AVENGERS INFINITY WAR "DOCTOR STRANGE" DISCUSSION

The Sorcerer Supreme himself, Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, was one of the most pivotal characters of Infinity War, with his skills, his knowledge, and custody of the Time Stone, all of which gave him a chance to go up against Thanos while becoming a respectable hero with the other Avengers. Today we are talking about Doctor Strange in Infinity War, and how his role factors into Avengers 4. Spoilers ahead for Infinity War.

With the Asgardian ship invaded by Thanos, Heimdall sends the Hulk to Earth. The green beast turns back to Bruce Banner and crashes into the New York Sanctum Santorum, home of Doctor Strange and Wong. The two help up Banner and Stephen grabs Tony Stark where they are told about Thanos from Banner. The Black Order invades New York, and take Doctor Strange captive on their ship. Iron Man and Spider-Man follow Doctor Strange on the ship, while Wong stays at the Sanctum, and Bruce calls Captain America.

On the Black Order ship, Spiderman and Iron Man save Doctor Strange, as they head to Titan to face Thanos. On Titan, the three meet Star-Lord, Mantis, and Drax. Before Thanos arrives, Doctor Strange uses the Time Stone to look through 14 million timelines, where only one of them, they win. Thanos arrives on Titan, as Doctor Strange confronts the Mad Titan, and learns of his plan. The heroes on Titan fight Thanos, as they try to take the gauntlet off Thanos. Thanks to Star-Lord, that doesn't happen, and the heroes get their asses handed to them. With Tony about to be killed, Doctor Strange gives Thanos the Time Stone in exchange for Tony's life. Stephen tells Tony that "It was the only way". Thanos takes the green stone and leaves to Wakanda where he gets the Mind Stone.

Thor didn't aim for the head, as Thanos snaps his fingers and half of the life on the universe disappears. That includes Doctor Strange who tells Tony before he goes that "Its the end game now".

In Infinity War, Doctor Strange was one of the best characters with the lines, and action, and his overall role in the film. One of the biggest questions going into Infinity War was how was Stephen going to interact with Tony. After the Doctor Strange film two years ago, everyone thought that Doctor Strange was a magic Iron Man, so it was amazing pairing those two characters together and seeing how conflicting their personalities are. I loved how Doctor Strange was stern and serious in the situation, while Tony was being his light, humorous self.

On Titan, Doctor Strange looked through the 14 million timelines to see what ones they win. There were many things to note here:

  1. Doctor Strange can look past timelines where he dies
  2. Tony Stark is a pivotal part of defeating Thanos
  3. The "endgame" isn't necessarily about only defeating Thanos

The first two points are self-explanatory, however, the last point is interesting. There were many opportunities for Doctor Strange to defeat Thanos on Titan, however, he didn't. I believe that Doctor Strange's end goal was to destroy most of if not all, the Infinity Stones, therefore this would never happen again. In the film, Thanos even told Doctor Strange that he didn't "use his greatest weapon", the Eye of Agamotto, A.K.A, the Time Stone. This is because Stephen knew that everything had to play out with the destructions of the Infinity Stones. That most likely involves Tony Stark, which Stephen knew he had to let Tony live no matter what.

Another theory regarding why Stephen didn't use the Time Stone is possible because he tampered with it somehow. Stephen told Thanos that he didn't do anything to it, however, what if he did. It is possible that Stephen placed a spell on the stone where it will play up at some point, which could give the Avengers some advantage. It has been confirmed that the Avengers 4 set pictures which show the Avengers in their original costumes, is using the Civil War B.A.R.F technology. However, the Avengers wouldn't look into the past if they weren't planning on traveling to the past. The way this could be done is with the Time Stone, which the Avengers could potentially steal from Thanos.

With Doctor Strange turning to dust, it seems like he will be absent for most of Avengers 4. However beyond Avengers 4, Doctor Strange seems like he is a candidate to lead the Avengers team. However that depends on his next film (Which Doctor Strange 2 will happen), and what Original Avengers live through Avengers 4.

Anyway, Benedict Cumberbatch was amazing as Doctor Strange in Infinity War, becoming one of the best characters in the film. From his butting heads with Tony Stark, his awesome wizard skills, and his ambiguous hints towards Avengers 4, the Sorcerer Supreme had an excellent role in Avengers Infinity War.
