RIVERDALE "NO EXIT" REVIEW
Chapter 44:
After a half season of absence, we are back with brand new reviews and episodes of Riverdale, with Magey Kiley directing this first episode back as we follow Riverdale on quarantine by the government, and a series of other messes. Spoilers ahead for the episode, lets recap.
Back in Riverdale, Cheryl and Toni are banned from the Serpents after stealing, while the Serpents offer Veronica security as she hooks up with Regie who was attacked by the Griffin gang. Betty then houses the kids from the Sisters, but Alice sends them to the ranch. Back with the Serpents, Jughead sends Fangs to go undercover in Hiram's Griffin gang.
Archie has made it into the US-Canada border with his dog, as he has gone undercover as a park ranger. At the park, Archie gets attacked by a bear, with severe wounds, and tries to heal himself as help comes. Archie falls asleep and goes on a hallucination where he plays Griffins and Gargoyles with the prison Warden, and then Jughead, Betty, and Veronica, which eventually ends up with him killing another dream version of himself. Help comes and attempts to rescue an unconscious Archie.
So, to start off, the story of the episode felt a little all over the place. It really could be broadly summed up into Archie's story and Riverdale's story, as I did in the recap. The weird thing is that I kind of preferred Archie's storyline more. There felt like a small sense of stakes, and the story showed the mind the of Archie Andrews, and him becoming a little more self-aware of the dumb ass he is. I did like how this G&G game is inside Archie's head, even though he has only heard of it mostly in passing.
When looking at what was going on in the town of Riverdale, I found a few things weird such as Cheryl and Toni being robbers. It felt out of character, but I am glad that they might get a separate story away from the Serpents.
Veronica's story this episode, and in the season, in general, is my least favorite. I just don't like the idea of her owning a business. It takes away from the realism of the show first of all. However, it also feels out of line with the character where she is using money which Hiram got through what seems like drug trafficking, and she's okay with it. Also from a visual standpoint, seeing Veronica and Hiram is visually similar settings (which are both in a high class) there is a similarity between the two, when there shouldn't be, and we should see the reasons as to why Veronica and the rest of the kids see Hiram as a grand threat and give them more of a challenge if they hang out more in their school student lounge or in Archie's garage.
Starring in the episode we had KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones), Charles Melton (Reggie Mantle), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews), Skeet Ulrich (FP Jones), Jordan Connor (Sweet Pea), Mรคdchen Amick (Alice Cooper), Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy), and Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge).
Anyway, with great cinematography in the show, the episode looked great visually, but from a story standpoint, it was very flimsy. To quote Jughead "Riverdale is a haunted shell of its former self" is the best way to describe this episode and season three in general. I will give this episode a 7 out of 10.
