THE FLASH "GODSPEED" REVIEW
Season 5 Episode 18:
Hey everyone, after a hiatus the Flash is back with an episode, directed by Danielle Panabaker, picking up right where we left on the last episode, as we see Nora's origin story, her relations with the Reverse Flash, and the introduction of God Speed. So spoilers ahead for the episode.
Recap:
The episode opens up Nora in a meta-human cell and the rest of the team debates on whether or not they can trust Nora. Barry tells Ralph to read Nora's journal, as the team does.
We cut to 2049, where we see Nora is a CSI, and with no powers, she runs to a crime scene to find that chemicals were stolen by an individual, who is later discovered to be a speedster with white lightning. Nora goes to the Flash museum to find that there have been no sightings of white lightning. Nora decides to go to Iron Heights prison, to visit Eobard Thawne, A.K.A the Reverse Flash. Nora asks Eobard how to take down a speedster, and he doesn't give her an answer.
Nora goes with her friend Lia go to a chemical manufacturer to get some answers on what the new speedster is up to. The new speedster shows up and says that he is the "God of speed" as he hits Nora with a lightning bolt, blowing her into a shelf of chemicals. In the hospital, Lia tells Nora that she called Iris and that an old STAR Labs chip was found in her shoulder. Nora gets up and discovers that she has super speed. Nora tests her speed with her friend Lia, as she tests her speed on some robbers, however, fails. After more investigating, Nora sees that there is Godspeed is creating the Velocity-9 formula to make his speed permanent. Nora and Lia go to a lab to get the missing chemical that Godspeed needs to create Velocity-9. Nora is taken down by Godspeed, as he kills Lia.
Nora visits Iris and confronts her about her speed, and realizes that everyone has lied to her for her entire life. Determined to take down Godspeed, Nora visits Eobard, who is eating his last meal before his execution, as he sees that she has super speed. Eobard offers to help Nora through his last remaining calls. With Eobard in her ear, Nora goes to a lab to steal a stone which is needed to create permanent Velocity-9. Godspeed chases Nora, as Eobard tells her to phase through a wall, however, she can't. Nora instead runs up the Central City Citizen building and stops Godspeed with satellite interference, leaving him in police custody.
Nora visits Eobard to thank him, as he asks Nora how much she "knows about the Flash?" This leads Nora to go to the Flash museum (STAR Labs) and finds the brail room where she is greeted by Gideon, who plays Nora Barry's last message that he left for Nora in 2024, revealing to Nora that her father is the Flash.
Back in 2019, Iris takes Nora out of her cell. Barry has a separate talk with Nora as he asks her how many times she saw Eobard. Upset that she kept going back, Barry takes Nora to the future, 2049, and leaves her there, because he can't trust her. Barry goes to Iron Heights and confronts Eobard in his cell, before heading back to 2019.
Review:
The highlight of this episode, was Godspeed, as evident by the title of the episode. Godspeed is a character that nearly everyone has wanted to see on the show, and I feel like this episode was a good first episode to introduce the character and what he may feel like in the show. Although he was played as a one-off villain in the episode, I am sure that he will return a number of times, and may even possibly become a big-bad of a season one day, which would be great to see.
I think with the show casting August Heart already, the show is setting up his eventual return in a bigger way next time.
The suit of the character oddly looked like it was CG, but in reality, it was an actual practical suit. It was exciting to see the suit on screen, and it looked very unique compared to every other speedster suit we have seen before.
The setting of 2049 was really weird to see. I feel like the episode played the future setting as something which could be seen as realistic in some aspects, however unrealistic in other aspects. In the episode, I did like the hologram gauntlets that everyone did have. Although it wouldn't be something that we would see in thirty years, I did like the concept, especially in a universe where a man can shrink down to a few centimeters.
The police cars were something which did annoy me in the episode, as they felt a looked a little cheap, and also something that clean fueled cars would look like.
Nora in the episode was a clear parallel of Barry in the first season of the Flash. It was interesting seeing that Nora subconsciously became her father. It was a little weird in some places, especially with her running into the laundry van when she discovers that she has super speed for the first time. I know that the show wanted to get the audience to remember back and reminisce of the first season (arguably the best season). I do think that that the writers did just try to use the illusion of nostalgia to progress the character or Nora, which I guess was okay. I do like the character of Nora and her back story that we did see in the episode. This was seen in the form of Lia's death and Nora realizing that everyone has lied to her. I did love that scene where Nora confronted Iris and how she sped right up to her face. It was an awesome shot and very in line with the character and her arc in the season.
In terms of going forward, it seems like Nora will go back to the Reverse Flash one more time to learn how to time travel back in the past to 2019 for one last time, to try to make amends with what is happening. It is also possible that things get so dire in the present with the new Cicada that the team does get Nora back, and they change the timeline.
The cast of the episode was great. I do have to say that the highlight was everyone who was involved with Godspeed. We had BD Wong as the voice of the character, and Kindall Charters was pretty cool was Godspeed out of the suit, for the limited scenes we saw of him.
Jessica Kennedy Parker was also great in the episode, and someone who held the episode together in presenting the character arch of Nora where we saw her before any events in the present day, and how the events which lead her to her realization that she has speed, and her father was the Flash panned out.
The rest of the cast in the episode was great, even though we didn't see much of them. Starring in the episode was Jessica Kennedy Parker (Nora West-Allen/ XS), Tom Cavanaugh (Eobard Thawne/ Sherloque Wells), Kathryn Gallagher (Lia), Kindall Charters (August Heart/ Godspeed), BD Wong (Godspeed [voice]), Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ The Flash), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramone/ Vibe), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost).
In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was a highlight of the season. It explored the character of Nora, and her past all the while introducing Godspeed who seems like he was set up for more appearances. I did like the parallels to season one, however, the episode could have put more effort into developing Nora as a character as her own individual.
Rating: 9/10
