THE FLASH "LUCK BE A LADY" REVIEW
Season 4 Episode 3:
The Flash is back with a brand new episode which brings us a new Meta-Human and some insight on the Thinker's master plan. So spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.
Opening up the episode is the Thinker, who is narrating the everyday life of Rebecca Sharpe, who is a woman who works as at a casino and cannot catch a break from bad luck. Three weeks ago Rebecca got fired from her job, and her car locked, forcing her to get on a bus which exposed her to dark matter giving her powers.
In present day we see Cisco, Barry, and Caitlin playing laser tag against a bunch of kids who beat them. The team goes out for lunch, but they get an alert on an interdimensional breach. The team goes back to STAR Labs where there is a breach. Earth-2, Harrison Wells comes out of the portal. Wally comes to see if Jesse is with Harry, but Harry tells Wally that Jesse needs a break.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Sharpe is at a bank where she manages to walk in and take money. Team Flash is notified of this so Barry races over to the scene of the crime, however, trips over on a barrel of marbles. Back at STAR Labs, Joe and Iris find the identity of Rebecca and her history; and discover that she only came to Central City 3 years ago, after the particle accelerator. The team states she is giving off a bad luck field when she experiences good luck, so she got her powers some other way.
Back at Joe's house, he and Cecile are having problems with the house's maintenance. Meanwhile, Barry gets back to his house where he finds Iris trying on a wedding dress. Barry tells Iris that they lost the booking of their wedding.
Later on Barry, Cisco and Harry go tracking dark matter surges in Central City. The three stop in the middle of a street where there is nothing to have created the dark matter. Barry then remembers that when he came out of the speed force, he ran out here, on top of a bus, and out of the city. Meaning that there is a busload of people that were exposed to the speed force making them Meta-Humans.
Back at STAR Labs, Cisco and Hary are arguing about the speed force, and how Harry told Cisco to not do anything on bringing Barry back without his supervision. Harry gets upset and is going to leave. Barry takes Joe to his house where Cecile discovers that there is a series of holes leaking water in the house. Barry gets a call and discovers Sharpe's location, at Jitters. Barry goes to see Sharpe and has a talk with her. He discovers that she does create bad luck around her. Sharpe manages to leave without Barry having to experience any bad luck.
At STAR Labs the team is miserable that they can not defeat Sharpe, or what Cisco dubs her, "Hazard". Barry gets called by Iris to go to a church so he races over. Iris tells Barry that they need to get married immediately before Hazard's bad luck takes over their lives. At the church, the priest gets an allergic reaction, putting off Iris and Barry's marriage. At STAR Labs, Cisco talks with Harry who is still around and hasn't gone back to Earth-2; because Jesse and her team booted off Harry from Earth-2 team Flash. An alert goes off and the team discovers that Hazard is dispursing a lot of bad around the city. Barry runs to the casino where Hazard is testing her luck by gambling. Barry attempts to capture Hazard with some new cuffs to dampener her powers. However, Barry trips over and handcuffs himself. A fire alarm goes off and everything goes to crap, with Bary get trapped by a sign.
The bad luck from Hazard dispurses through STAR Labs setting the particle accelerator to go off. Harry and Cisco go to stop it but fail. With seconds left before it goes off, Harry tells Cisco to leave it. The particle accelerator goes off and unleashes a force field which cancels out Hazard's luck. Barry manages to get up and apprehend Hazard.
Back at STAR Labs, Harry 'apologizes' to Cisco and decides to stay on Earth-1 with team Flash. Team Flash manages to get a scan of the bus that was affected by the speed force, knowing that there are 12 new metahumans, two of which they now. Wally comes to visit the team and he tells them that he is leaving. Wally says he is going to leave Central City. So the team says goodbye to Wally.
The team theorizes that theses Metahumans are coming up as they were affected from team Flash opening the speed force to get Barry back; the reason they got Barry back was that the Samuroid wanted to fight the Flash. So the person who is behind the Samuroid (Thinker) wanted these Meta-Humans to be made. We then cut to the Thinker who is spying on team Flash theorizing on him, via the Samuroid helmet.
The episode ends with Joe going back to his house where he finds Cecilie doing some repairs. Cecile tells Joe that she is pregnant, which Joe is stunned.
The episode was a really awesome self-contained story which did tease story threads about the rest of the season. So the new villain, Hazard was a really awesome character who I personally felt sympathy for. Yes she did seem like a villain when she was on her robbery streak, but there could have been some type of sympathetic scene where Hazard realizes that her life is as pathetic as it used to be, but this time she is in prison. But I understand why the writers did not want a heavy scene to bring down the tone of the episode, which was great the way it was.
The end scene of the episode was a strange one, I can not wait to see what happens with this, it will be interesting. I am also excited to see what happens with the Thinker plot, and how that plays out into the season, with the new metahumans.
The cast of the episode was great. I really enjoyed Tom Cavanagh as Harry Wells, from Earth-2. His lines border lined cringey, but it gave a different tone to the character in a way which it didn't feel like a completely different character. Sugar Lyn Beard was great as Hazard in the episode. She was an interesting villain on the show, someone we haven't seen before in terms of their motivation. Keiynan Lonsdale, Wally West is leaving the Flash (well for now) which it is sad to see him leave the show, but it is some great character development. Hopefully, he goes on another show like Legends of Tomorrow or possibly Titans (if that is set in the DCTV universe).
I liked seeing Grant Gustin as the Flash, bringing a lighter Flash. The rest of the cast was great as well, we had Candice Patton (Iris West), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Danielle Nicolet (Cecilie Horton), Kim Engelbrecht (Mechanic), and Neil Sanders (Thinker).
Overall the episode was a great one which bought a new interesting villain in the form of Hazard. The tone of the episode was on point, however, there were a couple cringey moments in the episode, but it was overall enjoyable. I will give the episode an 8.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the film down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
