BLACK LIGHTNING "LAWANDA: THE BOOK OF HOPE" REVIEW

Season 1 Episode 2:

Hey everyone, we are back with the review of the second episode of Black Lightning, and in this episode we see Jefferson Pierce committing to becoming the Black Lightning once again, as well as Anissa developing her powers. Spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

In the episode, we see that Jefferson has sopme electic shocks which pulse through his veins, and his ex-wife, Lynn helps him. The next day at school, Jefferson holds a community meeting where he learns that an old student of his, Lawanda White, had her daughter abducted by the 100 gang, however, the police are not getting involved. Jefferson talks to Inspector Henderson about this issue and he says that there is no proof the Lawanda's daughter was abducted.

Later on, Jeniffer is at home and a child employee of Lala comes to Jenifer and shoots her with a water gun. Jefferson goes to visit Lala where he asks about Lawanda's daughter, and he tells Lala that they had a deal to stay away from the school and his family, however, Lala is ignoring the deal. Jefferson goes to visit Peter who tells Jefferson that if they get Lala's worker, Will, they can get information from him to the police. Later at night, we see Lala kill Will.

The next day, Jefferson visits Lawanda outside a motel where Lala stays. Jefferson tells Lawanda to stay in her car as she could get killed, and her daughter could come home to a dead mother. Later at night when Jefferson is home, we see Lawanda confront Lala with two camera's (one in her car), and Lala kills Lawanda. We see Inspector Henderson investigate the scene and he calls Jefferson to tell him about Lawanda. Jefferson tells Lynn that he could have prevented the murder from being Black Lightning. Jefferson says that Black Lightning can save more lives than Jefferson Pierce.

The next day Peter calls Jefferson and tells him that he found Will's body and he took his phone getting a location on Lala. At the school we see Jenifer being told off by her boyfriend, Khalil for drinking in school. Meanwhile, we see Peter and Lynn having a conversation about Black Lightning.

That night, Jefferson is suited up as Black Lightning and he is walking into the hotel where Lala is. Jefferson blasts Lala's goons on the first floor and takes the stair to the penthouse where Lala is. After fighting on the stairs, Jefferson goes into the penthouse where he starts to punch up Lala. The police come into the penthouse telling Jefferson and Lala to put their hands up. Both comply and then Jefferson runs away and jumps off the roof.

Back home, Jefferson tells Lynn that maybe he can make the Black Lightning thing can work. Lynn packs up her laptop and then leaves. That night Anissa is at her girlfriend's house having trouble sleeping. She goes to a store to get some sleeping pills, however, the place is getting robbed. She then throws the robber across the store, leaving the pills and walking home. The episode ends with Tobias visiting Lala in prison where he chokes Lala to death.

This episode of Black Lightning was a really neat episode. It built upon the idea of Jefferson coming back as the Black Lightning which is awesome. The idea that Jefferson has failed this city for the years Black Lightning was on hiatus is a great concept. There was some great humor in the episode of Jefferson getting back into shape with being a superhero again. The storyline with Lynn seems as though it will get old a little too quick. The idea that she does not want Jefferson to become Black Lightning will be interesting at the start but then turn to an old case soon if this plot in the show is not solved.

One thing I do want the show to do is to bring Anissa and Jenifer into being heroes by the end of the first season. It will be a neat dynamic seeing a superhero family on tv. We know that Anissa will get some sort of super suit as the Thunder character, that will most likely be soon with her discovery of her powers in this episode.

The cast of the episode was great, we had Cress Williams (Jefferson/ Black Lightning), Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce), China Ann McClain (Jenifer Pierce), Tracey Bonner (Lawanda White), James Remar (Peter Gambi), Christine Adamas (Lynn Pierce), Jordan Calloway (Chuck Clayton Khalil), Damon Gupton (Inspector Henderson), Dabier (Will), William Catlett (Lala), and Marvin Jones III (Tobias Whale).

In conclusion, this episode of Black Lightning was a great episode to bring forth the idea of Jefferson becoming the Black Lightning once again as well as Anissa becoming a hero in the series. I will give this episode of Black Lightning an 8 out of 10. Please comment your thoughts on the episode.
