SUPERGIRL "FOR GOOD" REVIEW
Season 3 Episode 12:
Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Supergirl where we see the development of the World Killer's arc, as well as some really awesome Luthor scenes which we will get to in a bit. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.
The episode opens with Kara having a nightmare about another World Killer. Later that day, Alex is doing some tests on Sam at L Corp, to see why Sam has been blacking out. Meanwhile, James and Lena are walking down the street where they encounter Morgan Edge. Lena and Morgan exchange some words and Morgan leaves. In his car, Morgan has no control, his car is hacked. Morgan gets out of his car before it falls off the road and explodes.
Later on, Morgan goes to CatCo where he confronts Lena for trying to kill him. Later on, Eve gives Lena her coffee. Lean drinks it and she collapses on the ground as it is poison. Kara takes Lena to the DEO while, James asks Eve where the coffee came from, which is from the kart outside. James goes outside and finds a man running away. James chases him down. The man is then shot from an anonymous area. At the DEO, Lena is cured of the poison, and she heads back to CatCo. James tells Lena that the guy who made the coffee was killed and there was no bullet found. Later on, Lena looks through some LCorp files and finds the schematics for the disintegrating bullet. Lena goes to a warehouse where she finds her mother, Lilli, who tells Lena that she is going to kill Morgan Edge after all that he has done to her.
At CatCo, Lena tells Kara that a few months ago she attempted to murder Morgan. Lena then tells Kara that Lilli is going to kill Morgan, and she knows how she may be able to stop him. At a gala, Kara and Lena are dressed up. Kara distracts the bodyguard while Lena goes to talk to Morgan. Lena warns him that drones controlled by Lilli are going to kill him. Lena said that she will save Morgan is he admits he crimes on a recorder. The drones come, and Morgan runs away. Kara suits up as Supergirl and then takes down the drones. Lilli then comes to the gala where she suits up in Lex Luthor's armor. Kara gets some slight Kryptonite poisoning, but then Mon-El comes and helps out Kara, Winn also hacks some of the other drones to fight against Lilli. Morgan runs away with the recorder, and Lena chases after him. The Guardian stops Morgan and gives the recorder back to Lena. Back in the sky Kara and Mon manage to take down Lilli in the suit.
After the fight, Kara and James get out of their superhero get up's and Lena and Morgan go to prison. Later on, Alex tells Sam that her scans show that she is perfectly fine. The episode ends in the DEO where Winn, Mon, and Kara close down their World Killer list, and Kara points out the World Killer she saw in her nightmare; who they are going to go get.
Overall, this episode was an average episode. The Lena focused episode was not too much to remember. Having Lena as a protagonist is not too great of an idea. The character is kind of unlikeable, especially when we focus on her actions and motivations. One thing that annoyed me in the episode was how Kara just sort of let Lena's attempted murder on Morgan slide. This is something that should have had major repercussions, and something that could and should have shattered the friendship between the two. Lena's actions were the polar opposite of the principles of the Girl of Steel. I feel like Lena should have been close to turning into a villain in the series in this episode.
One thing that also annoys me about this season is some of the character relationship writing. Especially between Kara and Sam. There was no set up to make a believable relationship between Sam and Kara. I buy the friendship between Sam and Alex, and partly between Sam and Lena. I get what the show is trying to do. Give Kara a dilemma of stopping Sam. The only reason why us the audience will feel remorse for Reign/ Sam is that of the way her personal, regular life has been set up, so when the final showdown goes down, it is going to be uneasy to sell why Kara would feel remorse for Reign/ Sam.
There were some highlights in the episode, such as the speech that Martian Manhunter gave to Kara. It was a great speech that was kind of dismissed. J'onn told Kara that she sees the best in the people. Kara applied that to Lena but not Lilli or Morgan. In the episode, we also saw Mon-El in the comic book suit. It was in the dark, but he was still wearing it. In the next episode, we will hopefully see the suit in full daylight. But the main highlight of the episode was definitely the Luthor mech suit. That suit is from the comics and has been something Lex Luthor has dawned while fighting Superman, so it was great that it appeared in this episode. The suit was rumored to appear in Batman vs Superman, so I believe Supergirl is the first time that the suit has appeared in live action.
The cast of the episode was great in delivering their performances. Although I do have to say at times so the dialogue delivered was a little stiff, in a way where not much expression was placed. But starring in the episode we had Melissa Benoist (Kara/ Supergirl), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), Mechad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Adrian Pasdar (Morgan Edge), Brenda Strong (Lilli Luthor), Andrea Brooks (Eve Tessmacher), Chris Wood (Mon-El), Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott), David Harewood (J'onn/ Martian Manhunter), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), and Odette Annable (Samantha Arias/Reign).
Overall, this episode of Supergirl was an average episode as it focused on Lena Luthor who is an unlikable protagonist which made the character's choices in the episode not feel in line with the tone of the characters. This episode did have its highlights with the Luthor suit and all. I will give this episode of Supergirl a 7.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on this episode down in the comments below, like what was your favorite scene?
