SUPERGIRL 'GIRL OF STEEL' REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 1:

Supergirl season 3 premiered with a bunch of new stories waiting to be told. So spoilers ahead for the premiere of season 3 of Supergirl, and also if you haven't seen the finale of Season 2, you should probably watch that, as well. But let's recap.

The episode opens with a dream sequence. Kara is in a grass field with Mon. Kara sees her mother in the field. Suprised to see her, Kara gives her mother a hug. Kara then wakes up and finds herself suited up as Supergirl hovering above National City. She hears that there is a truck chase happening, which Alex and Maggie are involved in. Kara goes to help the police on their mission. Supergirl lands on the roof of a truck which the police are chasing. She stops a criminal from firing a machine gun at the police and throws him aside. She then proceeds to take down another criminal with an electric based weapon. Kara succeeds in stopping the truck and she flies away.

Back at the DEO headquarters, the team claims that they had a win, but Kara is still depressed about loosing Mon from last season. But the team learns that a criminal, Bloodsport got away. Meanwhile, there is a board meeting going on led by millionaire, Morgan Edge who wants to build housing on the waterfront where a statue is being built. Lena Luthor is at the meeting and puts her foot down as he would be making poor people homeless. Jimmy is also at the meeting and Morgan Edge says that CatCo is biased and that he might have to buy CatCo. Back at CatCo Jimmy wants Kara to write a story on Morgan, even though Kara is lacking at work.

Kara goes to visit Lena who we learn has been trying to get through to Kara but she keeps blowing Lena off. Meanwhile, there is robbery going which Kara goes to stop. We learn that there is a cloaking device on a ship that attacks Supergirl. She manages to take it down, but the criminal behind it, Bloodsport gets away again. Kara is about to go after her but she gets an emergency signal from Jimmy Olsen at CatCo. Jimmy asks if she is okay because she hasn't been working, but Kara is pissed at Jimmy for using the emergency signal, so she decides to quit her job.

Back at the DEO, Winn learns that Bloddspot stole a bunch of technology that can be used to cloak a ship; even Supergirl's x-ray vision would not be able to see what is coming. Meanwhile, we learn Morgan Edge is working with Bloodsport. Back at Kara's apartment, she is visited by Alex. Kara says she wants to ditch her humanity and only become Supergirl. Alex goes on to say that Kara Danvers is more of a hero to her than Supergirl is.

Suspecting something is going to go wrong at the new Supergirl statue unveiling at the waterfront, the team hangs out there. Supergirl and J'onn are on a rooftop. J'onn tells Supergirl that Kara told him that his losses made him stronger. On the ground, Alex and Maggie are looking for any suspicious activity. A girl bumps into Alex and the girl's mother, Samantha makes her apologize. A missile hits and ht ground shakes at the waterfront, but nothing is seen, only the tremor. Supergirl realizes that the missile hit was from underwater, so she swims into the surrounding water where she finds a submarine. Supergirl gets hit by a missile goes unconscious in the water. She has a dream where Mon tells her to wake up, so she does. Supergirl lifts the submarine out of the water and stops the criminals.

Later on, Kara meets Lena, who tells Kara she bought CatCo so Morgan Edge wouldn't. Kara tells Lena that she quit her job. Morgan Edge is pissed off at Lena for buying out CatCo, but Kara does a quick change into Supergirl where picks him up and drops him on a boat. She tells him that she knows that he was behind the missile attack at the waterfront. Supergirl flies away leaving Morgan stranded. When Supergirl flies away we see that there is a small alien ship underwater.

Back at the DEO Alex asks J'onn to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. Back at Kara's apartment, Kara texts Lena that she will come into work as Lena is technically her new boss. The episode ends with another dream sequence. We see Kara's mother, but she is a monster. Then we see Smanatha, the woman at the waterfront, wake up.

Let's talk about Samantha, or her real name, Reign. She is being played by Odette Anable. She was the lady with the kid (who bumped into Alex) at the waterfront. In the episode, the kid gets stuck in some metal, and Reign uses her powers to lift up the piece save her daughter.
We know that Reign is the main villain for the season on the show. But there are so many questions left unanswered; such as does she know she is an alien. Becuase she seemed kind of surprised when she could lift the metal in the episode. Maybe she has some clue but doesn't know fully. It will be very interesting to see how she unfolds at being the villain of the season, and especially with the end scene. Maybe she realizes that Kara's mother did something bad to her and now she wants revenge, thus being a villain.

Melissa Benoist really bought a great range of acting in the episode. From the darker depressed Kara to the slightly more improved version of her at the very end of the episode. I love the direction that they took the character in this premiere, so effects of last season have really beaten her down to a point where she thinks what's the point of being Kara Danvers? because she realizes that she is not human, she shouldn't have emotional attachments to people because it hurts her is she loses them such as Mon. It was interesting to say that most humans would drink off the pain of a lose, where Kara as a Kryptonian is trying to distract herself by saving people, to distract herself from the loss on Mon. We usually see the character in a lighter mood, but the darker mood such as this shows how attached she got to Mon-El and how she is dealing with his loss, by ultimately burying Kara Danvers.

I hope that Supergirl season 3 doesn't turn out to be like the Flash season 3. That being super dark for the show, and not in a good way. In a way that drifts away from the core aspects of the show, and what made the good parts of the show good. I don't think it will. The show will hopefully 'get over' the loss of Mon and how it affects Kara relatively early in the season. The show needs to get to those lighter tone routes, such as the end of season one, a beginning of season two.

The supporting cast of the episode was great. Chyler Leigh was great as Alex, and how her character wants Kara back because she is more of a hero to Alex than Supergirl ever has. But credit to the rest of the cast for bringing great performances, we head, David Harewood (Martian Manhunter), Jeremy Joran (Winn Schott), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), Mechad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Florina Lima (Maggie Sawyer), David St. Louis (Bloodsport), Adrian Pasdar (Morgan Edge) and Chris Wood (Mon-El).

We also had the debut of the new actor portraying Supergirl's mother, Erica Durance; who played Lois Lane on Smallville is now on Supergirl playing Alura Zor-El. It is cool seeing the Smallville crossover onto the new shows. But I hope she comes back. It seems like this season Kara will have small dreams which will involve her mother and Mon. Almost is the way Arrow had flashbacks, but these dreams may not heavily influence the story, but Kara's actions.

Anyway, that does it for this review for Supergirl, sorry this is out a little later; that is due to the new Star Wars trailer. But all the CW DCTV shows are back this week, with the Flash and Legends of Tomorrow coming out tomorrow, and Arrow on Thursday. I would like to hear your thoughts on the Season 3 premiere of Supergirl? like what were your favorite scenes? As always thanks for reading, take care.
