to have more than one Ava Sharpe, as there is a cloning factory for the "perfect woman", Ava.

Meanwhile, Zari teaches Mick to use the Fire Totem, however, the two get into a little fight. Kuassa takes Nate and Wally to her hideout where she tells them that if Wally keeps Amaya occupied on board the Waverider, Kuassa can offer Nate to the Darhk's in return for the animal totem, but, Kuassa will free Nate and not give him to the Darhk's. Wally goes to the Waverider, as the plan develops with the Darhk's showing up. Kuassa receives her family's totem, as she does not let Nate escape. Kuassa leaves as Damien tortures Nate. With Mallus/Nora (let's call her "Norulls") out of the room, Damien tells Nate that he doesn't like working for Mallus, and he can not see his daughter anymore. Damien does some more confessing to Nate and tells him that the fun in torturing is done, so Damien tells Nate to fake being tortured. On the Waverider, Kusssa shows up. Wally asks where Nate is and she tells him that she gave him to the Darhk's. Amaya and Kuassa have an argument about being selfish.

In 2213, Gary, Sara, and Ray go into the clone factory where they see an army of Ava clones. Regular Ava teleports in and sees the clone of herself and faints. Waking her up, Gary and Sara tell Ava the truth, that she is a clone. Sara tells Ava that everything that was between them was real, and she is her own individual person, she doesn't have to be a clone. Sara tells Ava to disguise herself as a clone to escort Ray, Sara, and Gary past the other clones. Ava suits up, however, one Ava clone confronts the group of four, so back to back, Sara and Ava fight the clones from an inner circle, while Ray works fights some clones, and Gary hides. Taking down all the clones, the four escape the facility.

Wally and Amaya show up to confront the Darhk's with their captured Nate. Wally tries to run to free Nate, however, Norulls sucks all of Wally's speed and uses the lightning to take down Wally. Using her re-acquired animal totem, however, it is corrupted. Overcoming the totem, Amaya reverts the Totem's control to herself. Kuassa shows up and free's Nate, who catches Amaya after being thrown by Norulls. The heroes get back up, as Norulls uses some of her magic. Kuassa uses her water powers to deflect the magic, however, she is underpowered, and falls down. Norulls pulls the water totem from Kuassa's heart, killing her. Amaya holds her granddaughter, Kuassa in her arms as she dies. Wally runs Amaya and Nate back to the Waverider before Norulls uses her newly acquired Totem on them.

On the Waverider, Zari and Mick feel the death of Kuassa through the Totem bond, as they both reconcile. Sara and Ava have a drink as they both agree to ask Rip about what is up with the Ava clones. Amaya and Nate have a talk where they both take the blame for the death of Kuassa. Amaya goes to the jump ship and tells Gideon to make a course for Zambasei 1992.

Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was one of the best episodes all around. There were great storylines in the episode which each dealt with heavy themes, which were all reinforced with great acting by the cast, smart humor, and also some incredible music cues and visual techniques. Let's start off with the main story of the episode, the Ava is a clone story. We saw the idea of Ava having an individuality crisis, where she had no clue of what was real or not. The episode did a mostly good job of playing at that. I did love the grouping of Sara, Ray, and Gary, there was a great contrast in the personalities which made for some fun adventures. There were many great scenes from that story such confronting the parents, which was hilarious in every way, and I also enjoyed the Sara and Ava clone takedown. There was some great action, and the use of the over the head shot was brilliant. If I had to speculate, the Ava we are following is the original Ava, not a clone, however the base for the Ava clone. That way the character wouldn't feel as disposable, and there would be a sense of individuality for the character.

The next story I want to talk about in the episode was the Zari and Mick story. I sort of enjoyed it. There were a few times where a couple actions felt forced, however, the scenes were quick, there were great Mick moments, and the story by the end of the episode really came around. The next story in the episode focused on of the theme of family, which fitted neatly in the episode with the story between Amaya and Kuassa. The episode, first of all, showed the selfishness of both Kuassa and Amaya, where they had their opinions on Nate, how he is jeopardizing the existence of Mari and Kuassa, by being with Amaya. The episode played well with that idea. Also in the episode, we saw the death of Kuassa. The show seemed like it was building towards a redemption for the character, which was paid off in this episode. I did like the idea that Amaya didn't have too strong of a connection with Amaya, however, she still felt the immense guilt of seeing her descendent die in her arms. The fight leading up to that scene against Mallus was impressive, and I have to say the best scene in the episode, as we saw the capabilities of Mallus, and how it can go up against any member of the Legends team.

The cast of the episode was brilliant. I have to say that Masie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya/Vixen delivered the best performance in the episode; she was amazing. Paired with Tracy Ifeachor as Kuassa was brilliant. The dynamic of grandmother and granddaughter was interesting to see develop through this season, and the final sacrifice from Kuassa at the end of the episode really brought both the character's stories around, in a neat and fitting way. Everyone and I mean absolutely everyone was amazing in the episode in portraying the characters in the circumstances they were is. Starring in the episode we had Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe), Caity Lotz (Sara/ White Canary), Brandon Routh (Ray/ the Atom), Adam Tsekhman (Agent Gary), Nick Zano (Nate/ Steel), Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally/ Kid Flash), Neal McDonough (Damien Darhk), Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk/ Norulls), John Nobel (Mallus [voice]),  Tala Ashe (Zari Tomaz), Dominic Purcell (Mick/ Heatwave), and Amy Louise Pemberton (Gideon).

In conclusion, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was extremely entertaining. There was a lot of stories going on in the episode which were all greeted with great adventures throughout and fitting conclusions. All the stories were meet with great humor, amazing acting, and gorgeous visual techniques to make for one awesome episode. I will give this episode of Legends of Tomorrow an 8.75 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down below. There are only two more episodes of this season of Legends of Tomorrow, which is kind of sad, however, Supergirl will return after that in the same time slot.
