BLACK LIGHTNING "THE RESURRECTION" REVIEW

Season 1 Episode 1:

Hey, everyone, we are here for the series premiere of Black Lightning. This is such an awesome episode to start the series off. We will do a small recap, review the show and talk about how this fits into the Arrowverse. So spoilers for the episode ahead, let's recap.

In the episode, Jefferson Pierce picks up his oldest daughter, Anissa from the police station, where they go to an event at Garfield High School, the school where Jefferson is the principle. At the event, Anissa finds her younger sister, Jenifer who says she is going to a party. At the event, Jefferson talks to his ex-wife, Lynn who is trying to get with again.

Meanwhile, at the party, Jenifer, gets involved with a member of the 100 gang, Will. Tracking down his daughter, Jefferson goes to the party and confronts the gang with his daughter not seeing his act. After taking down some of the gang members, Jefferson escapes the police and goes to a shoe store, where he meets with his father figure, Peter Gambi. There, Peter tells Jefferson that he needs to become the hero he once was, but Jefferson does not want to as that very thing got him a divorce.

The next day, Jefferson is at the school, in his office where he watches a video that was sent from Peter. The video contained a small news clip of Jefferson as the hero, Black Lightning stopping a robbery. At school, Will, the member of the 100 gang confronts Jenifer. She tells her to get off, and then Anissa knocks him down. Will is about to pull out a gun, but then Jefferson stops him and says that he called the cops, but then Will runs away.

Later on, Jefferson talks to Lala, a member of the 100 gang. He tells him to stop Will from being near his daughters and Garfield High, which Lala agrees to. Lala starts to be mean to a child, and Jefferson stops him. Lala gets his cool and stops and tells Jefferson that he owes him one. At school, Will and some members of the 100 gang walk into Jenifer's classroom, where Anissa is teaching. Will takes Jenifer and Anissa hostage, leaving the school in shock. After a talk with Lynn, Jefferson says he is going to "get back out girls". Jefferson goes to Peter's store where the two go the basement. There Peter shows Jefferson a new version of the Black Lightning suit that he has been working on.

Suited up, Jefferson goes to the motel where the 100 gang are keeping his daughters captive. Jefferson uses his meta lightning abilities to take down members of the gang. Jefferson confronts Will and levitates him with his lightning. Jefferson then drops Will on his car. Jefferson free's his daughters and deepens his voice to keep his identity a secret. Back home, Jefferson hugs Lynn, Anissa, and Jenifer, acting as though he did not know anything.

Meanwhile, Lala is taken by Black Lightning's old enemy, Tobias Whale who tells Lala that he has to kill Black Lightning from his resurrection. The episode ends at the Pierce household where Anissa goes to the bathroom. She holds onto the sink and her hands start to glow as she breaks the sink.

Ok, this was an excellent start to the season. The aesthetic that the show was great. I like the idea of the superhero family that the show has and will elaborate on further in the season. The show also dealt with some social issues in a way which did not shove it in your face, it was all a part of the plot in some way. Looking at the film techniques of the show, they were done relatively well. The cinematography was mostly great, especially in that motel fight. The music that was used in the show was great and made for some awesome scenes. From the Jack White playing over the motel scene, it was great. Oh if you could not tell, that motel scene was my favorite scene in the episode, it was everything I wanted from the charcter in the show.

In the episode, we saw some easter eggs to the character's past. We saw the classic suit he has in the comics in the old news clip. The suit he is wearing now is obviously a heavily modified suit like all superheroes on screen. The suit does look really neat, with the small circuit printing details, it adds so much. The only complaint I have with this whole get up Jefferson has is that it was the Clarke Kent Superman plot hole. I feel as though Anissa and Jenifer should be able to see that Black Lightning is their father, he is only wearing shades and deepening his voice, he has the same build, skin color, and facial hair.

The cast of the episode was absolutely brilliant. Cress Williams was amazing as Jefferson Piecer/ Black Lightning. He sold the whole retired hero thing really well and his acting made it believable that he was fighting for his family. The rest of the cast was also really good in the episode as they sole the relationships that they had with one another. In the episode was had Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce), China Ann McClain (Jenifer Pierce), James Remar (Peter Gambi), Christine Adamas (Lynn Pierce), Damon Gupton (Inspector Henderson), Dabier (Will), William Catlett (Lala), and Marvin Jones III (Tobias Whale).

In terms of the Arrowverse, this show is standalone. You say this takes place on a separate Earth in the multiverse, and maybe in season two later this year there will be a crossover. The only way you could connect this show to the Flash and Arrow is that on one of the news report someone said that "other communities have heroes, but we call Black Lightning a vigilante" that could refer to the Flash in Central City. But until we get a crossover, this is a standalone show, which is still considered a DCTV show.

In conclusion, the series premiere of Black Lightning was a gret way to start off the series. The episode was not perfect, and no pilot of any episode is. It will take a couple of episodes for the show to truley find its placing in tone and theme. This episode thought did have great action which was complimented by gret acting and an awesome soundtrack. I will give this episode an 8 out of 10.
