RIVERDALE "DEATH PROOF" REVIEW
Chapter 19:
Hey everyone, we are back with a brand new review on Riverdale, season 2 episode 6. There was a lot that happened in the episode, regarding the Black Hood, and some other characters such as Jughead. So spoilers ahead of the episode, let's recap.
The episode focuses on the repercussions of the events of last weeks episode. Betty goes to see if Nick was killed by the Black Hood. Betty gets a call from the Black Hood who tells her that Nick was not a Riverdale citizen, thus he didn't kill him.
Betty is no in trouble with the Black Hood, but she instead finds her friends in trouble when they are pulled over by Mayor Mccoy and Sheriff Keller when they discover that the kids were doing Jingle Jangle, which Archie tells the officials that it is coming from the Southside. When the police do a raid of Sout-side high, Archie saves Jughead where they get advice from FP and go on a quest to confront the supplier of Jingle Jangle, rival gang, the Goolies. Meanwhile, Betty apologizes to Veronica and tells her about the Black Hood calls. Veronica forgives Betty, who gets a call from the Hood telling her the track down the supplier of Jingle Jangle. The two go on a quest to also find the supplier of Jingle Jangle, who goes by the name, the Sugar Man, who Cheryl told them about.
When Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica meet up, Jughead challenges the head of the Goolies to a car race where the winner can stay in Riverdale and do what they want, while the losing gang will leave Riverdale. After modifying a car, Archie and Jughead race against the Goolies, however, Archie stops Jughead in the middle of the race as he called the police on the Goolies who are up ahead. Evacuating the scene, the Jughead learns that the Goolie leader in the car is in prison and when he gets out he is going to be mad.
Cheryl confronts her mother on not pressing charges on Nick for what he nearly did to her. Veronica also tells her parents that Nick tried to assault her, and the Lodge parents told Veronica that Nick will pay. Cheryl also asks her mother of the Sugarman (who was an associate of Clifford), which she tells his identity to Cheryl. Cheryl then contacts Betty. Betty gets a call from the Black Hodd asking for the identity of the Sugar Man but Betty confronts him and tells her that she has control of him, which forces the Black Hood to hang up on Betty.
At Southside high, the Sugarman was none other than Jughead's teacher at South-side high, Mr. Phillips. We then see that Jughead and Betty are back together, and we also learn that Nick was in a car accident and he is seriously injured. The episode ends with Phillips in jail and the Black Hood shows up and shoots him.
Overall, this episode of Riverdale was an interesting on which dealt with a lot of storylines from the Sugarman to the Goolies. There was a good job in tying them all in at the end of the episode, however, there were points in the episode, where that did not work too well. Such as when Veronica and Betty were finding the Jingle Jangle suppliers, who were the Goolies who we saw make the JJ when we were following Archie and Jughead.
The Goolies plot of the episode was interesting as it is a plot which could tie everything in the show together, creating a civil war in Riverdale. As the Northside sees that the South-side is the cause of crime in the town and they declare independence from the Southside, which would aggravate the South Siders and cause a Riverdale civil war, with the Black Hood spilling blood on the street on both sides, and Hiram Lodge being one of the only people to gain something from lower property value.
To speculate on the identity of the Black Hood, the show forced so much foreshadowing on Sheriff Keller being the Black Hood. It was a little too on the nose, such as Keller showing up when Betty went to warn Nick at the begging of the episode, and at the end of the episode, the Black Hood knew the cell the Sugarman was in and he kills him. Someone who works at the police station, such as Keller would know that information. Keller as the Black Hood is way too obvious and the show is smarter than that. I believe that Keller has ties to the Black Hood, but is not the killer himself. Keller could have a deal with the Black Hood.
What I think is going down is that what if the Black Hood has super old ideologies, and the Black Hood sees homosexuality as a sin, so Sheriff Keller is working with the Black Hood to protect Kevin because of his sexuality. It would explain the sketchiness of Keller this season.
The cast of the episode was a great, there was KJ Apa (Archie Andrews), Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz), Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy), Cassey Cott (Kevin Keller), Charles Melton (Reggie Mantle), Madchen Amick (Alice Cooper), Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge), Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge), Graham Phillips (Nik St.Clair), Nathalie Boltt (Penelope Blossom), Robin Givens, (Mayor McCoy), Martin Cummins (Sheriff Tom Keller), Skeet Ulrich (FP Jones), Luke Perry (Fred Andrews), and Robert Baker (Mr. Phillips).
In conclusion, this episode of Riverdale was an exciting one which introduced a bunch of new twists and turns in the show. I will give the episode an 8 out of 10. Please comment on your thoughts on the episode, like what was your favorite scene? be sure to comment below along with any Black Hood theories you may have. As always thanks for reading, take care.
