BLACK LIGHTNING "AND THEN THE DEVIL BROUGHT THE PLAGUE: THE BOOK OFGREEN LIGHT" REVIEW

Season 1 Episode 5:

Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Black Lightning and this episode we see how Tobias is slowly coming into the spotlight and how Jefferson might react to when he finds out he is still alive. We also see the development of Anissa becoming a superhero, as well as Jenifer developing her powers. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens focuses on Jefferson Pierce out as Black Lightning, saving the streets of Freeland in the night. After stopping some police brutality, Jefferson experiences a severe headache which distracts him, thus Jefferson heads back. Meanwhile, Gambi gets a visit from Tobias who is interrogating Gambi for the identity of Black Lightning. As a good friend/ father figure, Gambi doesn't crack and instead tells Tobias that visiting him broke the deal that they had. Later on, Jefferson goes to confront a man about the production of Green Light as he finds out that a man named Joey Toledo has the drug. Jefferson thought that Toledo was dead, so back at the Lightning cave, Jefferson is mad at Gambi for not telling him. Jefferson suffers from a headache and collapses on the ground with Lynn coming over to check on Jefferson.

At a skating rink, Jenifer gets bullied by some other girls. After one of them attempts to attack her, Jenifer uses her reflexes to take both the girls down, shocked by what she just did, she rushes home. Later on, the girls that were injured visit Jefferson and Lynn and tell them what happened. When Jenifer comes home, Lynn growls Jenifer, while Jefferson is impressed that Jenifer held her own against two people. Meanwhile, Tobias and his sister, Toni go visit their father who is now an old man. Not forgiving him after their childhood abuse, Tobias cracks his father's back, leaving him dying on the ground.

Anissa is coming to terms with the powers she has. She starts to investigate what her grandfather, Alvin Pierce's, research was about and learns that he was investigating the disappearance of five teens, years ago, however, the publishing company did not publish the research. Anissa visits one of Alvin's colleagues. When asking about the research, Anissa is kicked out from the office of the colleague. The next day, Anissa visits the colleague once again who hands her a box full of Alvin's research. The colleague tells Anissa to not search too deep as "they" are always "listening". Anissa comes to the decision that she needs to become a superhero. After trying on her Cat Woman suit, Anissa rips it and goes shopping for a new suit. Probably maxing out her credit card, Anissa gets suited up and goes to search through a storage unit which has more of Alvin's research.

Inspector Henderson gets a visit from Black Lightning who tells Jefferson the whereabouts of Toldeo. Geared up and ready, Jefferson is about to face Toledo. After using his girl-friends phone, Jefferson baits Toldeo as the two have a fight in a car park. After suffering from another headache, Jefferson falls to the ground, as Toldeo runs away, winning the fight.

Overall, this episode of Black Lighting was an alright episode. There was not too much going on in the episode,  but the stuff that was happening was awesome. I want to start off and say that this episode has one hell of a title. But in the actual episode, I enjoyed the Black Lightning plot with the Green Light. It was a great story arc that has been going on, and I am excited to see how it concludes. In the episode, we saw how Jefferson was made at Gambi for hiding information on Toldeo, so when Jefferson finds out that Tobias is alive and Gambi knew, there will be a divide in the duo, a major one. The episode did a number of great things. The music was, of course, awesome, the cinematography was great in this episode as well. The last shot of this episode absolutely awesome. Seeing Black Lighting in pain on the ground was such as cool shot. As we see the vulnerability of the character, with great lighting, that shot is rememberable, and what a cliffhanger to end on.

The Anissa storyline in the episode was one of the better ones. I enjoyed seeing the character picking out a costume. There was the making fun of the spandex Cat Woman suit like it rips with a sudden movement. But the costume that Anissa is wearing is far from what she will end up looking like. However, the story is very interesting. It seems like Alvin was investigating what was most likely an organization who abducted kids and experiment on them. I would not be surprised if Jefferson and Tobias were abducted and experimented on, thus giving them powers. But that means there are other enhanced individuals which will probably appear in the season, if not next season, so that will be interesting. If I had to be honest, the Anissa storyline is probably my favorite story in the series, as it is going down this dark, mysterious path.

James Remar was great in this episode was Gambi. The character has this complex story to him with the way that he is hiding the truth about Tobias being alive from Jefferson. The regrets are seen in his facial expression when he was confronted by Tobias, and I am curious to see how the story with him plays about. The rest of the cast in the episode was great, we had Cress Willaims (Jefferson Pierce/ Black Lightning), Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce), China Ann McClain (Jenifer Pierce)Christine Adamas (Lynn Pierce), Damon Gupton (Inspector Henderson), Edwina Findley Dickerson (Toni), and Marvin Jones III (Tobias Whale).

In conclusion, this episode of Black Lightning was an alright episode. There was not too much going on, however, the stuff that was happening with Gambi, and especially Anissa, was extremely exciting and sets up some awesome stories that we will see play out further in this season. I will give this episode of Black Lightning a 7.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below.
