RIVERDALE "THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE" REVIEW

Chapter 23:

Hey, everyone, we are back with brand new Riverdale episodes. With all new stuff to speculate about, let's do a small recap of the episode and discuss some stuff from the episode with the Black Hood and the other villains in the season. So spoilers for the episode ahead, let's recap,

In the episode, Archie Andrews is approached by FBI agent, Arthur Adams who tells Archie that he is looking out at Hiram Lodge, because he believes he is involved in suspicious activity, and Adams wants Archie to find answers for the FBI about Hiram, and what happened to his partner's the St.Clair's.

Also in the episode, South-side High is shut down due to Jingle Jangle production. However, we learn that the Mayor shut it down so the Lodges can buy the land. The South-side High students are transferred to Riverdale high, so Jughead is back with his friends. In the school, the South-side students are looked at as outsiders by some of the Riverdale students such as Reggie and Cheryl. Principle Wetherbee tells the South-side students that they are not allowed to wear any gang memorabilia. Sweat Pea and Toni follow the rules, however, Jughead does not listen and is then expelled from school. Later on, Jughead comes to school, not wearing Serpent uniform, as he sets up a Serpent club in school.

Archie has dinner with the Lodges where he tries to get answers to what happened to the St.Clair's, which the Lodge to not tell him the truth. Later on, Archie talks to Cheryl and learns that she took pictures of him and Betty kissing from the last episode, Cheryl also tells Archie that Nick St.Clair attempted to assault Veronica. Archie talks with Agent Adams and tells him that Nick nearly assaulted Veronica. Archie asks Agent Adams that if he continues to gather information for the FBI, that his father, Fred, and Veronica do not get affected.

At night, Archie goes to visit Cheryl. Archie tells Cheryl that he can get Cheryl another cheek from Nick. Dressed in one of Jason's suit, Archie visits Nick in New York where he asks for a check from Nick, which he delivers on. Archie asks Nick how he injured his legs, Nick says he was in a skiing accident. Archie beats Nick up and leaves with the check. Back home, Archie tells Agents Adams that Nick was in a ski accident which they both know is not true. The next day Veronica learns that Nick was bet up by Archie. Later at Pops Veronica sees that Archie is acting differently. Archie tells Veronica that Cheryl used leverage on him of a picture of him kissing Betty for Archie to get Cheryl a check. Archie tells Veronica that they kissed when they all broke up and right before they were nearly being buried alive. Archie apologizes and Veronica forgives him.

While all that was going on, Betty finds Polly at home. Polly said she had the twins and she is picking stuff up for the children. The two sisters part ways and Betty sleeps on the news for a little while. Betty then tells her parents that Polly had the twins. Feeling bad that her parents are missing one of their children, Betty attempts to track down her missing older brother. After gathering information, Betty tells her parents that their son, Chic, is in Riverdale. Betty and Alice are on board with bringing him home while Hal is not. Alice and Betty go to some apartments where Chic is. They find their missing family member and learn that he does not want anything to do with them as he is living a sad life. Alice has lost hope, while Betty is still committed to bringing her brother home. Betty goes back to the apartment and finds that Chic is being beaten up. Betty brings her injured brother home as he gets healed up. Chic stays the night in the Copper house as he watches over Betty sleeping in a creepy way.

To start off, this episode was a great way to start off the rest of the season. This episode was shot relatively well. I liked the camera shots that were used in the episode, it reflected the quality that the show has. In the episode, the Jughead storyline did feel a little unnecessary, in the way that it is only progressing the character of Jughead even though the story involves a handful of characters. I feel as though if the show wants a story for Jughead, there are a number of different ways that it could be done without it feeling useless. However, in the episode, the whole detective Archie story was really interesting. I like how the show is diving into the story of the villain that is Hiram Lodge, and how he may be the connection of everything such as the Black Hood and potentially Chic. It also neat that Archie could be the one who uncovers the plot, unlike last season.

Now to speculate, it seems like Hiram Lodge is set up to be the ultimate villain of the season or even the series. With the story progressing I believe that we will see the ties between Hiram and the Black Hood; who is most likely still alive as it was not the janitor. We could potentially see Hiram team up with Chic, somehow. Chic could become some sort of variation of the Black Hood, and terrorize the neighborhood, thus lowering the property value making it easier for Hiram to buy up Riverdale, which does look like Hiram's ultimate goal. Oh, and I also do not believe that Chic is the Black Hood or at least the one that shot Fred and killed Miss. Grundy.

The cast of the episode was great as always, we saw the introduction of some new characters, who all played their roles in a way which fitted the show. In the episode, we had KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge),  John Behlmann (Agent Arthur Adams), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge), Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge), Graham Phillips (Nick St.Clair), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones), Skeet Ulrich (FP Jones), Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz), Jordan Connor (Sweat Pea), Cassey Cott (Kevin Keller), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Mädchen Amick (Alice Cooper), Lochlyn Munro (Hal Cooper), and hart Denton (Chic Cooper).

In conclusion, this episode of Riverdale was a great way to start the season. With some great film techniques, some interesting plot threads and great acting, this made for an overall great episode of Riverdale. I will give this episode of Riverdale an 8.5 out of 10. Please comment below your thoughts on this episode of Riverdale down below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
