LEGENDS OF TOMORROW 'ZARI' REVIEW
Season 3 Episode 3:
Legends of Tomorrow is back with a new episode introducing the newest member of the show, Zari. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.
The episode opens in 2042, with an Argus van transporting a prisoner in the back. Kuassa infiltrates the van with her water powers and kills the drivers of the van. Kuassa goes to see the prisoner in the back, but she managed to escape. Witnessing this situation is Tim Bureau agent, Gary who contacts the Time Berua of the incident.
On the Waverider, Amaya is sleepwalking with her powers, which Nate and Martin try to stop. Sara intercepts the call that Gary made to the Time Bureau, so wanting to prove themselves, Sara gets a new mission. Sara, Mick, Ray, and Jax go to 2024 where everything is desolate. the four find Gary who is hiding; he tells the Legends about Kuassa. Back on the Waverider, the Legends speculate that Kuassa is after the prisoner in the Argus van. The Legends discover that the prisoner is Zari Tomaz, so they set out to protect her.
Ray, Sara, Mick, and Nate find Zari in a building where they warn her about someone who is after her. Zari ignores the Legends and tells them that there was an anti metahuman act. An Argus drone shows up trying to apprehend the Legends, but Zari manages to hide her face from the drone and leaves. Ray destroys the drone but then the Legends are surrounded by Argus soldiers. The Legends kick the ass of the Argus soldiers, and they manage to escape.
On the Waverider, the Legends search up Zari and find that she has broken several laws. The Legends go to a bar to track Zari a second time and Mick talks her into staying with the Legends. Kuassa shows up to the bar, which Sara fights her. Knowing that they can not fight her, the Legends bring Zari on the Waverider and run away. On the Waverider, Zari tells the Legends that they keep her on the Waverider in exchange for them to break her brother out of prison, the Legends agree to do so. Meanwhile, Nate suggests to Amaya that they reconstruct a water found in Zambesi (which gives people visions) which might save Amaya from losing control of her amulet.
Zari, Sara, Ray, Jax, and Mick go to the Argus prison where Zari's brother is being held. Ray and Jax go to unlock the cell which is housing Zari's brother; however, the two see that Argus is experimenting on Metahumans, which they are disgusted by. So Jax does the brave move and unlocks all the cells of the prison. All the prisoners get released and Zari runs off. We see Zari go to a box which holds an amulet which she takes. Zari meets up with the Legends who discover that there was no brother. Zari taps her amulet and flies off. Ray chases her in his suit while Jax, Sara, and Mick leave.
While that was happening, Nate and Amaya drank some Zambesi vision water. Amaya goes into a sleep while Nate reacts to the water like he took some drugs. Nate flies the ship to the prison to pick up his team. Sara, Jax, and Mick get on the Waverider, and Sara asks Jax why he let out all the prisoners, which Jax tells her what he saw. Meanwhile, Amaya has a vision, and in her vision, she is in a jungle. She searches around and finds one of her ancestors who tells her that her amulet is getting stronger to get ready to fight stronger threats. The ancestor tells Amaya that she needs to run alongside her amulet to take control of it.
Zari finally lands in a brunt down campsite. Ray lands beside her and Zari tells Ray that her parents were supposed to meet her here. Zari goes on to say that her brother held the amulet which made him a metahuman, so Argus killed him and locked up her and her parents. Kuassa appears from the water ready to fight Ray and Zari.
On the Waverider, the Legends are greeted by a large Time Bureau ship controlled by Ava Sharpe. The Legends fins out that Gary leaked their location and he quickly teleports to the ship. The Waverider gets hit by the Time Bureau, so the Waverider jumps out of time. The Time Bureau ship follows the Waverider. Sara uses her piloting skills to escape the Time Burea and travel to 2042 to help Ray and Zari.
Kuassa uses her water powers to fight Ray and Zari who both try to stop her. Zari uses her wind bender powers but is rendered useless against Kuassa. Jax, Mick, and Amaya show up to stop Kuassa. Amaya steps forward to try talk sense into Kuassa; who gets tossed aside by Amaya's newfound control of her amulet. With Kuassa on the ground, Amaya approaches her, and Kuassa says "If I kill you, I will only be killing myself." Kuassa then taps a stone and teleports away.
On the Waverider Sara has a talk with Ava over a face call, and Amaya has control of her powers. The Legends drop Zari to a garage, Mick says goodbye to her, and then Amaya tells Zari that her amulet has great strength and people will be after it, so it is best for her to stay with the Legends. Zari doesn't argue and agrees to go.
The episode ends with Ray Palmer in 1988, hiding away from bullies as a kid. He finds himself in a tunnel and discovers a creature hiding in the tunnel with him.
Initial thoughts on the episode; the introduction of the new charcter Zari was great. She was vaguely similar to the comics but differnt. In the comics you may know Zari Tomaz under another name; she was married to Black Adam in the comics who set her free as a slave. In the comics, she did have a brother who also was a slave. So the tv show stuck with a similar origin story, but instead of being slaves in the psat, she is a prisoner in the future. It was a great change to the comics, otherwise having the woman with the amulet from the past would be too similar to Vixen, and the future setting can avoid the mention of Black Addam. So far I am pleased with the character on the show.
The post-credit scene of the episode was a teaser for next weeks episode where young Ray finds an E.T type character, which kills him. So the Legends have to stop that. The episode is basically a Halloween special and its set in the 80's. I am looking forward to that, and the title is "phone home" a quote from E.T so there will be plenty of 80's references next week.
Of course, Tala Ashe was great as Zari Tomaz. She was great at playing the character, and I am looking forward to seeing the character in the rest of the season. The rest of the cast was great in the episode, we had Caity Lotz (Sara/ White Canary), Brandon Routh (ray/the Atom), Franz Durham (Jax/ Firestorm), Victor Garber (Martin/ Firestorm), Dominic Purcell (Mick/Heatwave), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya/Vixen), Nick Zano (Nate/ Citizen Steel), Tracy Ifeachor (Kuassa), Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe), and Adam Tsekhman (Gary).
Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was a good one. I enjoyed the introduction of the new character Zari and how she will play into the rest of the season. I will give 'Zari' an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode, like what was your favorite scene? please let me know down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
