ADVENTURE TIME "BLENANAS" REVIEW

Season 10 Episode 9:

Here we are, after a few months without Adventure Time we are back with four brand new episodes, and the first of those episodes is "Belnanas" directed by Diana Lafyatis, which only partially mentions the cliffhanger from the previous group of episodes. So spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Adventure Time, here we go.

After learning that Jake will "Be right back", Finn reads a magazine titled "Ble". In the magazine, Finn sees a caption submission you can give to an image in the magazine. Believing he is a comical genius, Finn writes down "Ouch! Hey, this isn't helping!". Asking BMO whether or not his caption is funny, BMO tells Finn that it isn't funny. While psychotically testing security measures in the Candy Kingdom, Finn asks Princess Bubblegum whether or not she thinks his caption is funny. Bubblegum gives Finn a book to read to learn comedy. Finn goes to ask the Ice King about his caption. Ice King tells Finn that he has been a long time fan of Ble, so Ice King uses his magical totem to teleport to the Ble headquarters to get Finn's caption published.

Outside the Headquarters, Finn and Ice King are confronted by a Pudding troll guard, who attempts to stop Finn and Ice King from entering.Ice King and Finn pass Pudding and go into the building where they find a pile of Ice King's previous mailings to Ble. In the building, Finn, Ice King, and Pudding find that everyone is dead. Finn and Ice King read the winning caption and see that it wasn't that funny. Using a horn, Ice King summons all the Penguins to the Ble headquarters where along with Ice King, Pudding, and Finn, they create a new Ble issue with Fiona and Cake stories, along with Finn's caption. Ice King tells the Penguins to destroy the publication. Knowing that nostalgia should be let go, Finn goes home with the issue of Ble. About to show BMO his new Ble issue, Finn slips on a banana peel and makes BMO and Neptr laugh.

Although it was primarily a filler episode, this episode of Adventure Time was a fun episode. With the basic premise of wanting to make BMO laugh, the episode succeeded in developing a story from a simple thread. The way that one interaction flowed to the other was written well. If you wanted proof that Princess Bubblegum was a terrible ruler, you got your proof in this episode, with Bubblegum destroying her own people's property. I did like the development of the Ice King and Finn story in the episode and how that isn't as so black and white as it was earlier. The episode also glossed over some intense stuff like the Pudding guard being the security of a building full of skeletons for the past half millennium. The episode was used primarily for comedy, so it was fine to see that being glossed over.

The animation of the episode was good. At times it looked a little wonky, which was a shame. The parts where that happened was when Finn was walking in the forest after seeing Bubblegum. However, I did enjoy the unique style of animation used in the teleportation realm where Ice King lost part of his soul. It was awesome to see and created a neat diversity not only in look, however in color. In the episode, there were great uses of lighting and coloring throughout the episode which made for some awesome shots.

The cast of the episode was great, the expression of the actors developed the characters in a neat way. Starring in the episode we had Jeremy Shada (Finn Mertens), Tom Kenny (Ice King), Niki Yang (BMO), Hynden Walch (Princess Bubblegum), Thurop Van Orman (Wishy), Steve Berg (Pudding guard), and Andy Milonakis (Neptr).

In conclusion, this episode of Adventure Time was an entertaining episode even with it being a filler. The episode followed a simple story where we explored the relationship between Finn and Ice King as well as hints towards Ble, before the Mushroom War. I will give this episode a 7.5 out of 10.
