TITANS TRAILER BREAKDOWN

Hey everyone, the trailer for the new DC series on the DC Universe streaming service is here. That is right the trailer for the live action Teen Titans show, "Titans" is out and this trailer shows off the looks for Robin, Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy, as well as the tone of the show, and what we can expect to see from the story. So without further ado, let's break down this trailer.

The trailer starts off with Raven (Tenna Croft) going to seek out Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites). She first goes to his childhood place of work, a circus where he was a performer with his parents. In the trailer, we do see the flashback of Grayson's parent's death.
In the season, or the series or that matter, Raven is most likely the most pivotal character, with her father being Trigon, the ultimate villain who is going to be built up to. But the cult that follows him, that being the Chruch of Blood is most likely after Raven for some reason, and for help, Raven goes to Dick Grayson as we see in the trailer.

Here we see the meeting of Raven and Dick Grayson, AKA Robin. In the show, Dick will be retired from being Robin and will be working as a cop, as we see him here. In what city? Well, that's unclear. From behind the scene images, we know that the show is partly based in Gotham so Dick could be working at the GCPD when the show starts off.
In the trailer, we see Raven finally meet Dick, and she needs his help. The reason for him specifically helping Raven is unclear, but nevertheless, he seems to end up helping Raven kicking off his story in the season.

The first big action scene in the trailer, we see Dick suit up in the Robin suit to take down a group of criminals. In the scene, we get a sense of the reason that this is an R-rated show, as we see the blood splatter, and the bone-crunching in this scene. I want to say that the scene takes place in Gotham city, just because the criminals ask where Batman is, and where else would they expect Batman. I do like Dick's response, "F*ck Batman".

In the first season, we will see Dick in the Robin suit because that was the last suit he sported. And since it seems like Dick parted ways with Batman, from his dialogue, that he hasn't been with Bruce Wayne for a while, and never got a suit upgrade, to that Nightwing suit. I am guessing that by the season one finale, or in the season one finale we will see that Nightwing suit sported by Dick.

One of the core Titans members for the first season, Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) in behind the scenes images, Beast Boy only had green hair and no green body. It seems like a part of that is happening in the show, however, in this scene, we see full-on comic book Beast Boy.

I do like this look, it looks really awesome. I hope that he does transform into other animals like in the comics and cartoons, and he doesn't just have a Vixen type power where he only gets the abilities of an animal and that him going green represents that.
The shot shows Beasty jumping off a building into action. It is rumored that Beast Boy will not show up in the first episode. So the way that he will be included in the show and more specifically the team will be interesting.

It was said that Beast Boy will be the show's connection to the Doom Patrol, which is another team showing up in the show, in around episode five, and they will get their own spin-off series.

Here is one of the more controversial looking characters, Starfire (Anna Diop). In the show, the character seems like she will be new to Earth, and fall in with the Titans group relatively early in the season. The backstory with her on Tamaran might be addressed in the season, possibly saved for later.

But the look of Starfire is what everyone has been talking about. To start off, Anna Diop seems great for the role, it's just the way that the show went about bringing the character to life doesn't sit right at all. Everyone freaked out when the set pictures came out of Starfire. I stepped away from those thinking that in post-production that Starfire would have orange skin, but it seems like here, that was taken away. The idea of Starfire having the orange skin is to differentiate her from anyone else on the Earth, however, there is no feeling of any mystery of an alien with Starfire's look as she looks like someone who you wouldn't be surprised to see walking on any street.

The hair of the character is another criticism. Not so much the hair color, just the curly hair. Diop in every image I have seen of her, has had straight hair, like Starfire, but the curly hair, it's not something which affects the character, it just looks a little different from the expectations I had.
Here we see Starfire's powers in effect, and they don't look too great. It might just be the lighting in the scene, and everything just glows pink, including the hair. I am not too sure what is trying to be illustrated with the used of everything glowing pink, it looks a little odd.

One of the plus sides to Star fire is that she has green eyes, like the full eye is green, which is something I am glad that was added, as it is a defining feature of the character.

Not a member of the Titans team, however, an ally, in this shot we see Dove (Minka Kelly) in action. In the scene, she is taking down a group of criminals. In the show, Dove is going to be paired with her husband, Hawk (Alan Ritchson) like in the comics. This adaptation is very different from what is in the comics with the two characters, and the show will do something different with the characters.
In the show, I am not expecting the two to be in the Titans team, however, help the team out once in a while. Their involvement with the larger villain and plot is unclear, and the larger villain is still kind of unclear.

In the scene, I do like the look of the wings which Dove has. It reminds me of the metal wings Angle has in Apocolypse. The wings of Dove in the series are most likely going to be a suit modification, and not necessarily a gentic power, as a part of the show more grittier, grounded, take, which should be used in places it works and doesn't take away from major characters.

The last shot here is of Raven looking very demonic and like her comic book self, with the grey skin, and the mystical black swirls, and the screaming. This is a part of the darkness which Raven was talking about with Dick earlier in the trailer. This right here is the manifestation of her darkness, the Trigon within her. In the show, it seems like that the darkness is going to be Raven's inner conflict. This will most likely carry on until we get to Trigon in the show, who could be teased at the end of the first season.

Raven looking like this is a little creepy, and this is an awesome Super Saiyan type mode for the character. However, the normal everyday look of the character is also awesome, and that is a change I kind of like with the show, it gives more humanity to her. While this comic book look emphasizes the demonic side of the character, showing that it's going to go down.


In conclusion, the first trailer for Titans is interesting. The show is coming out on the DC Universe streaming service. The series is going to air one episode a week, for the thirteen episodes in season one. The show will start to air in the fall, which means around that around October we would potentially see the first episode. Outside of the United States, it is speculated that the show will come out on Netflix, week by week like on DC Universe. But that is all speculation.

Titans seems like an interesting take on the Teen Titans characters in live action form, which is exciting to see. There are changes to the character's appearance which do seem very odd and might take away from the show, however, I am willing to give it a shot, and things might change. I am looking forward to seeing Robin, Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy on screen together.
