SUPERGIRL "SCHOTT THROUGH THE HEART" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 14:

After two months of being on break (while Legends of Tomorrow season three was airing), Supergirl is back with brand new episodes from now until the season ends. The episode breaking the hiatus is directed by Glen Winter and focuses on the character of Winn Schott, and his background and how that is all catching up to him now. Let's recap and the episode, then review.

While at a karaoke bar, Winn sees that his prisoned father, the "Toyman" is dead. Cutting to the funeral, Winn is approached by his mother, Mary, who tells him she can finally see him. The coffin of Winn's father blows up. Back at the DEO, Winn has a talk with his mother where we learn that she was forced to leave him as Winn's father threatened to kill Winn if she went for him. Flying Robot Monkeys invade the DEO base, as Supergirl fights them off. Experimenting on the robots, Winn and Mary find out that someone else is doing the work of the Toyman. Looking at a battery, Mary sees a company logo, grabs a gun, and goes to a warehouse.

J'onn and M'yrnn are having Alex over at their apartment for a dinner. Alex discovers that M'yrnn is suffering from dementia, however, doesn't tell J'onn because M'yrnn told her not to. With his mother missing, Winn goes with Supergirl, Mon-El, and Jimmy to rescue Mary, who is captured by the Toyman's apprentice. At the warehouse, Supergirl and Mon-El fight off some explosive toy planes and then move onto fighting a giant dinosaur robot. Jimmy holds off some other deadly toys, while Winn frees his mother from the claw. Winn uses a reprogramed robotic monkey to stop the apprentice, saving his mother.

The episode ends at the karaoke bar, where Winn and Mary do a duet of "Take me on", while Alex holds J'onn, knowing that he knows his father has dementia. Mon-El telling Kara that the main mission of the Legion of Doom is to take out the third world killer. The episode ends with Jimmy talking to Lena on the phone who has Samantha in a medical bay in a warehouse.

Overall, this episode of Supergirl was a brilliantly crafted episode in the way that it handled the main story and the side story and how they both connected with each other in themes. The character of Winn hasn't had too much backstory, but this episode dropped some amazing insight into the character and how he reacts when his past catches up with him. I liked the idea in the episode of Winn was kind of sad that his father died, but also not due to the fact that he was a lunatic. The relationship between Mary and Winn in the episode was well played. The two had great scenes together, especially when Winn didn't want to accept the fact that his mother was coming back into his life, because she abandoned him years ago. But by the end of the episode, it worked out in a believable manner, when Winn didn't want to lose his other parent.

The parallel to this story was J'onn and M'yrnn. In the episode, we had W'yrnn trying to not hut his son by telling he had dimension./ He tried to keep J'onn from knowing about him, like what Mary did to Winn, except this scenario, no one was threatened. With the J'onn story, we go some insight on J'onn in his experience on Earth, which was neat to see in the episode.

The action scenes in the episode we well illustrated. I loved that Flying Monkey invasion on the DEO. The cinematography used in the scene to depict Supergirl in action was amazing, and I don't know if it is because the show was off the air for a bit, but the way that they used Kara's powers in the episode looked stylistically different, in a good way. The end scene where Mon reveals the Legion's true intentions, was in my opinion, the best scene of the episode. I liked the way that they played on this teaser throughout the episode with kara hardcore friend zoning Mon, thinking he wanted to tell her that he wanted to be with her, but he told her the truth. The third world killer is the one who destroys Earth in the future, so they are back in time wanting to take her down. I excited to see this play out in the rest of the season.

Jeremy Jordan was great in the episode as Winn Schott. The portrayal of the character was great in the episode, especially with the polarizing expressions, the character had in the scene because he had no idea how to feel about the scenario's surrounding him. Jordan did a fabulous job, and it was great seeing this episode center around his character. The rest of the cast was brilliant in the episode. Starring in the episode we had Laurie Metcalf (Mary McGowan), Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers/ Supergirl), Chris Wood (Mon-El), Mechad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Brooke Smith (Jacqueline Nimball), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), David Harewood (J'onn J'onzz/ Martian Manhunter), Carl Lumbly (M'yrnn J'onzz), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), and Odette Annable (Samantha Arias/Reign).

In conclusion, this episode of Supergirl was an exciting way to start up the rest of the season. With expanding on the character of Winn, we got a great story told, along with that was some great fast pace editing, mixed with great film techniques and great acting. I will give this episode of Supergirl an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below.
