OCEAN'S EIGHT REVIEW

The fourth installment in the Ocean's franchise, Ocean's Eight seems to be starting up a new trilogy, which will end at Ocean's 10, then there's Ocean's Eight through to thirteen. But nevertheless, we are here with the non-spoiler review of Ocean's Eight, directed by Gary Ross.

The film focuses on (Sandra Bullock) who along with her friend, Lou (Cate Blanchett) assembles a diversely skilled group of females to pull off a heist of a precious diamond necklace from the neck of trending model, Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway).

To start off, yeah, this will was a good film which used the narrative of a heist film and being an Ocean's film into the way it structured its story, and the visual techniques used to bring this film to life.

The plot of the film was a little simple, which was effective for the most part. There were a few scenes in the film where the plot does get a little shakey and there are a couple plot conveniences for the film to move forward which did annoy me a little bit and did take a little bit away from the film. There are a few plot twist in the film which did catch me off guard a little bit, and the idea of them was great, however, I feel like the film potentially could have been more exciting if some details of the plot were highlighted from the beginning, especially concerning the plot twist.

The visual techniques used in the film made this look like an Ocean's film, from the way scenes transitioned from one to another, and the camera zooms which were used to highlight details. The cinematography in the film was something to admire, as it was something I don't see very often so that change was appreciated. The music of the film was great and made added to the feeling of the heist film which was presented.

The pacing was an issue that I had with the film, th beginning did pick up a little slower than expected, the middle dragged out for too long, and then until it got to the actual end heist, I was a little bored. This film was an hour and 50 minutes. There really could have been about 20 minutes cut out of the film to make the film a little more intense and give the feeling of the heist film, and actually get to that a little faster.

Ocean's Eight uses the Ocean's franchise backing a lot, at times a little too on the nose. First of all the main character, Debbie is the sister of George Clooney's character from the franchise, Danny Ocean. That wasn't the problem for me, there were a couple things in the background which did feel too on the nose and it almost felt like they were added in to constantly tell the audience that this is an Ocean's film, and it almost acted liked like it needed these easter eggs because it felt like it couldn't stand on its own.

There was one major connection between this and Ocean's 11 (the Clooney remake not the 60's one) and that did surprise me and I absolutely loved it, that was a plot point which was probably on the nose the most, however, for me it worked, as it was used as a pivotal part of the plot, and yes, you will know what I am referring to if you have seen the film, and it was my favorite scene in the film.

The cast of the film was great. I do have to say that some of these characters were a little underdeveloped. Being the lead character, I would have liked to see more of Sandra Bullock in the film and dive a little deeper into her character to get a sense of emotion and potentially empathy for her character, the same with Cate Blanchett's character. The rest of the cast I would say was a little underdeveloped, but they serviced the plot of the film well.
Starring in the film we had Sandra Bullock (Debbie Ocean), Cate Blanchet (Lou), Helena Bonham Carter (Rose Well), Rhianna (Nine Ball), Mindy Kaling (Amita), Midori Francis (April), Sarah Paulson (Tammy), Anne Hathaway (Daphne Kluger), Richard Armitage (Claude Becker), James Corden (John Frazier), and Shaobo Qin (Yen).

In conclusion, Ocean's Eight was a good film which had a plot which was simple yet effective, and it had its fair share of twist, some of which landed, and some of which didn't. The film had its pacing issues and some other issues of desperately tieing this to the other films, when there was a good story with a great cast which worked well, however, could have been structured a little more. I will give Ocean's Eight a 7 out of 10.
