ARROW "EMERALD ARCHER" REVIEW

Season 7 Episode 12:

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I last did an Arrow review, so what better time to jump back in than the 150th episode of the show, directed by Glen Winter, where they make a special documentary following Oliver Queen on an adventure as the Green Arrow. So spoilers ahead for the episode lets recap.

The episode is filmed partly as a documentary where Oliver has a film crew around him to document himself as a vigilante to break down the wall between him and the general public. The documentary features several past interviews from Quentin Lance, Thea Queen, and present interviews from Sara Lance, Sin, Ricardo Diaz, Rory Reagan, and Barry Allen, along with other various team Arrow members.

In the documentary we see Oliver Queen work with Dinah as a member of the Star City police force, where they find a knocked over Wilddog, who tells them that the new Green Arrow has been taken by a mysterious individual. At the police station, Oliver tells Dinah that the new Green Arrow is Emiko Queen, his half-sister. Meanwhile, William comes back from boarding school and is mad at Felicity, as he forms a friendship with Zoe, and tells her that he was expelled from his school.
Oliver, John, Dinah, and the documentary crew go out to a location where Emiko is being held. The person who captured Emiko is wearing an exo-suit, who escapes the vigilantes after a fight. The team finds Emiko and goes home. Curtis gives the exoskeleton the name of "Chimera".

John and Oliver go and find Chimera's workshop, where they find a collection of vigilante masks of Emiko, Wildog, Huntress, and Ragman. The two discover that Chimera is a vigilante hunter, and he will probably target Oliver next. Oliver has a meeting with mayor Pollard, where he is expecting Chimera to show up. Curtis, Rene, and John suit up as vigilantes once again and anticipate Chimera to attack. Cherima shows up and Oliver has a fight with him in costume. The other three join in and try to hold him down to power down the suit. Dinah uses her canary cry to help take down Chimera, revealing her identity.

With Chimera down, the police come in and apprehend John, Curtis, and Rene. At the police station, Dinah hands her badge into Pollard to resign because her friends were apprehended. Pollard tells Dinah and Oliver that they can keep working on the police force, and Curtis, Rene, and John, can also operate with the police. Oliver goes with his documentary crew to show them the ruins of the Arrow cave and tells them that he wants to rebuild it.
The episode ends in the future with a blonde girl and a grown-up Connor Hawke discovering the team arrow cave, saying that "vigilantes were the downfall of this city."

Overall, this episode of Arrow was such an awesome episode. I loved the concept of the documentary, it felt innovative in the way that it was structured, and for what it was aiming to achieve. There was a plot to go along with the documentary, that Oliver wanted to clear up what being a vigilante was like, which was great that there was a compelling effort placed into it.
I wouldn't have minded too much if the whole episode was filmed as a documentary, and we saw that team follow the Chimera in a documentary. The only problem with that is the warm color lens throughout the documentary camera's which could have been edited if that was going to be the whole episode.

One of the main highlights in the episode were the interviews. I did love the return of Ragman in this episode, albeit only for a little bit. I did wish we saw more of him in the episode. It also seems like his rags have been repaired in a way after he soaked up that nuclear bomb back in season five.
The Barry Allen interview was my favorite, just because of the way that character acted in the documentary scene, where he was kind of excited to be in it. I also did love the line "You think you know a guy." Grant Gustin's delivery on that line was great.

The actual plot of the episode was actually exciting, and there felt like somewhat of a real threat in the episode. I did like how the episode pushed the team to their limits, where they did assemble as a team once again, in costume, and fight Chimera. I also did like that Wilddog stayed in his original suit, rather than the one from last season because the original suit is better in my opinion. The ending with team Arrow joining the police force was an interesting 'twist' I guess. It is weird to see these vigilantes working with the police considering the dozens of laws they have broken.

The cast of the episode overall was great, I did love everyone in their interviews, it added something special to the whole episode. Starring in the episode we had Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen/ the Green Arrow), Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), David Ramsey (John Diggle/ Spartan), Echo Kellum (Curtis Holt/ Mr. Teriffic), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake/ Black Canary), Rick Gonzales (Rene Ramirez/ Wilddog), Sea Shimooka (Emiko Queen), Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance/ Black Siren), Jack Moore (William Queen), Eliza Faria (Zoe Rameriz), Lara Sadiq (Mayor Pollard), Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance), Willa Holland (Thea Queen), Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/ White Canary),  Kirk Acevedo (Ricardo Diaz), Joel Dinicol (Rory Reagan/ Ragman), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Sin), Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ the Flash), Joseph David Jones (Connor Hawke), Kathrine McNamara (Maya), and Jessica Heafey (Documentarian).

In conclusion, this episode of Arrow was an exciting and interesting way to make a special 150th episode of the show, simply by doing something different through the documentary format. I did like how it was executed, and wish we got more of it, as it was an interesting concept. I did enjoy the plot with Chimera and team Arrow assembling together at the end of the episode, creating for a memorable episode. I will give this episode an 8.5 out of 10.
