LEGENDS OF TOMORROW "AMAZING GRACE" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 14:

Hey everyone, we are back with a new episode of Legends of Tomorrow where we see Wally West settle in the team, however not before the team finds the sixth and final Totem which is tied to the king of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley. Spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens up in 1954, Memphis, where we see a young undiscovered Elvis Presley go to a guitar shop where he purchases a special guitar which he felt call to him. On the Waverider, Wally cleans up the kitchen and moves into Zari's room, beating her Mrs. Packman scores. Meanwhile, Nate's hair changes style, as the team discovers that in 1954 Memphis turns to a ghost town with one survivor, Elvis Presley. To stop this anachronism, the Legends head to the 50's to examine what is going on. In church, the Legends hear Elvi's uncle, Lucious, who claims that Rock and Roll is the "music of the devil." Elvis plays a song on his new guitar for his church, as Nate and all the 50's ladies freak out. While playing, Zari's totem starts to react and makes her levitate. Outside, the Legends ask Zari what is going on and her Totem reacted because it was near another Totem. The Legends then learn that Elvi's guitar has a totem on it.

With a new guitar with no Totem, Nate and Amaya go to a bar to see Elvis play. Nate speaks to Elvis and swaps guitars. Elvis goes up to play, however, he has trouble playing, the guitar is out of tune, so Elvis sits down. Nate and Amaya talk to Elvis and Elvis tell the two that he felt like he had a connection with his guitar like he felt his passed twin brother, Jesse with him when he played. Nate tells Elvis that he could still play without the other Totem guitar. Nate tells Elvis that he will get his other guitar back. On the Waverider, Sara and Ray are attempting to sever the Death Totem from the guitar. The guitar becomes sentient, however, they learn that it is summoning the paranormal. Ghost pop out and start to attack Ray and Sara. Feeding his pet rat, Mick gets hit by the guitar, and Wally tries to catch it. The guitar goes crazy and flies across the Waverider. Nate calls the team and tells them that Elvi's passed twin, Jesse is controlling the guitar. Sara calls out "Jesse" and the guitar comes back to her. On the Waverdier, with information from Constantine, the Legends learn that Elvis' guitar holds the sixth and final Totem, the Death Stone.

Nate and Amaya visit Elvis in his first studio recording, there Nate gives Elvis his Death Totem guitar back where Elvis plays "I'm gone, Mama". Creating a hit, the producer gets the track instantly on record, however uncle Lucious comes in, takes the record, and gets Elvis, Nate, and Amaya locked up. In the jail cell, Nate calls Wally and Zari and to tell them to get the record from Lucious and get it played on the radio. In the cell, Nate has a talk with Elvis and tells him that he can do anything, with the guitar being a connection to Jesse or not, music can help him remember his brother. At the church, Wally has a talk with Lucious where he relates Elvis and Lucious' relationship with that of his own and Joe's. Wally gets the record and delivers it to the radio station. Zari turns up the radio in the church and Lucious hears the music of his nephew on the radio. In the police station, Elvis hears himself on the radio. Back at the church Wally and Zari see ghost incoming from the graveyard. At the police, station ghost come in, so Nate, Amaya, and Elvis are let free. Meanwhile, on the Waverider after Mick's pet rat, Axl is found dead, Ray holds a funeral for the beloved pet, however, it's spirit comes back, grows a couple feet and runs off.   At the church, Zari and Wally try to fight off the ghost Mrs. Packman style, however, their powers are of little to no use. Elvis, Nate, and Amaya go to the church where Elvis strums his guitar which puts a ghost to rest. In the church, Elvis plays "Amazing Grace", as the ghost come along and evaporate as they listen to the sweet tunes of Elvis. On the Waverider, Mick says one final goodbye to Axl, as he evaporates. Elvis looks behind and sees the ghost of Jesse. He tells him that he will see him later, as Jesse disappears. Everyone in the church dances to the music of Elvis. Later on, in the recording studio, Elvis gives Nate the Death Totem attached to the guitar, as Elvis gets back to his new life of Rock and Roll.
On the Waverider,  Nate has his full slicked up hair back; the team celebrates that they have four of the six Totems, as Ray places all the totems in lock boxes. Nate and Amaya bond over music, as the episode, ends with on the lightboxes jumping around.

Overall, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was a unique and creative one. To start off, the idea of young Elvis Presley was amazing. This may be one of the best historical figure guest appearances that have been on the show. That is because we saw an evolution of the character which tied into not only history as we know it today, however with the story of the show. We also saw the character in action, no fighting, but in what he is best at, music. It was an interesting way to have an end showdown, as it did not feel violent, however peaceful, in the way that the ghost went down. Speaking of the ghost, they looked awesome. At times the CG looked a little wonky, but overall, they looked great on screen, from the colors to the raw texture of the ghost, it was something new and interesting on the show which is great to see.

The episode had the side plot with Mick. That was a nice story, closing off a small plot that has been running since last season. Although the story had its comedic moments, the resolution to it was neat, and a great side arc for Mick, a character who has not had much screen time in the past couple episodes. Wally moving in was a fun little arc, and it seems like Zari is kind of his guide in all this Legends stuff. The Nate and Amaya story was well written as it flowed from the main story as a whole. We saw how their relationship developed through the use of Presley's music. The end scene where Elvis and Nate parted ways was well executed. We get a sense of Elvis' outlook on life, and how that inspired many people, and drafted the spirit of rock and roll. We also saw the Legends gain their fourth stone Totem, the death totem, which I did feel like the show could have extended for a while.

Luke Bilyk was awesome as a young Elvis Presley. The acting made the character of young Elvis interesting, especially as we dived into his love for music, rock and roll, and his connection with Jesse, his brother. The rest of the cast was, of course, great; starring in the episode we had Nick Zano (Nate/ Steel), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya/ Vixen), Geoffry Blake (Uncle Lucious), Tala Ashe (Zari Tomaz), Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally/ Kid Flash), Dominic Purcell (Mick/ Heatwave), Brandon Routh (Ray/ the Atom), Caity Lotz (Sara/ White Canary), and Amy Louise Pemberton (Gideon).

In conclusion, this episode of Legends of Tomorrow was a fun episode, as we saw the introduction of the Death Totem and young Elvis. The large plot with Elvis was interesting as it had mostly good CG, great acting, and great music. The episode was brought down with some sound effects, in the non-Elvis scenes which felt a little cheap to build suspense. I will give this episode an 8 out of 10.
