LEGENDS OF TOMORROW "NECROMANCING THE STONE" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 15:

Hey everyone, a new episode of Legends of Tomorrow, directed by April Mullen, is out and like last week, this episode focuses on the death stone, and how that impacts the whole team, especially Sara, as we see a series of guest stars in the episode derived from the story of the episode, such as Jesse Quick, Commander Steel, and Constantine. So spoilers ahead from the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens up with Sara having a nightmare with a little girl on board a desolate Wave rider. Sara wakes up and finds herself in bed with Ava. The team meets up as Sara sends everyone out to fix anachronisms, while Ray and Mick experiment on the Fire Totem. Mick goes to sleep as Ray does experiments with the fire Totem. Meanwhile, Sara hears a sound coming from the death Totem. Sara opens the safe box as she turns around and finds herself in Black Canary attire. Sara has a talk with her past self, as she realizes that she needs to be the death Totem bearer. Back from their mission, Amaya and Zari find an unconscious Ray. The two wake up Mick and bring Ray to the med bay. Mick and Amaya go out to find who hurt Ray, and they find a ghostly looking Sara, who is possessing the death Totem. The two fight their possessed captain, as Amaya injures her leg while Mick's heat gun is destroyed. Meanwhile, we see that Sara is trapped in the Mallus land. On the Waverider, possessed Sara gets a holographic call from Ava, and Ava sees that something is not right.

In the med bay, Amaya is getting treated as Nate and Wally return. Holographic Ava talks to the rest of the Legends in the med bay where she tells them that she will try to get Constantine to help Sara. Gideon shuts offline and as the Waverider goes into a lockdown. The Hologram goes away and all the doors shut down. Wally uses the vibrating hand to break open the med bay door as he runs out to confront Sara as he sees Jesse Quick. Wally knows that what he is seeing is not Jesse. After reconciling with this imposter, Wally gets knocked out with the cold gun by the possessed Sara. In New York, 2018, Gary and Ava meet Constantine where Ava tells him about Sara being possessed by the death Totem. Constantine tells the agents that the lost tribe of Zamabsie who held the death Totem, sided with Mallus, thus the Totem having a connection to the demon. Constantine and Ava attempt to do an exorcist to find Mallus, however, Mallus locks them out. Nate goes out to find Wally. Meanwhile, Zari attempts to get the jump ship open so the remaining Legends can escape and get help. While in the mainframe, Zari sees her younger brother, Behran. Zari starts to tear up. Zari gets her grip together as she uses the wind Totem to blow possessed Sara's illusions away. Possessed Sara gets up as she knocks out Zari.

Meanwhile, Constantine tries to track down the Waverider however he has trouble finding a spell to do so. Using a Dungeons and Dragons analogy, Gary hints towards Constantine to use track the death Totem with his magic, that way they can get to the Waverider and save Sara. After kissing Gary, Constantine gathers some items, rubs his hands together, and starts to make magic. In the Mallus land, we see Sara talking to Nora Darhk. Nora tells Sara that she blames Oliver for her death, and she should do the same. Sara ignores the retorts from Nora, and she says that she choose the path she lives on. In the Mallus land, Sara sees a recreation of her first kill in the League of Assassins, where she sees the girl she saw in her nightmares is the daughter of the man she killed. On the Waverider, with not knowing where Zari is, Amaya tells Nate to go use the Earth Totem; with the heart of a hero, he will not be possessed or killed by the Totem. Nate goes to the front of the ship to get the stone. He grabs it and starts to walk back, however, he is confronted by the possessed Sara who is taking the form of Henry Heywood, Nate's grandfather. Henry tells Nate that he is a fail as he beats him to the ground.

Using the Time Burea watch, Constantine, Gary, and Ava track and board the Waverider in the time stream. Possessed Sara throws back the agents as Constantine attempts an exorcism on Sara. The possessed Sara turns into the voice of Astra. Constantine gets tormented, as the possessed Sara lifts Constantine up and knocks him out. With Nate not returning, Amaya has one idea, Mick needs to wield the fire Totem. Amaya persuades Mick that he has a good heart, proven by the fact he hasn't left the Legends. Mick puts on the fire Totem, as he creates fire in his hands. Mick finds possessed Sara as he throws a fireball into the demonized captain. With Sara on the ground, Ava rushes over to Sara and tries to wake her up. In the Mallus land, Sara tells Nora that she does not have to look back on her past, but be a better person, as the death will not possess her. In the real world, Sara levitates and awakes is regular Sara as she reunites with Ava while Constantine lights his cigarette on Mick's fire Totem powers. Sara and Constantine have a drink together as they discuss what went on, and Sara tells Constantine that someday he could have a room on the Waverider. Sara goes to the med bay where she apologizes to Ray and the rest of the team. Sara then goes to see Ava and tells her that there is a darkness within her that she does not want to expose to anyone else, so the two break up. The episode ends with Constantine playing Dungeons and Dragons with Gary and his friends.

Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was an exciting episode, it had me on the edge of my seat while I was watching this episode because I had no idea where this was going to lead to. Let's start off with the premise of the episode, Sara being tempted by the Death Totem. It was a fitting match for the character as we saw the connections between Sara and the concept of death in the episode as we saw a recollection of all the past memories of Sara. I absolutely freaked out when we saw Arrow season two Sara as Black Canary. That was something we have not seen since 2014, and it was great to see its return to the screen in 2018. The actual premise of the episode would have been potentially worthy of a crossover event, that would be if Zari took the jump ship to Central City 2018. This episode did have plenty of characters as to which it did feel like a crossover. Zari's vision with her younger brother was interesting. They used Behran as a child and not as an adult as we saw him before. At first there felt kind of less of a connection with that character, however, it was pulled off relatively well. The return of Commander Steel was awesome. That the first time since season two we have seen a JSA member apart from Vixen. I did enjoy how Nate was being crushed by the crippling guilt that he sent his grandfather to his death. Jesse Quick returned to the DCTV-verse as Wally's bait for the possessed Sara. It was interesting to see Wally almost reconcile with Jesse, and glad that he broke it off with her. It seemed to more or less tie up the loose ends that the character had, with the emotional trauma of breaking up with Jesse.

In the episode I did feel like the Ava and Sara relationship was a little too forced, it didn't feel like it flowed nor was developed properly. It felt like the relationship was rushed along for the purpose of the story. In the episode, we saw the return of Constantine, which was awesome. The re-introduction was great, as we saw what the character is doing in his day to day life. In the episode, the character had this nice blend of humor and seriousness which he fitted the tone of the show. In the episode, we saw the character's story from his own show spill over into this episode which was a nice hat tip to anyone who watched that. The visual techniques in the episode. I was not too much of a fan of the cinematography, however, an amazing job was done with the lighting. There was mysterious and mode setting lighting used in the episode creating some gorgeous shots, especially with Sara and Mora in the Mallus land, with the blue lighting shining everywhere. The CG was also pretty good in the episode. It looked a little more polished, I did love the effects used by Mick wielding the fire totem Constantine magic tricks looked awesome and created a better immersion into the episode.

There were some great scenes in the episode. I enjoyed seeing Mick wield the fire Totem, especially after his heat gun was destroyed. What I am assuming is that Mick will either use the fire totem, or he will get a new heat gun, and the fire Totem will be used by Jax (Franz Drameh), in the finale, which Jax is returning for. I have to say my favorite was the last talk with Sara and Constantine. We saw the tease for Constantine being a member of the Legends in season four, which it has not been confirmed, but the show is most likely getting picked up for another season. With the dialogue, it was heavily implied that in season four Constantine will be a full-fledged member of Legends of Tomorrow.

Caity Lotz as the lead of the episode was exceptional. We saw an emotional instability in the character and it was very much bought to life a real problem with the acting of Lotz. The reactions to the scenarios going on added to the depth of the character and how she is as a captain. There were so many forms we saw Sara Lance in, we saw her in the death Totem possessed form as well as the Black Canary form, which as I said earlier was fantastic to see. Matt Ryan was amazing in this episode as Constantine, returning to the show. In carrying a great variety of traits in the episode such as a humorous side as well as a serious side, we saw the character adapted to the scenes. With charming chemistry with everyone on screen, Ryan really brought the character on Constantine to life once again. The cast of the episode was great. At the beginning of the episode, some of the actings was a little weak, in the expression, however in the more emotional scenes, the acting improved a great deal. Starring in the episode we had Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe), Tala Ashe (Zari Tomaz), Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally/ Kid Flash), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya/ Vixen), Dominic Purcell (Mick/ Heatwave), Nick Zano (Nate/ Steel), Amy Louise Pemberton (Gideon), Brandon Routh (Ray/ the Atom), Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk),  Violett Beane (Jesse Quick), Matthew MacCaull (Henry/ Commander Steel), Bodhi Sabongui (Behran Tomaz), and Adam Tsekhman (Agent Gary).

In conclusion, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow is a rememberable one, from the insane plot with Sara being possessed with the insane amount of guest stars being connected to our main heroes, created an exciting adventure to follow, along with impressive visuals effects and lighting, this episode was a  masterpiece to look at. I will give this episode an 8.75 out of 10. What did you think of the episode? Let me know your favorite characters and scenes by dropping a comment below.
