BLACK LIGHTNING "THREE SEVENS: THE BOOK OF THUNDER" REVIEW

Season 1 Episode 6:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Black Lightning directed by Benny Boom, and in this episode, we see a whole lot of development in the story and the characters, with both Black Lightning himself and Anissa, as Thunder. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens up at the police station where Inspector Henderson sees that an army of police soldiers are getting ready to capture Black Lightning as one of the police got a hit from Joey Toledo. Meanwhile, Jefferson knocked over from his fight with Toledo, and Gambi comes to take Jefferson away in his van. Calling over Lynn to check on Jefferson, Lynn freaks out and does not want anything to do with Jefferson being Black Lightning again. The next day at work, Lynn compares brain scans of Jefferson to ones of Green Light drug users, and the scans look similar. After painting a Confederate statue, Anissa gets arrested and is bailed out by Jefferson. Later on, Gambi tests Jefferson's powers. Jefferson tells Gambi that he knows that Tobias is out there somewhere and he is going to kill Tobias for killing his father. The next day, Gambi talks to Lynn and tells her to stop Jefferson from killing Tobias, however, Lynn does not want anything to do with it. Anissa visits Lynn at work and asks her to go over Alvin's research.

Jefferson suits up as Black Lightning and visits Tobias' doctor, which Jefferson learns is being blackmailed with the fate of his family. Jefferson gives the doctor a phone so he can call him when Tobias shows up, where Jefferson will take down Tobias once and for all. The next day, Jefferson learns that Jenifer is getting cyber bullied by Khalil. Jefferson talks to his daughter where she visits Khalil. There, Khalil blames his wheelchair bounded life on Jenifer, so the two decide to have a break. Jefferson picks up Jenifer and then gets a call from the doctor. Meanwhile, Anissa suits up and destroys the Confederate statue with her super strength. Anissa gets back in her car and calls her mother, Lynn to show her, her abilities.

On top of a rooftop, and vengeful Jefferson Pierce looks down at Tobias, Toledo, and Syonide are getting out of a car. Gambi calls Jefferson through the suit and tells Jefferson to stop what he is doing before he crosses a line he will regret. Lynn then calls Jefferson and tells him to stop, however, Jefferson hears from Lynn's end that there is a break in at her work. At Lynn's workplace, Anissa finds some criminals holding her mother hostage. Anissa eats some bullets and then knocks out the criminals. While trying to untie her tapped mouthed mother, Black Lightning shows up and believes that Anissa is the criminal who is holding Lynn hostage. Black Lightning has a fight with Anissa, as she manages to hold her own against her father. After knocking Black Lightning down, Anissa believes she won the fight, however, Black Lightning gets up and smashes Anissa down. Jefferson walks over to who he believes is a criminal, and he sees the face of Anissa and cradles Anissa in his arms.

Gambi picks up the Pierce family in his van. Meanwhile, Tobias recruits Khalilin his posy and tells him that he will walk and feel strength like never before. Later on, Gambi visits Lady Eve and he tells her to leave the Pierce family alone. She tells him that if he says anything about her, she will spill the truth on him. The episode ends with Anissa waking up and being greeted by Lynn, she turns around and sees her father, Jefferson, as Black Lightning.

Overall, this episode of Black Lightning was by far one of my personal favorite of the season so far. The episode tied the plot of Anissa's Thunder storyline with that of Black Lightning's in an awesome way. In Anissa's storyline, I do wish that we saw more of her seeking answers to her grandfather's research as a vigilante, I guess that will happen later this season. Later in the season, we will also see Anissa get a suit upgrade, as we got a preview of before the season premiered. The suit will be made by Gambi. The Black Lightning story in the episode was very interesting. I liked the idea that he was so tempted to kill Tobias. I do feel as though that his reaction to seeing Tobias was a little more intense like Jefferson speculated that Tobias was still alive, and then he sees with his own eyes that he is really alive, and that makes him goes nuts.

This episode had potentially one of the coolest fight scenes in not only the show but in the DCTV shows. That Thunder versus Black Lightning fight was one of the coolest things I have seen. With the clash of the fighting styles, we see how the amateur of Thunder used her abilities more than her skill to nearly winning against Black Lightning who used his skills of fighting from over the years. Thunder's powers were fleshed out so much more in the episode, we learn she is bulletproof, and she can absorb the lightning produced by her father. This scene if you cannot tell was my favorite in the episode. I am so excited that the show is not wasting any more time in making Anissa a full-blown hero.

The cast of the episode was great as always. Starring in the episode we had Cress Willaims (Jefferson Pierce/ Black Lightning), Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce), China Ann McClain (Jenifer Pierce)Christine Adamas (Lynn Pierce), James Remar (Peter Gambi), Damon Gupton (Inspector Henderson), and Marvin Jones III (Tobias Whale).

In conclusion, this episode of Black Lightning was an awesome episode. There was not too much set up with the story of Anissa in the beginning, however, there was a decent story with Jefferson. However, that end fight scene was some epic, as well as the set up with the past of Gambi; the director, Benny Boom did a fantastic job, and therefore this episode of Black Lightning gets an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. You can click on the left for the latest Flash and the right for latest Legends of Tomorrow. As always thanks for reading, take care.
