ARROW "FUNDAMENTALS" REVIEW
Season 6 Episode 18:
Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Arrow, directed by Ben Hernandez Bray, and in this episode, we explore the effects that this season has on Oliver, as we dive deeper into Oliver's psychology as it manifest's into a series worth hallucinations. Spoilers ahead for this episode, let's recap.
Opening up the episode is a flashforward ten hours where we see Oliver in the season one Hood suit fighting his way through the Ricardo Diaz controlled police force.
The episode focuses on Oliver and Felicity finding out that Diaz goes to the police station at ten, every night. Felicity gets some evidence of Diaz having Captain Hill and District Attorney Armand under his payroll; however, it may sacrifice Oliver giving up his identity as the Green Arrow. Oliver and Quentin go to a meeting where Oliver has a talk with a Councilman. After an interaction with John, Oliver goes home where he loses his anger in front of William, where he goes to the Arrow cave to think. There Felicity visits and tells Oliver that she wants a separation. Oliver has a talk with Quentin on what to do. Later on, Oliver gets another, an unfriendly visit from Adrian Chase, AKA 'Prometheus". The two get in a fight as Adrian teases Oliver that he didn't die on Lian Yu.
Oliver does a test on himself as he learns that he was dosed with Vertigo, as he learns that it was the councilman who drugged him. With Adrian still in his head, Oliver goes in the elevator to call Quentin telling him about the Vertigo, and that he will be a little late to the meeting. Out of the elevator, Oliver finds Adrian commentating on him in the Queen manor where he finds a young Laurel. After more taunting from Adrian, Oliver finds himself looking at Laurel in the hospital bed, before she died, as the Laurel turns into Rene. Walking further, Oliver finds Raisa stabbed in the apartment as Diaz walks out and stabs Oliver. Seeing that it was all a hallucination, Oliver finds himself in the Arrow cave as he gets up, however, he is confronted by season one Oliver, the Hood, who tells Oliver that he "failed this city!", and there is only one way he can fix it.
With Adrian still in his vision, Oliver goes to the meeting which he talks to Quentin, as they decide to give the information on Diaz. After the meeting, Oliver goes to the police station, under the influence of Vertigo. Felicity contacts Quentin, who tries to stop Oliver, however, is knocked down. Que the first flash-forward scene. With Ricardo Diaz on the other side, Felicity manages to stop Oliver from getting killed, as the Vertigo wears off, Oliver escapes with Felicity. In the Arrow cave, Oliver looks on the tv where he learns he is impeached, making Quentin the mayor of Star City. Oliver goes to apologize to William at home. The episode ends with Diaz telling Laurel that Star City is now "open for business".
So, this was a brilliant episode. The way that this episode was crafted in tieing the plot of this season to the one of season one, was done in a brilliant fashion. With the show having taken many different and distinct turns from the season one plot, that being ridding Starling City of crime, it was great seeing the show tie it back to the start. Season five tied the plot of that season to the end of the flashbacks and the pilot, so it is almost ironic how Season Six ties itself to season six, in the way that Oliver has to take the same mission into his hands. With the city being as corrupt and crime-ridden as it was in season one. However in this season, Oliver will have a help of Felicity, John, and team Arrow, all of whom he must regain a relationship with.
I also did enjoy to return of Prometheus in this episode, and how he was only a manifestation of Oliver's mind in the episode. The way that the character was introduced was brilliant because it made you question everything. I did like the Vertigo twist, that was done to bring the character back. In the episode, the character did seem more friendly towards Oliver, I suppose that was a mix between the Adrian that Oliver knew as the District Attorney, as well as the Prometheus side to the character. I did like the comment that Adrian made in regards to Laurel (Earth-1) becoming Black Canary. It was sort of a wink at the audience to why Laurel was killed, she has no training.
In the episode we saw the effects of Vertigo on Oliver, so everything from Felicity breaking up with him, to the hospital scenes, and Adrian, that was all in his head, including the idea that Oliver is his own worst enemy. All of this was interesting to dive into an eventually lead to the return of the Hood. I do wish that the episode dived into this concept a little more, and the reason for why Oliver sees himself as his own worst enemy. I do love the way that the episode started, with the hood fighting his way through the Star City police department. It was a spectacular fight scene, and it also created suspense in wonder in what will lead up to this moment.
Josh Segarra was back as Adrian Chase/ Prometheus, and he was absolutely amazing in the episode. The way that the character is portrayed to be this embodiment of Oliver's wrongdoings was great. In being a figure that was a villain and anti-hero hero to Oliver, we got some great commentary on all that was going on in Oliver's head. I was pleased that the character returned for this episode because it made it all the more exciting. The rest of the cast was brilliant in the episode. Starring in the episode we had Stephen Amell (Oliver/ Green Arrow), Emilly Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance), David Ramsey (John Diggle/ Spartan), Kathleen Gati (Raisa), Jack Moore (William Queen), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah/ Black Canary), Echo Kellum (Curtis/ Mr. Teriffic), Rick Gonzalez (Rene/ Wilddog), Katie Cassidy (Laurel/ Black Siren), Kirk Acevedo (Ricardo Diaz).
In conclusion, this episode of Arrow was exciting in the way that it created this concept for the episode. Starting off the episode with the flashforward created suspense, in the lead-up, where we saw a series worth of baggage relate back to the story of the show currently in an interesting manner. With the return of Josh Segarra and a talented cast, this episode was an interesting way to explore Oliver. I will give this episode of Arrow an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on this episode. You can click on the left for more Arrow, and on the right for more DCTV. As always thanks for reading, take care.
