THE FLASH "THEREFORE I AM" REVIEW

Season 4 Episode 7:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of the Flash, where we get more insight into Clifford DeVoe and how the team is going about taking him down. So spoilers ahead of the episode, let's recap.

The episode focuses on Clifford DeVoe, four years ago where he is a university professor in Central City. There he shows his wife, Marlize his concept of an invention, a thinking cap which can have infinite thought. We then flash forward to present day where Barry and Joe are questioning Clifford at his house. Barry sees a painting of a Samurai. After finding no information, Barry and Joe leave.

Back at STAR Labs, the team starts to search for Clifford's past. We then flashback to four years ago where Marlize built the thinking cap for Clifford, who is watching tv as he sees Harrison Wells being interviewed the opening night of the particle accelerator.

In present-day Clifford is taking a lecture at the university, where Barry is in the class. After the class, Barry asks Clifford where he was when the particle accelerator went off, which he can not remember, and Barry asked if Clifford takes any public transport, which he does not. Barry takes DeVoe's cup from his desk without looking and goes back to STAR Labs. At the Labs, the cup is tested however there are no Meta-Human traces on the cup.Cisco then vibes the cup and finds Clifford and Marlize having dinner. Iris has a talk with Barry and tells him that he needs to stop only seeing want he wants to see.

We flashback to four years ago the night of particle accelerator opening. We see pre-flash Barry chase after a thief, and then we see Clifford and Marlize ask Harrison Wells some questions on his press conference, and he tells Clifford that his future will change. we see Clifford and Marlize leave and then they see the Particle accelerator start to go off, so Clifford puts on the Thinking cap that was built and hopes for it to charge with the Particle accelerator blast. Clifford puts on the cap and he is hit with the dark matter. Marlize goes looking for him and finds him alive.

At Barry's office in the present day, Barry is told to see Captain Singh. When Barry visits him he sees that the DeVoe's are there have they filed a complaint against Barry for stalking them, which Barry apologizes for and says he will not do it again. Back in his office, Iris visits Barry where she sees that he is investigating Clifford, and she tells him that he needs to stop.

Flashing back to four years ago, we see Clifford at his house and he has developed a Meta-Human gift of extreme intelligence, but then he collapses on the ground and Marlize comes to save him. At STAR Labs in the present day, Barry looks inside the Samurai suit and he sees that there is a camera inside. Barry assumes that Clifford is watching him, so he runs to the DeVoe house where Marlize leaves the house and Clifford is asleep. In the house, Barry searches around but does not find any clues. Marlize comes home and Barry quickly races out of the house.

We flashback to four years ago in a hospital where Clifford is told by a doctor that he cannot walk again as the particle accelerator damaged the muscles, which are shrinking at a fast rate. In the present day, Barry is at STAR Labs and he tells the team about the camera, but he accidentally reveals that he assumed DeVoe was behind it and he snuck into his house for answers. Barry gets a call from Joe, so Barry goes to the police station. At the station, Barry and Joe meet with Captain Singh and Marlize who tells the Captain that Barry broke into their house. Marlize is mad at Barry and slaps her.Captain Singh tells Barry that he is off duty for the next 2 weeks and that he is lucky he is not being arrested.

At his apartment, Barry tells Iris that he is off work for the next few weeks and there is a restraining order placed on him by the DeVoe's. Barry tells Iris that Clifford scares because he is on the brink of having a good life and he is scared that it is all going to get ripped away but Iris gives him a motivational speech.

In a flashback we see Clifford fall off the wheelchair in trying to get a book. He has a small breakdown but then he tells Marlize that he can build a chair which expands his lifespan. In the present day, Barry meets Clifford in his empty lecture class. Barry confronts Clifford on who he really is and Clifford confronts Barry on being the Flash, who leaves.

At STAR Labs Barry tells the team that Clifford knows he is the Flash, and the team believes Barry that Clifford is a threat. Cisco then dubs Clifford as "The Thinker" In walks Wally West who is greeted by the rest of the team, and then Iris reminds the team that the wedding is happening next week.

The episode ends with Clifford in his regular body in the mind space area. Marlize helps remove the top of his head where cables plug into his brain. The Thinker Helmet comes onto Clifford's head and he gets in the floating chair where he starts to look at a screen which is monitoring Barry and Iris.

Overall this episode was a really interesting episode with the set up of the Thinker. I enjoyed the situation Barry was placed in, being at the crossroad with needing to take the Thinker down, however not being allowed to as he has no proof of DeVoe being a villain.

The flashback scenes of the episode were great. I loved how they recreated the pre-flash season one moment with young Barry and young Iris and the Eobard Harrison Wells. I enjoyed seeing how Clifford fitted into the flashbacks and the idea how he was always there in the background.

Neil Sanders was great as Clifford DeVoe/the Thinker. I liked how the portrayal of the character on screen as a regular man who saw the world in a unique light to everyone else. I also did like the concept of the character going from the regular man to the full-blown Thinker. The cables that plug from Clifford's regular body to the big Thinker suit was a different transformation to turn into a villain which was great.
Kim Engelbrecht was also amazing in the episode as Marlize. The best scene of the episode was when she slapped Barry.

The rest of the cast was great we had Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Candice Patton (Iris West), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramone), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow), and Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells), and Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West).

In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was a great way to introduce the main villain of the season to the heroes of the show. There were neat callbacks to season one which was fun and I am overall excited for the rest of the season. I will give the episode an 8.5 out of 10.
