ARROW "DEATHSTROKE RETURNS" REVIEW

Season 6 Episode 5:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Arrow where we see the return of Deathstroke, the first part in a two-episode storyline. There is also the reveal of the identity of the Vigilante character. Spoilers ahead of the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens up with Dinah talking to Council Woman Pollard outside. The two are nearly shot by an assassin, who gets away free. At the Mayor's office, Rene gets a call from Oliver to cover for him at the office. At Oliver's apartment, Slade tells Oliver that he needs to go rescue his son, Joseph. He tells Oliver that he is going to take a more diplomatic approach to rescue Joseph. But Slade doesn't pressure Oliver to come. We then flashback to 13 years ago in New Zealand, where Slade and Joseph are on a camping trip, however, Slade is on a mission as he bought his Deathstroke mask.

At the Arrow cave, Curtis and Felicity manage to get some footage of the assassin who is their old friend, Vigilante. They also concluded that Vigilante was going after Pollard as she wanted to create the anti-vigilante legislation.Meanwhile, Dinah and John are looking at the building Vigilante was in. The FBI agent investigating Oliver, Samanda asks John what he was doing and pulls him over for questioning. Meanwhile, Felicity goes over to Oliver's house where she visits William. She then speaks to Oliver and convinces him to go help Slade, because Slade helped him get William back.

Slade is packing his car to leave, but Oliver joins him. Slade thanks, Oliver and tells him that he only needs Mayor Queen and not the Green Arrow. Meanwhile, Dinah is staking out the Vigilante. She spots him and uses her Canary crime on him. The cry shatters his mask which he takes off, only to reveal the identity of the Vigilante being Dinah's thought dead partner/lover, Vincent Sobel.

In the Arrow cave, Dinah calls a meeting where she tells the team what happened and the identity of the Vigilante being Vincent. She tells the team that he got away from the fight. Dinah thought he died when they were captured by the gang in Central City. Felicity tries to track him, and she tells John that Oliver has gone out of the country to go to Kasina with Slade. Felicity then gets a call from Samanda to visit her for questioning.

In Kasina, Oliver and Slade meet up with a guy who is glad to see Slade, who he refers to as the Terminator. The man hands Slade a case and tells him that Joseph got into some trouble with a dangerous group, the Jackals. Back in Star City Felicity gets questioned by Samanda and quickly escapes with an excuse when Curtis finds a hit on the Vigilante.

Back in Kasina, Oliver and Slade go to the room they are staying in. Slade tells Oliver that he has to go to the prison where Joseph is being held, give them the money in the case Slade just got, and fly to London with Joseph and not tell him that he had anything to do with his release. Oliver asks Slade why he isn't coming, which Slade tells Oliver that he thinks Joseph cannot look him in the eye again.

We then flashback to Joseph and Slade on a camping trip where he is cooking some fish on a campfire. A man and his family walk past and Slade pulls out his phone and types "Eyes on target". In the Arrow cave, Felicity gets in the chair looking over the team in the field. They find the building that Vincent was working in and find a tone of bullets, enough to start a war. But there is no sign of Vincent.

In Kasina, Oliver meets with the prison manager who is a fan of Oliver. Oliver offers the money in return of Joseph. The manager tells Oliver that a couple days ago Joseph was killed in a fight. Oliver goes back to the motel he was staying at with Slade and tells him the tragic news. Slade is upset that he never knew if his son loved him, which Oliver tries to comfort him and tell him that he was his father and that he did admire him. We then flashback to the camping trip where Slade and Joseph are bonding and he asks the man he saw earlier (his target) to take a photo of him and his son.

In the Arrow cave, Dinah is training hard. John talks to her and tells her to not tire herself out. Dinah tells John that she thought Vincent died and she is shocked that he alive and now he is a murderer. Dinah goes on to talk about how Vincent used to make little paper flowers for her. Rene walks in the Arrow cave and tells the two that Pollard is having an interview in the Channel 52 building, the Vigilante's most likely next hit.

Slade and Oliver go to the prison where Slade asks to see his son's body, which the manager tells Slade is not in their possession. Slade starts to flip out and Oliver calms him down a bit. The prison manager tells them that Joseph was abducted by the Jackals. Slade and Oliver leave, with Slade determined to get his son back.

Dinah is out at the Channel 52 broadcast building where Pollard is being interviewed. She has gathered a series of cops to watch out for the Vigilante. Samanda shows up on the scene so she tells Felicity to stop John, Curtis, and Rene from suiting up and going out.

Back in Kasina, Slade shows Oliver a video of Joseph being taken by the Jackals. Slade is suited up ready to take down the Jackals and get his son back. Oliver offers to help him, but Slade tells him not to as he promised Oliver that he would only stay in his one world, that being a Mayor and a father. Oliver demands that he goes with Slade, but he falls asleep after Slade put something in his glass of water.

We then flashback to Joseph and Slade camping where Slade goes to the bathroom, he then finds the man he saw earlier and suited up as Deathstroke and asks about the whereabouts of Yao Fie. The man does not know where he is, so Slade kills him.

In Star City, Diggle shows up outside the broadcasting building. He talks to Dinah, who tells him she saw a bullet go through Vincent's head once, and she is prepared to do it again. She then makes Diggle leave before he is spotted by Samanda. In the broadcasting building, Vigilante is up on the roof. Police have surrounded the building and Pollard is being interviewed. However, the power shuts off and everyone goes crazy. Pollard quickly runs off stage and out into a hallway where she is face to face with the Vigilante. Dinah suits up as the Black Canary and stops him.The two go at it until a cop shows up. The cop accidentally shots Vigilante in the head. Dinah tells the cop to call an ambulance. While the cop does, Dinah removes the mask of Vigilante, where she finds a bullet in Vincent's head. The bullet falls right out and Vincent tells Dinah that she was not the only one who got powers that night. Dinah and Vincent part ways.

Oliver wakes up from being drugged and he finds a note in front of him from Slade telling him to go home. Oliver gets a call from William asking when he will come home, which Oliver replies "right now."

We then cut to the Jackals base, where Slade Wilson is suited up as Deathstroke, he starts to stab and shoot the gang members everywhere. Slade fights his way to a hall where he gets surrounded by a circle of armed guards. Slade takes off his helmet. We flashback to Slade and Joseph packing up their camping trip and leaving.

Back in Star City, Samanda confronts Dinah of being the Black Canary, which Dinah denies. Dinah looks in her car and finds a gift. She opens it up and finds a small paper flower, one like Vincent used to make for her.

Back at the Jackals base, we see Oliver armed with a gun spying on Slade being surrounded. The guy Slade got the case from earlier shows up and Slade asks where Joseph is. the guy tells him that he is not dead, or they do not have him, prisoner, as he is their boss. We then see Joseph show up greeting his father showing the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Overall this episode was a great episode which had to unrelated story arcs which were both great. The Black Canary and Vigilante plot was great in the episode. I enjoyed seeing the character of Black Canary be developed in such a way it tied her to one of the biggest mysteries of the shows. I was kind of surprised that Vincent was the Vigilante, many people were expecting someone else, someone we saw a little more of the show, but this was a good pay off for the Black Canary charcter.

The main story arc in the episode, Deathstroke returns, what a great arc. I enjoyed the symmetry of Oliver helping Slade find Joseph as Slade helped Oliver find William. The only difference here is that Joseph didn't fall far from the tree, where William did. The end scene with Deathstroke was by far the best scene in the episode. The action was great, and it was a little fore gorry than what we have seen from Arrow before, which was a good thing.

Manu Benett was great in the episode was Slade Wilson/ Deathstroke. I enjoyed the return of the character in the show and the story arc he went through. Seeing a more humane side of Slade was something great to see, and it makes you think of the other side of Slade, that one that is damaged the most.

Juliana Harkavy was great in the episode as well. She absolutely killed it. The emotional stakes the charcter had was great in the episode, a new arch for the character to have. I liked seeing the way the character reacted to this situation, and it dived deeper into the mentality of the character showing how strong she is amd how prepeared she was to stop Vincent, but yet there was still a part of her that was reluctant to let her go.

The rest of the cast was great in the episode we had Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), David Ramsey (John Diggle/Green Arrow), Emilly Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), Echo Kellum (Curtis/ Mr. Terrific),  Rick Gonzalez (Rene/ Wilddog), Sydelle Noel (Samanda Watson), Johann Urb (Vincent/Vigilante), William Franklyn-Miller (young Joseph Wilson), and Liam Hall (Joseph Hall).

In conclusion, this episode of Arrow was great, there was the Vigilante arc in the episode which was great to see the mystery concluded, and there was the amazing Deathstroke arc which was awesome to see unfold on screen, and I can not wait for next week's episode, especially after this cliffhanger. I will give this episode of Arrow a 9 out of 10. Please comment below your thoughts on the episode, any part, whether it be about Vigilante or Deathstroke, comment below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
