RIVERDALE "THE HILLS HAVE EYES" REVIEW

Chapter 27:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Riverdale to recap and review. This episode was different, it had a mixture of writing, as we see two plots develop, all in one storyline, which is out of two storylines in the episode, which both have two plots going. And if that was not enough two's for, you, well, let's just get on with the recap, and also, spoilers warning.

With Hiram doing some business deals in Riverdale, he sends Veronica, Archie, Betty, and Jughead to their lakeside house. Hiram tells Archie that an armed Andre will be monitoring them if they get into trouble. At school, Cheryl's hear of this plan and learns that she is not invited. At their location, the four teens go to the lake house, where Jughead gets a call from Cheryl where she tells Jughead that she saw Archie and Betty kiss in front of her house. Jughead freaks out about this for a little bit. Later at night, to get over the kiss, Veronica suggests that she and Jughead kiss, as to which they do, making everyone uncomfortable.

Jughead learns from a call from his father that Hiram bought out the serpent land, so no one is being evicted. Jughead confronts Veronica and tells her that her family is buying up Riverdale. Later on, Archie is cutting wood, when he walks off. Veronica sees him and follows him. She sees that he is talking to Andre and is upset that he hid from her that Andre is looking out for them. Veronica goes to a store with Betty, where Veronica sort of flirts with a guy. Meanwhile, in Riverdale, Josie discovers that her mother is having an affair with Sheriff Keller. Josie tells Kevin who gets upset at his father. Later night, with the latest Greg Berlanti movie "Love Simon" in Riverdale, Josie apologizes to Kevin for telling him about what is happening with their parents, as it was not her place. Kevin forgives her. Afer the film, at Pops Kevin sits down with Moose and Midge, while Cheryl comes out to Toni. Later on at Pops, Josei, Mayor McCoy, Kevin, and Sheriff Keller have a reconciliation.

Back at the lack side house, the four teens are playing Monopoly while drinking. Betty gets a call from her mother and learns that Hiram bought out their new paper business. Betty and Veronica get in a fight where Jughead also joins in. The four hear a noise and before they know it, hooded masked robbers are holding them up with an ax. On the ground, one of the robbers goes with Veronica to get her wallet. Veronica tells the robbers she recognized them from the store. Veronica presses a silent alarm and gives her wallet. Back with the others, the telephone rings and Veronica warns the robbers she triggered the silent alarm. The robbers take Veronica's necklace and leave. Archie chases after them. Andre shows up and stops the robber in the woods. Archie goes back to the house as directed as he hears a gunshot. Back home at Riverdale, Archie tells Hiram what happened as Hiram gives Archie Veronica's necklace. Jughead drops Betty at her house and tells her to be safe, as she may have let an "invasion" into her house.

Overall, this episode of Riverdale had highs and lows. In the episode, the main story focused on Betty, Jughead, Archie, and Veronica in the lake house. The first half of that story was really weird. Nearly all logic went out the window. I don't get why Veronica and Jughead kissed, it was rather uncomfortable and felt and there was no point of it, both of the characters were more or less over the fact that Archie and Betty kissed. In the other half of the episode in that story, we get to see the story escalate which would have been a much more exciting episode. We hear what is going on in Riverdale, and how the teens react to that. We learn that Hiram is buying out places, and it was great seeing the four get at each other, even though none of them were really involved. Not seeing the purchasing created for suspense, and you never knew what was going to happen next.

The side story of the episode also had the same flaws as the main story. We get a few references to the new film, "Love Simon", which is directed by Riverdale's executive producer, Greg Berlanti. At first, it was a subtle tease, but it felt like a shameless plug when we saw the characters actually watching the film in the theater. I feel as though the Cheryl story was a little tagged on in the episode. However, an interesting story which could have been stretched out was the affair between the Mayor and the Sheriff. I would have loved to explore the psychological impact that would have had on Josie and Kevin, but instead, we did not get to see that.

The cast of the episode we great as always. The acting on Riverdale is brilliant, it is just the writing of some of the characters that I do not enjoy too much. But starring in the episode we had Stephan Miers (Andre), KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones)Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz), Cassey Cott (Kevin Keller), Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy), Martin Cummins (Sheriff Keller, Rovin Givens (Mayor McCoy), Cody Kearsley (Moose Mason), Emilija Baranac (Midge Klump), Hart Denton (Chic Cooper), Skeet Ulrich (FP Jones), and  Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge).

In conclusion, this episode of Riverdale had some highs and lows in both the main story and side story. In the main story, we saw the escalation of the story towards the back half of the episode, which I wish happened a little earlier in the episode. The other plot of the episode could have been interesting however felt like a plugin. The director, David Katzenberg did a good job in blending the camera techniques with the story. I will give this episode of Riverdale a 7.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below.
