LEGENDS OF TOMORROW "NO COUNTRY FOR OLD DADS" REVIEW
Season 3 Episode 13:
Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Legends of Tomorrow, directed by Niet Nguyen, as we see Wally West on board the Waverider, however, we focus primarily on Ray, and the Darhk's picking up with Ray's capture by the two in last weeks episode. So spoilers ahead for this episode of Legends of Tomorrow, let's recap.
The episode opens up with Zari, Sara, and Ava, finding a video from Ray which has him saying that he was captured by Damien Darhk, and if they come looking for him, they will kill Ray. After finishing the recording on his phone, Nora complains about Vixen's spirit totem not working, and Kuassa complains that it belongs to her and her family. Damien then pulls out his fire totem and Kuassa points out that it is broken. Damien threatens the life of Ray's mother if he does not fix the fire totem for him. So transported to 2018, Damien, Nora, and Ray go to a lab where Ray gets's to work, after seeing Damien kill one of his former co-workers.
On the Waverider, Rip Hunter and Wally West teleport in using the Time Bureau watch. Wally is greeted by Nate, and then takes a pair of stolen glasses off Mick. Nate tells Wally that the glasses were a souvenir, so Wally hands them back to Mick. Amaya, Vixen, and Wally go to meditate to find the spirit amulet, thus leading to Ray. Before meditating, to go into the ancestral plane, Amaya asks Wally how he knows Nate, and Wally tells her that he helped him get over a breakup with a "basic bitch who dumped him on his birthday." Amaya tells Wally that she is the "basic bitch", and Wally super speeds away.
Meanwhile, Ray cannot fix the Fire Totem without cold fusion which does not exist a part of the Big Bang. Damien tells Ray that a scientist, Dr. Vogal, invented cold fusion in 1962, Berlin, but when Damien was an assassin, he killed Vogal. Nora and Ray go to 1962, to save Vogal from being killed by younger Damien. with the time stone broke, Nora, Ray, and Vogal, barely escape young Damien. In a warehouse, Ray talks Nora out of torturing Vogal, and they agree to take him home to his family across the Berlin wall, where he can give his daughter a doll, which then they will get the formula. Ray, Nora, and Vogal create fake passports and steal a car, and some clothes to disguise themselves. At the border, young Damien attempts to kill Vogal, creating havoc. Present day Damien shows up and saves Nora, Ray, and Vogal. In a house, Damien force chokes Ray, while having an argument with Nora, which ends with Nora walking out.
In the ancestral plane, Zari and Amaya see that everything is a barren wasteland, looking like the Mallus plane. Amaya finds her ancestor who tells all that is going on, as time is disrupted, the prison for Mallus, which is the ancestral plane, grows weaker and weaker, thus Mallus can escape. Amaya and Zari realize that Damien, Nora, Kuassa, and Grodd are disrupting time to let Mallus escape. The ancestor tells Amaya that the Totems are the key and that she must get her Totem back before it is consumed by darkness. The ancestor also adds to redeem Kuassa.
Nora gets captured by young Damien who calls up his present-day self to make a deal, Vogal for Nora. Damien masks himself and makes his decision to get back Nora. Left unintended, Ray uses his voice activation on his Atom suit to break himself free. On a rooftop, Damien gives his younger self Vogal, however, young Damien throws Nora off the edge. Using his powers Damien keeps Nora afloat while fighting his younger self. Pinned to the ground, Nora tells her father to let go of her, he does, and Nora unlocks the Spirit Totem and flies up. In the ancestral plane, Amaya's ancestor says that the darkness has consumed the Spirit Totem, and then she disappears. Nora and Damien fight young Damien. Ray shows up in his atom suit, saves Vogal, who gives Ray his daughter's doll, which is holding the cold fusion formula. Damien kills Vogal as Nora asks Ray for the formula. Ray blows a hole in the Berlin wall with his suit, alerting the Legends of an anachronism.
The Legends see the temporal zone crack apart, so they go to 1962, where Sara sends out Wally. Suited up, Wally runs through Berlin and saves Ray and brings him back to the Waverider. Nora and Damien teleport elsewhere. On the Waverider, Ray is greeted by his fellow friends and is surprised to see Rip. Wally gives Sara a souvenir he got from Damien, which is the Fire Totem. Amaya and Zari tell them about Damien's plan, breaking out Mallus. Ava calls her supervisor and sees him get killed by Grodd, leaving Ava the head of the Time Bureau. Rip and Ava head back to the Time Bureau, but not before Rip tells Gideon to erase his file on Ava. Wally is about to leave, but Sara offers him a place on the Waverider, as a Legend.
The episode ends with Damien telling Nora that he is proud of her and that he is sorry about this Mallus situation. Damien goes to get some cookies, however, Mallus starts and stops possessing Nora multiple times, leaving cracks on her face. Nora gets in control with the cracks still on her face and tells her father that everything is fine.
Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was a fun exciting and suspenseful episode. The main plot of the episode with Ray and the Darhk's kept me on the edge of my seat, because who knew if Ray would manage to fix the Fire Totem. The adventure that leads them with Vogal was great. It explored the personality of Ray, and how he can affect others for the better. From the impact of Ray, we saw how Nora and Damien increased their bond as daughter and father. The theme of a father figure in this storyline was one that shined out, we saw how Damien wanted to express his feelings for his daughter but struggled to, and he finds this regret in himself for what he has done to her. It plays great along with the lines of how Mallus is corrupting Nora, and how that could potentially stop that. One flaw there was in this storyline was the CG used in that Nora falling scene, it was very obvious and was a little distracting. Bu a fun thing in the episode was that the relationship between Ray and Nora was teased. The chemistry between the two was great, that is most likely because Brandon Routh who plays Ray is married to Courtney Ford who plays Nora. So I think that Nora and Ray might end up together at the end of the season if they both survive.
In this episode, we saw Keiynan Lonsdale as Kid Flash now becoming a full-blown Legend of Tomorrow. In the episode the character was introduced in a humorous way, leaving questionable impressions of the rest of the team. I did enjoy how half the team already is not too much of a fan of Wally, but it will be great to see that progress through the season. The character stealing the Fire Totem at the end there was really net tie-in, to the beginning of the episode where Wally learned about the petty stealing. But as promised, Wally is now a full-blown Legend. I am excited to see what the character will do on missions, and it is awesome that he is on the Waverider and not with Rip at the Time Bureau.
Neal McDonough was brilliant in the episode as Damien Darhk. With the way that he portrayed the character in a state where he saw a realization of his faults in the relationship with his daughter was well illustrated on screen. The young Damien was also awesome to see, something different, however, I did feel that the writing was a little too on the nose. But overall, great performances. I also have to add, Keiynna Lonsdale fits so perfectly with the full cast of this show. There were so many great moments and interactions with him and the other characters and they were fun to see on screen. The rest of the cast in the episode was great, starring in the episode we had Brandon Routh (Ray/ the Atom), Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk), Caity Lotz (Sara/ White Canary), Jes Macallan (Ava Sharpe), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya/ Vixen), Tala Ashe (Zari Tomaz), Dominic Purcell (Mick/ Heatwave), Nick Zano (Nate/ Steel), Amy Louise Pemberton (Gideon), , Adam Tsekhman (Agent Gary), and Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter).
Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was an awesome episode. With developing the story of Nora Darhk, Damien Darhk, and Ray, where got a sense of where the season is heading, however, we saw the delivery of a great story complemented by great acting. In this episode, we saw the introduction of Wally West as a Legends which was awesome to see on screen, and Niet Nguyen did a fabulous job in building that hype up. I will give this episode of Legends an 8.75 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts in the episode down in the comments below.
