ARROW "THE DEVIL'S GREATEST TRICK" REVIEW

Season 6 Episode 13:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Arrow, and this time we see Cayden's plans escalate as we see his story unfold in flashbacks. In the episode, we also see some more Canary vs Canary action following the loss of Vince from last week, and also that fastest crossover. But spoilers ahead for the episode if you have not seen it, let's recap.

The episode opens up with Oliver and John suited up trying to find Cayden James and his allies. The two come across a room full of screens as a video of Cayden James appears. The video tells the two that Cayden is going to detonate his bomb over Star City at midnight. Back at the Arrow cave, Oliver tells Felicity and Alena, about the bomb being detonated as they show him the real, unedited video of Cayden's son being killed, by a mercenary, not Oliver. Meanwhile, we see Cayden talk to Laurel, Anatoly, and Ricardo, as he tells them that a helicopter will take them away before the bomb is detonated. We see a flashback to a year and a half ago where Cayden is hacking, as he stops some illegal funds. Cayden then goes to visit his son, Owen, after his basket ballgame, as he promises him that he will come to the next game.

In the present day, Black Canary is going on a rampage, tearing through  Cayden's men to find Black Siren. Curtis and Rene try to stop her, however, fail. Meanwhile, Felicity and Alena get a location on Cayden, With a call, the Flash shows up and drops Oliver and John to Cayden. Oliver shows Cayden the video on a tablet as Cayden sees that Oliver did not kill Owen. From looking at the code, Cayden sees that someone on his team re-created the video and killed his son. Holding Star City to the bomb, Oliver and John call up Rene and Curtis to help them catch Black Siren, Ricardo, and Anatoly.

Laurel Lance, is packing up some of her gear, but then she is confronted by Dinah. The two have a fight, with Dinah knocking Laurel to the ground time and time over. Quentin shows up, holds a gun to Dinah. Oliver then first a tie arrow around Laurel and Dinah. The rest of the teams show up as Oliver tells Dinah that they need Laurel alive. With a power dampener collar on her neck, Laurel is watched over by Quentin and Dinah, as the others go out to find Ricardo and Anatoly. Curtis and Rene capture Ricardo in the blink of an eye. Oliver and Joh go after Anatoly who tells Oliver that he never created the video or photo.

Felicity tells Oliver and the others that Cayden and the bomb are at the abandoned theater. Worried about losing his father, William goes to the abandoned theater. Oliver, John, and Anatoly meet Cayden at the theater. William shows up to the theater, and Oliver rushes over to him, shielding him. We see a flashback to a year and a half ago where Cayden looks at Owen's final basketball game from outside. Cayden is then taken by the FBI for hacking the illegal money a drug company made. Back in present day, Cayden says that it is symmetry that this fight started with his son and it ends with Oliver's son. Dinah and Quentin bring Laurel into the theater as Rene and Curtis do the same with Ricardo. Cayden confronts his former allies of killing his son. Laurel comes out and says that she created the video. With the bomb trigger in hand, Cayden walks up to Laurel and slaps her, however, he does not believe her. Felicity and Alena see that the trigger is messing up Laurel's collar, which turns off. Laurel uses her canary cry to blow everyone away. The villains start to flee. Anatoly escapes Rene and Curtis, and Ricardo escapes John. Outside, Dinah fights Laurel, as the two use their canary cry against each other knocking each other down. Quentin shows up with a gun which Dinah steals. Laurel uses her cry against Dinah as she fires the gun and both of the Canaries get knocked down with Laurel shot.

In the theater, William grabs the trigger to the bomb, but Cayden steals it off William. Oliver hugs William in his arms, thinking that this might be their final moments. Cayden sees this and lets down his guard. Oliver throws an arrow at the trigger, and points an arrow at Cayden, capturing him. Back at the Arrow cave, Oliver is glad that William is okay, not knowing what it would be like what Cayden went through. Felicity tells the teams that Anatoly, Ricardo, and Laurel are all out of town. Dinah leaves as Oliver tells her "your better than this."

In a holding cell, Oliver has a talk with Cayden. Cayden tells Oliver that he can get all the cities money back from an account. Cayden apologizes for his actions as he realizes that he was the fault of his son's death. Cayden makes one request to see his son's grave, which Oliver says can "happen." Cayden tells Oliver that he needs to be a "better father than he was." In a flashback we see Cayden in his Argus cell being told his son, Owen was killed. We cut to present day with Quentin caring for an injured Laurel in his car. The episode ends with Cayden getting a visit from Ricardo in his cell. Ricardo tells Cayden that he used him to take over Star City and that he was the one who got Owen killed and blamed Oliver for it. Ricardo kills Cayden, revealing himself as the true villain.

Overall, this episode was a really awesome episode which teased a lot of what is going to happen in the next few episodes. The episode showed us that Ricardo Diaz is the main villain of the season. It was kind of out of nowhere, as Ricardo has the least to do with the Green Arrow compared to Black Siren and Anatoly. However, Ricardo in the comics is named Richard Dragon and he is a reasonably well-known villain to the Green Arrow. It will be interesting to see how Richard Dragon takes on team Arrow and how he is going to take over Star City. In the episode we also got to see some Flash crossover, it was quick, but it happened. If you don't know, Barry has released from prison only a couple days ago, so it seems like he is back in action.

My favorite scene from the episode was the Black Canary vs Black Siren fight. That was awesome, both times we saw them go at it. There has been great set up in the way that Dinah desperately seeks revenge against Laurel for killing Vince. That was illustrated nicely throughout the episode. I feel as though the CG effects of the Canary Cry could have looked better, it looked a little off in the episode, however, the acting of Juliana Harkavy and Katie Cassidy did convey the feud better than any of the CG could. I am excited to see where their fights go, especially with Quentin in the mix.

Michael Emmerson was the stand out performance from tonight's episode. I can not praise him enough as he showed a more humane side to the character which I could sympathize with. From the acting in the flashbacks to where Cayden was more hopeful in his work of bringing justice to the contrast of present-day where Cayden is crumbling on the burden of nearly destroying a city, Emmerson bought the character to a full circle. There was nice symmetry in the character's arc with him ending up recognizing that he was the fault of his son's death. It was kind of sad to see the character killed, however, Michael Emmerson was amazing when he was on the show.

The rest of the cast in the episode was great as always. Starring in the episode was Stephen Amell (Oliver/ Green Arrow), Jack Moore (William Queen), Emilly Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), David Ramsey (John/ Spartan), Kacey Rohl (Alena),  Juliana Harkavy (Dinah/ Black Canary)Echo Kellum (Curtis/ Mr. Teriffic), Rick Gonzalez (Rene/ Wild Dog), Willa Holland, (Thea Queen), Jesse Irving (Owen James), Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance), Katie Cassidy (Black Siren), David Nykl (Anatoly), and Kirk Acevedo (Ricardo Diaz).

In conclusion, this episode of Arrow was very exciting. We had the Canary fights which were amazing to see unfold and created a new storyline that has weight to it. The episode had a great flashback story which humanized the character of Cayden James who was portrayed perfectly by Michael Emmerson. This episode was a well-directed story by J.J Makaro. I will give this episode of Arrow a 9 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts and/ or opinions on this episode of Arrow down in the comments below.
