BLACK PANTHER NON SPOILER REVIEW
It is finally here, the Marvel film that a lot of people have been waiting for, for a number of different reasons, Black Panther. This will be a non-spoiler review of the film so you can read through this before you see the film, or after. To start off, Black Panther as a whole is a fabulous film. There are a number of things that it does are amazing in this film, from the set up of the world that is Wakanda, creating a fictional religion of Wakanda, and the way that the film uses the characters are amazing.
Talking about Wakanda, we explored a lot of this nation and the different areas of it. How different tribes act, and live, and there is some great contrast in there. In the main city of Wakanda, we get to see these flash government buildings which T'Challa operates from, and where his throne is. In contrast to what is below, is regular retail buildings, which are yet high-tech, however, are incomparable to where T'Challa resides. From simple shots of food cooking to someone buying something, we get to see the people of Wakanda on the daily. Simple shots do help set up the land of Wakanda on the ground. We do get to see some awesome aerial shots of Wakanda when people land in Wakanda, and it looks amazing.
Black Panther does a great job of bringing forth and explaining this new religion of Wakanda. In the film, we see the rituals that everyone goes through to crown the new king of T'Challa. There were no parts of any spiritual acts which I questioned, I took them at face value, and they seemed self-explanatory. The film also worked off the acting to illustrate the effects that some of these acts have on people which were great to see, and it adds humanity to the characters, characters that we do not get to see many expressions of when suited up, such as Black Panther. But there were some impressive coloring shots of the spiritual acts in the films, which blew me away and looked so much better on screen.
The acting in the film was really amazing. I am not going to get into specifics of the characters, but the cast was amazing. There were two characters that stood out for me in the film. They were Kilmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and Shuri (Letitia Wright). I will get into the specifics of why in the spoiler review, and their character discussions. But let's talk about the man of the hour, Chadwick Boseman, as T'Challa, AKA, the Black Panther. Boseman was great in the film. There were some emotional scenes in the film, and Boseman absolutely killed it, on his delivery, and expression.
There were some flaws in the film. There are the obvious green screen flaws, where you can tell that the actors are in front of a green screen. That took me out of the moment for a second, and it was a shame that it was happening in a pivotal scene of the film. There was another problem I had with the film, it is more of a nitpick, but it has to with the music score. Not the soundtrack, that is amazing. But there is a score that is used when Black Panther flipped the car, and when he entered Wakanda, those are only two examples. It is a great musical piece, but it was used in scenes that didn't feel like they could be connected through music. Again, that is music, it does not take away from the story of the film at all, I just noticed that from the get-go because I saw a clip with that same music. Black Panther does fail on some story aspects though. There are scenes that are supposed to have high stakes, but you can't feel any, that is for some characters. There were sometimes that there did feel like some stakes for the characters. One last nitpick. There was this spinning camera shot which started from upside down to right up, and I got a little dizzy from looking at it because it went on for more than a couple seconds.
In conclusion, Black Panther is a well-made film. It is a film which is inspiring in the way it ends and how we see the character's story arcs in the film. Ryan Cooglar did an excellent job in directing this film, with the film techniques he used to bring to life the world of Wakanda. The cast of the film was great, Chadwick Boseman made an excellent return to the character from Civil War. There were a couple problems with the film, in the way that the story wanted you to feel one way, but you couldn't. Anyway, this was definitely an enjoyable film, that if you haven't seen, please go see. I will get the spoiler review, the character discussions, and my MCU ranking list out in the next couple of days. Until then, click on the left for Black Panther, and click on the right for the Incredibles 2 trailer. As always thanks for reading, take care.
