BLACK LIGHTNING "THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIGHT: THE BOOK OF PAIN" REVIEW

Season 1 Episode 12:

We are back with the second to last episode of the first season of Black Lightning, this time directed by Oz Scott. In this episode, we follow up on all the villains of the season, as we uncover how they all connect with one another. Spoilers ahead for this episode of Black Lightning, let's recap.

With Khalil back and walking, Jefferson senses that there is something suspicious going on regarding his recovery. Meanwhile, Tobias is back, he is working with the ASA, who assigns him with the special task of capturing Black Lightning, not killing. Jefferson and Lynn start to get back together, however, they are torn apart when they have different views on Jenifer's powers. Gambi, Anissa, and Jefferson talk about the missing kids, and how Khalil could lead them there. Meeting with Khalil, Jenifer sees that he has changed, as an implant has been placed in his back to allow him to walk.

Being called by Tobias, Khalil is told to take down Black Lightning, by targetting Garfield high. At Garfield high, Jefferson and Anissa suit up when Khalil shows up tranquilizing people with some new tech. Anissa fights Syonide while Jefferson faces off against Tobias. Jefferson fights Tobias who has a padding to deflect the lightning powers. Khalil punches Jefferson killing him. Gambi sees the vitals, as Anissa and Jenifer run to their father. With the villains fleeing, the girls cry over their father, which activates Jenifer's powers, which resuscitated Jefferson to life.

The Pierce family goes with Gambi to a remote house where they give more medical attention to Jefferson while they hide from the ASA. The episode ends with Fody being told by the ASA that they want the body of Black Lightning and they want Thunder dead or alive, while Tobias recruits Lala back to the 100.

This episode of Black Lightning was exciting. I was glad that Khalil was brought back because I almost forgot about the character. The twist on the character was one that was teased, and it was great to see it play out in full effect. The way that the character was used in the episode was exciting, and I was liking the new look that the character had. I thoroughly enjoyed the way that the character was used in the episode. I liked how the character still had this dilemma about him, he used non-lethal darts on his old classmates, and we saw how he reacted when Jenifer showed up. I was glad that they didn't retcon the character of Khalil completely.

My favorite scene in the episode was the scene where Jefferson was brought back to life. The episode did a brilliant job in creating the family dynamic between Jefferson and the girls. I loved the way that the episode played with that, and how it resulted in Jefferson being brought back to life. There was brilliant acting, and I loved the way that Jefferson was brought back to life. I loved the look of the suit lighting up when Jenifer bought Jefferson back to life, it was a great way to show Jefferson coming back to life visually.

Jordan Calloway was amazing in the episode, the best performance in the episode in my opinion. I liked the way that the character was portrayed to be this different person from this experience he has been in, however, he ultimately is still the same character as we saw earlier in the season. Calloway was amazing, and I can't wait to see where the character goes.
The cast of the episode was great. Starring in the episode we had Cress Williams (Jefferson Pierce/ Black Lightning), Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce/ Thunder), China Ann McClain (Jenifer Pierce), Christine Adamas (Lynn Pierce), James Remar (Peter Gambi), Marvin Jones III (Tobias Whale, Charlbi Dean Kriek (Syonide), William Catlett (Lala), Skye P. Marshall (Kara Fowdy), and Gregg Henry (Martic Proctor).

In conclusion, this episode of Black Lightning was brilliant in the way it set up all the villains and their alignments for the season finale next week. I liked the performances in tonight's episode, as this episode had some great moments. I will give this episode of Black Lightning an 8 out of 10.
