CLOAK AND DAGGER REVIEW
Season 1 Episode 1 & 2:
A new Marvel tv series has dropped an in this part of the universe we travel to New Orleans where we see Gina Prince-Bythewood and Alex Garcia Lopez tell the origin stories of Tyrone and Tandy as Cloak and Dagger, two troubled teens with a horrific past who meet each other once again, with their abilities being connected with one another. So spoilers ahead for the premiere, let's go through it.
The episode starts off around eight or nine years ago where we see Tyrone with his brother, who gets shot, while Tandy sees her father killed in a car crash. Tyrone and Tandy fall in the ocean, as a blast of a mysterious force hits them. Years later in the present day (pre-snap), we see Tyrone being a good school kid, while Tandy is out stealing items from different people, making a living.
One day at a party, Tyrone, and Tandy meet again (not knowing who each other are), with Tandy stealing Tyrone's wallet. Tyrone stops her, and their powers activate, with the two running away. Back home, Tyrone falls asleep as he teleports, he finds the 'cop' that killed his brother. The same thing happens twice, the second time, Tyrone runs away from the murderer from teleporting into his car trunk. Running into a guy she stole from, Tandy finds herself in an alleyway nearly being raped. Accidentally, Tandy activates her light daggers, stabbing the guy running away.
After some flashbacks, and a visit with to her drunken mother, Tandy tries to run away, however using the help of her boyfriend, she goes to steal from a wedding. Being in trouble with his coach and the bullies at school, Tyrone teleports where he tries to confront the man who murdered his brother.
With the money and new identity, Tandy runs away, driving away in a car, with the guy she stabbed being alive. About to shoot his brother's murderer, Tyrone teleports into Tandy's car, as her powers activate, and the car crashes.
Overall, the premiere was an interesting way to open up the series. There were some interesting plot points which are set up for the season. But going through the episode, I loved the opening flashback scene of the episode, and all the flashback scenes and mind scenes in the episode. They were well crafted and showed where these characters were, and how they are no because of those events.
Tandy was an interesting character to explore. I liked seeing how broken the character really was and her situation is in the episode, Olivia Holt did a great job of conveying that. The story of her character in the episode was great, I liked how she reacted to the situation she was in, how her powers factored into that, and what she is going to do because of her stabbing the guy.
Tyrone was a more interesting character in my opinion. I liked where the character was going, and how his backstory influenced that. I do wish that the episode had a little more fun in the way they explored his powers, because, those are some fun powers to have. However it seems like there will be more of an emotional payoff at the end of the season with his powers, and how he first used them.
I do have to say that the last scene was my favorite scene in the episodes. It showed how these two characters are destined to be with each other, and it showed how broken these characters are. First of all, Tandy ignores the call from her boyfriend who appears to have been apprehended by the detective we saw in the episode. Tyrone went after the bad 'cop' who he shot, but Tyrone and the gun teleported to Tandy crashing the car. I am guessing that when Tyrone went to shoot the guy, he was thinking that this is the cause of his problems, and that though teleported him to the cause of his problems, Tandy. That is potential because Tandy stealing his wallet activated his powers, and Tyrone created more problems by using the powers.
Aubrey Joseph was great as Tyrone. I liked the story arch of the character, and how drained out he is, and that was portrayed on screen really neatly. Olivia Holt was also great as Tandy, I got a sense of the broken lifestyle she leads, and she portrayed that really well. The rest of the cast of the episode was great. Starring in the episode we had Aubrey Joseph (Tyrone Johnson/ Cloak), Olivia Holt (Tandy Bowen/ Dagger), Carl Lundstedt (Liam Walsh), Gloria Reuben (Adina Johnson), Miles Mussenden (Michael Johnson), Adrea Roth (Melissa Bowen), Noëlle Renée Bercy (Evita Fusilier), Emma Lahana (Detective O'Reilly), and J.D Evermore (Connors).
In conclusion, the premiere of Cloak and Dagger was an exciting start to the series where we saw a brilliant set up in flashbacks of the main protagonists and with amazing cinematography, music, and acting, we got a sense of where the characters are at the moment, and how that relates to the story being told. I will give these episodes of Cloak and Dagger an 8 out of 10.
