THE FLASH "REOBORN" REVIEW

Season 4 Episode 1:

The Flash is back for a brand new season, and the premiere of Season 4 brought us brand new adventures for team Flash. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode picks up six months after season 3. Cisco and Wally are suited up and are out in Central City going to take down Peekaboo, who just robbed a bank. Wally chases the criminal around the city. Iris is in STAR Labs looking at the situation. She directs Cisco to go to a building where Peekaboo is about to appear. Cisco traps Peekaboo and Wally knocks her down. The three roll over onto the ground where Joe and police show up to apprehend Peekaboo. Cisco, Wally, and Joe go back to STAR Labs. Iris tells the team that Peekaboo is one of the very few victories that the team has had since Barry went into the speed force. Cisco says the Iris
"I think we would be a lot better off if we weren't one man down."

At the West's house, Joe, Cecile, and Iris are having dinner.Joe tells Iris that since Julian went back to London they need more staff in the crime lab, and Joe can't hold up the lie of Barry is on holiday forever. Iris says that they should replace Barry because she believes that he is not coming back. Joe suggests to Iris that they need to have a service for Barry, to have permission to grieve. Iris doesn't like that idea and leaves to her apartment. Back at her apartment, Iris hears a loud crashing sound. She looks outside and calls Cisco and Wally to tell them to suit up.

'Vibing' their way there, Wally, Cisco and Joe to the middle of a street where they are confronted by a Samurai. Wally speaks Japanese to the Samurai, offering peace, but the Samurai aks for the Flash, or else Central City will fall. Cisco tells the Samurai to put the sword down. The Samurai puts the sword to the ground which releases an energy blast, throwing everything away; then the Samurai leaves waiting for the Flash. Back at STAR Labs, the team is assembled watching the news of the Samurai. Cisco says he wants to fight the best, he wants the Flash. Iris says that they have to do something as Barry is not here. but Cisco replies "what if he was, we need to bring Barry back," the rest of the team says what about the speed force tearing a hole in the Earth. Cisco says that he has a plan, something he started creating the night Barry left.

Cisco goes to a bar where Caitlin is working. He asks her for help to bring Barry back, which she accepts. The next day Iris goes to STAR Labs and no one is around. She uses GPS to find the STAR Labs van. At the location of the van Cisco, Caitlin, Joe, and Wally are at the runway Barry first tested his powers. Cisco uses a reconfigured the speed force bazooka to open a hole in the speed force where a red ball would go which would replace Barry as it gives off the same energy as Barry. Cisco powers up the Bazooka, a hole starts to form in the air, but then the system fails and Iris shows up.

In the middle of Central City, a hole from the speed force appears and the red streak, Barry Allen himself runs out and goes crazy around the streets but runs into a truck and gets knocked out. Team Flash is called into the police station where Cecile found him. Barry has a beard and is writing a series of weird symbols on the wall. Team Flash tries to talk to Barry but his mind is scrambled, he is talking about things from the past, such as the night his mother died, and he mentions stars melting. Caitlin injects a chemical into Barry so the team can bring him to STAR Labs.

Back at Star Labs, the team discovers that Barry is all fine in his health. The team thinks that Barry is trying to communicate with the team, but his words are scrambled, or he has dementia because he was in the speed force for lifetimes in his perspective. Cisco and Caitlin try to wake Barry up with some familiar surroundings. Iris talks to Barry who is drawing more symbols but Barry goes crazy and runs around the Lab leaving a mess. Caitlin uses a Captain Cold gun to stop Barry.

The team locks Barry up in a metahuman cell.

The Samurai is spotted in Central City, still wanting the Flash. Wally suits up as the Flash in Barry's suit and faces off against the Samurai. Wally get's his ass handed to him and gets stabbed right through his leg. Back at STAR Labs, Wally is in recovery. Cisco starts running some test of the symbols he drew and he manages to get "This house is bitchin".Down in the pipeline, Joe shaves off Barry's beard to make him feel more like himself. Iris comes down and has a heart to heart conversation with her dad. She goes over to Barry and says "come get me."

In the streets of Central City the Samurai shows up and the police confront him. Iris shows up and offers herself to the Samurai and she believes the Flash will come for her. So the Samurai takes Iris and leaves. Back at STAR Labs Joe asks Barry for help. Barry freezes for a bit and runs off breaking out of the cell taking the new suit Cisco made for him. Barry chases the Samurai out of the city and into a field of wind turbines. The Samurai knocks down some turbines which the Flash runs up and catches Iris and destroys the Samurai. Barry walks over to the Samurai and finds that it was a robot. Barry and Iris reunite and kiss in the field.

Back at STAR Labs, Barry is fine and he does not remember any of the gibberish stuff he said or wrote. The only thing he remembers was going into the speed force and then saving Iris. The team reunites and they go home. Caitlin goes back to the bar she was working at before, she says that she wants to quit but a guy there tries to stop her. Caitlin turns Killer Frost and gets out of the bar after threatening people. Outside Killer Frost goes away and Caitlin fades in being a bad thing for both personas. Back at Barry and Iris' apartment, the couple reunites after six months, but then Barry has to leave and fight crime.

The episode ends with a lady looking at a screen which has the headline "The Flash Returns" she says the Samuroid served its purpose as the Flash is back a mysterious voice in a chair says "it appears things are going as planned." the lady asks "what's our next step" and the man in the chair replies "I'm thinking." So to explain that the lady is the mechanic played by Kim Englebrecht and the man in the chair is the Thinker, the main villain of the season, being played by Neil Sandilands. If I had to guess the Thinker wants the Flash for his speed force knowledge. We will see how that plays, but it is crazy that the main villain is revealed in the first episode of the season, especially compared to last year.

The standout scene in the episode was the end fight between the Samuroid and the Flash. The CG seemed to improve more in the show, which is a good thing. I loved that scene where Barry is holding Iris and he runs through the blades of the moving wind turbines.

Grant Gustin did a great job as Barry Allen in the episode. With the material given to him of portraying a messed up Barry, he did a relatively good job. But I am excited to see how the show handles the character to bring him back to the way he was in season one. Carlos Valdes did a great job as Cisco in the episode. He held the episode together with the charm the character brings. The rest of the cast was great, we had Candice Patton (Iris West), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West) and Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West). It seems like from this episode that Keiynan works better in the lighter tone of the show; there was a great improvement of his acting in this episode.

The premiere brought the return of Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow. I am happy the Danielle is on the show. But I am very confused as to how her Killer Frost persona works. It appears as though this can happen in any given instant that Caitlin is under pressure. I see how she returned to full Caitlin at the beginning of the episode because she was away from all the stress of team Flash, and how she went to Killer Frost at the end of the episode, but it didn't last too long. So there is not too much at stake if she goes full Killer Frost because if you leave her alone, she should return to being Caitlin.

Overall this episode for the Flash was really awesome. I enjoyed the idea of the rebirth of Barry as the Flash, redesigning the show to go back to the season one routes. I will give this episode of the Flash a 9 out of 10. I am excited to see where the season will go next, in terms of tone and character development. The Legends of Tomorrow review will come out tomorrow morning, so subscribe to get that. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
