THE FLASH 'FAILURE IS AN ORPHAN" REVIEW

Season 5 Episode 16:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of the Flash, directed by Viet Nguyen, where we see the final showdown between team Flash and Orlin Dwyer, Cicada, as Nora tells them according to the future, and her connections with Eobard Thawne. So spoilers ahead, let's recap the episode.

Back in 2049, Nora visits Eobard where he tells her that there is something breaking through and trying to manipulate the timeline, as Nora sees that the time for Barry to defeat Cicada is coming soon.

In 2019, a new Meta-human, Acid Master, emerges as he soaks up some chemicals and runs away from Barry and Nora, leaving a trail of acid in his path. Back at STAR Labs, Nora recognizes the acid from a future newspaper where Barry and Cicada were last seen fighting, so she starts a mass investigation on how to track, stop, and talk to Cicada to get him to take the Meta-human cure.
Joe and Cecile go to question Dr. Ambres to see her relationship with Orlin, but then they walk into each other's differences and stop. Having of caught the Acid Master, Killer Frost disguises as him, and Cicada confronts her, as she freezes the dagger.  Barry confronts Cicada and tells him about his legacy, however, he doesn't care, and flees.

Joe and Barry have a talk at the police station, and they come to a solution to each others problems. Joe apologizes to Cecile as they go back to interrogate Dr. Ambres, where they find out that she has been in contact with Orlin, and that Grace is also a Meta-human. Barry goes to confront Orlin once again, revealing his identity. Barry tells Orlin that Grace is a Meta-human, and his actions will create a world of fear for her. Orlin agrees to take the cure, and for Grace to take it too, however, he wants Dr. Ambres to do it.

At STAR Labs, the team gets Dr. Ambres to help Caitlin and Cisco to inset the Meta-cure into Orlin, and they also need to stitch up his wound. The three successfully insert the cure and start to stitch up Orlin's chest wound. Sherloque then has a small confrontation with Nora, as they are joined by Cecile. STAR Labs has a blackout and the three are attacked by Cicada, as Nora and Cecile are pinned against the wall, Sherloque hits an emergency signal. The rest of the team finds out. Caitlin freezes Orlin's wound, while Ambres tries to rescue Orlin out of the labs. Joe, Iris, Barry, Caitlin, and Cisco confront this new Cicada as they fire everything that they have. Cicada takes down the team and goes after Ambres. Cicada takes the dagger from Ambres, killing her, as they take away Orlin.

The team gets back together, and realize that Ambres was killed, and they have no idea who the new Cicada is. The episode ends with the new Cicada taking off her mask next to Orlin revealing that she is an adult Grace.

Overall, this episode of the Flash was an interesting way to get into what might wind up being the next big bad of the season. So this episode felt like it was leading up to a final confrontation with Cicada. There wasn't anything to say otherwise. It's not like Orlin was becoming more powerful, while team Flash was getting closer and closer the Meta-cure being used on a widespread basis.

The Cicada twist in the episode was something that actually caught me off guard. I did speculate back in the episode 512 review, that the Cicada-like figure in Grace's mind was her future self And it appears that it is indeed true. The Grace Cicada was an interesting twist, and the powers that the character has is a departure of her uncle's powers, however, reminiscent of his powers. In terms of how Grace is older now, she obviously time traveled one way or another. I am guessing that Eobard is making a larger play, and sent Grace back in time, possibly to help stop Cicada in any time period once and for all.

I have to say, potentially my favorite scenes in the episode was team Flash throwing everything that they had at the new Cicada. Seeing Barry, Joe, Iris, Killer Frost, and Cisco line up was awesome. It was a well-shot scene with some great captivating cinematography and had amazing CG which created for some exciting action. The weapons that Cicada pulled out was interesting and played with some expectations, especially, the boomerang. The way that Cicada countered everyone was well orchestrated, and Cicada did mess up the main room in STAR Labs pretty badly.

One of the things which were interesting to see in the episode was the immanent idea that Nora has to go 'back to the future'. It was a small little plot to fill in the time, and it created for some great emotional scenes where we remember that Nora's main reason for coming back in time was to see her parents, ever since their wedding- that also does beg the question of where was she on Crisis on Earth-X.
I am guessing that Nora could potentially stay in season six. It does seem like her and Eobard's plan to save Barry will come to a head in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover later this year, however, they might take a back seat behind the Arrow characters, since that crossover will wrap up the whole Arrow series.

The cast of the episode was great in this episode, everyone played their roles well, and all bought interesting aspects to the story of the episode. Starring in the episode we had Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ The Flash), Jessica Kennedy Parker (Nora West-Allen/ XS), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West),  Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramone/ Vibe), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost), Tom Cavanaugh (Sherloque Wells), John Gillich (Acid Master), Lossen Chambers (Dr. Ambres), Chris Klein (Orlin Dwyer/ Cicada), and Sarah Carter (Grace Gibbons/ Cicada).

In conclusion, this episode of the Flash was an exciting one with the twist that it played in revealing the new Cicada from the future. The plot of the episode itself in attempting to cure Cicada was interesting and played into the character of Barry Allen in a neat way. I will give this episode an 8.5 out of 10.
