WAR MACHINE'S ENDGAME
Don Cheadle has played James Rhode/ War Machine for nine years, and he is back for Avengers Endgame, playing a kind of pivotal role in the film. So spoilers ahead for Avengers Endgame, let’s take a look at the character throughout the film, and his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Recap of War Machine in Endgame
Five years after the Avengers confronted Thanos learning that the stones are gone, and Thor killed Thanos, James is off being War Machine stopping threats. When Bruce and Scott develop the Quantum Realm time travel, James goes with Nebula to Morag in 2014 to secure the Power stone. James knocks out 2014 Star-Lord, and takes the Power Stone, and goes back to 2023, however, Nebula is captured by 2014 Thanos and is replaced by evil 2014 Nebula.

With the stones all secured, Bruce brings back half of all life in the universe before 2014 Thanos destroys the Avengers compound. James rescues Rocket from the ruble before suiting up in a new armor and joining the fight against Thanos. When Tony snaps with the stone, James is the first one to find Tony and help lay him down, as he watches his friend die.
At Tony’s funeral, James is one of the few people who watch Tony’s recording for Morgan, and that’s the last we see of James.

Review of War Machine in Endgame
In this film, Rhode had something to achieve by himself, and not be in the shadow of Iron Man. This was something that was great to see on screen, and I loved seeing James handle a mission on his own. We have only seen James operate by himself in passing stories, but in Endgame we saw that on his mission to secure the Power Stone. In that scene, James also references Indian Jones in believing that there were spikes in the walls where the Orb was being held.
I do have to say that I loved seeing Rocket and James together. It was awesome seeing those two together, and fighting alongside each other. I hope we see more of that in the future.
The news suit that James has in the final battle looked like a bulkier variant of the suit that we saw in the promo art, however, it carried over some of the Iron Patriot color scheme, with the metallic blue and red color scheme. It was rumored that James was going to get a War Machine Buster, which would be a Hulk Buster suit with the War Machine color scheme. I wish that we saw that in the film because that would have been awesome, but I guess that didn’t pan out.
The Future of War Machine
In the future of the MCU, I supposed we might see James get his own Disney Plus show. It has been rumored, but it has not been confirmed. I would love to see James hold his own show, and Cheadle would be great to see hold his own series, and bring the charisma of James to screen in his own light.

If he doesn’t get his own Disney Plus series, I would guess that he would be a part of the Avengers sequels in some capacity. Whoever assembles the Avengers in Avengers 5, whether that be Nick Fury, or Doctor Strange, or Captain Marvel, would most likely try recruit War Machine.
James could pop up in other films that are not the Avengers films, such as possible Ant-Man 3, or a Captain Marvel sequel.
I have to say that if James had to be in another film it would be in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3. In the comics, Iron Man joins the Guardians of the Galaxy team. Since Tony is dead, why not have War Machine join the team. James already has developed a friendship with both Rocket and Nebula, and since another Avengers such as Thor is joining the team, why not throw James on the team. I think he would be an interesting addition.
In conclusion, James Rhodes was a character that I thought would see his demise in the film, however, I am glad that he lived through and was a pivotal part of the illustration to show the impact of Tony’s death. The future of James seems interesting, and I would love to see what happens.
