SUPERGIRL "THE FAITHFUL" REVIEW

Season 3 Episode 4:

Hey, everyone, we are back with a brand new episode of Supergirl where we see the cult of Rao introduced into the series, so spoilers ahead for the episode, let's recap.

The episode opens to Thomas Coville on the plane that Kara saves in the first episode. After witnessing Kara's first act of heroism, he decides to create a religion worshiping the Girl of Steel. Two years later in the present day, Samantha is busy working at her daughter's soccer game, she is approached by a mysterious lady who gives her a pamphlet of the religion of Rao.

Back at work, Samantha is visited by Lena and Kara. Kara sees the cult of Rao pamphlet on Sam's desk and takes it. At work, Kara is preparing to leave to a cult meeting, which James and Winn tag along for. At the cult meeting, Kara sees Thomas leading the group and telling everyone that they need to worship Supergirl. Thomas says a prayer that is one Kara knew on Krypton, a prayer about the Kryptonian god of Rao.

Freaked out by the Cult, Kara goes to the DEO and tells Winn to research Coville's history. Back at her apartment, Kara is having a girls night, that is until she hears danger in the city. Kara suits up and flies toward to noise of danger where she saves a man from falling into a fire. The man kneels to Kara after she saves him and Kara realizes that the man started the fire to see if Supergirl would save him, so he could be accepted into the cult of Rao.

The next day Kara interviews Coville about his cult, and he automatically sees that Kara is Supergirl from her eyes. Kara tells Coville to stop the cult as it is causing people to endanger themselves. However, Coville says that "even gods get misguided sometimes". Coville has a blue crystal which Kara takes from him.

Back at CatCo, Kara and James activate a hologram from the blue crystal that she got from Coville which is information from Krypton. Kara goes to the DEO where she gets Winn to run some scans related to Kryptonian artifacts because the crystal Kara got was from a capsule that landed on Earth informing people of the information and culture of Krypton. Winn finds a signal of the capsule that is located in a stadium. However, the capsule is degrading and is about to explode. Kara suits up as Supergirl and flies out to stop Coville.

At the stadium, Kara finds that is heavily populated. Below the stadium is Coville telling his cult that Supergirl will come and save them and the people above them. Supergirl arrives and she tells Coville to stop. She goes over to the capsule to stop it, however, it has Kryptonite in it, poisoning Kara.

Kara quickly grabs a sharp material beside her her and cuts her hand. She tells the cult that she is exactly like them, theya ll run away except for Coville. Alex arrives and she throws away the Kryptonite from the capsule. Kara gains some strength and uses her heat vision to burn a hole into the ground. Alex and Coville get the capsule and push it into the hole, letting it explode in the Earth, not harming anyone.

Later on, Kara speaks to Coville in prison. He says that he will keep her identity a secret as he can't remember her regular name. Later on Kara, Alex and Lena go to Sam's daughter's singing performance. Later on, we then see Kara praying with a hologram of her mother.

The episode ends with Sam at her house about to take a bath, she looks in the mirror and finds she is covered in tattoos of mysterious symbols. A demon type figure comes beside her with the face of Alura Zor El flashing under the mask. Screaming and crying on the floor, Sam's daughter asks what she is doing,  which Sam discovers that she was imagining her whole nightmare.

The episode ends with a 22-hour flashback, Kara uses her heat vision to burn a whole, the capsule explodes under National City, which triggers a bomb setting off power to go to an alien ship under the city, which triggers a mysterious alien in a pod to awaken.

So initial thoughts on the episode. It was an interesting concept having the cult of Rao. Seeing how different people reacted to the rise of Supergirl, coming out and saving them. Something we haven't seen in superhero tv shows. I would like to see this cult develop more in the series. But from that storyline, I enjoyed seeing Kara react to the cult, in the way they treated her as a god, which she didn't want, and she proved her point in a great way.

In the episode, there was some not so great camera work. It felt unstable at times, not on purpose. I do hope that changes in the future. That is something that I am not fond of the CW shows, some of the camera work.  The CG in the episode was not that great. Especially with the fire and the explosions in the episode, the CG looked off.

Let's talk about the ending of the episode. We see the alien ship under the city get power which awakens some aliens. Those aliens may be the demon type figures that Samantha saw in her vision. So what I think is that those aliens will show Samantha the dark side of Supergirl which will pitch the two against each other.

Melissa Benoist was fantastic as Supergirl in the episode. I enjoyed the way she played Kara in the episode experiencing all this weird shit and seeing how people perceived her. It made for an interesting character arc in the episode which was pulled off with the acting of Benoist. The rest of the main cast was great we had Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Mechad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen),  Jeremy Joran (Winn Schott), David Harewood (Martian Manhunter), Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor), Florina Lima (Maggie Sawyer),  Emma Tremblay (Ruby Arias), Chad Lowe (Thomas Coville) and Erica Durance (Alura Zor-El).

Samantha Oddette is great on the show and I enjoy that they are building out a relationship with her and Kara so there will be tension when she becomes the main villain. I believe that in the season she will discover from the aliens under National City, that Alura Zor El created her [Reign], which she is going to blame Kara for her creation, even though it was Kara's mother that was at fault.
There was also an image of Reign released, and I have to say, I could do without the mask. The mask makes the character look like she belonged in Daredevil 2003. But the rest of the costume looks great, a parallel to the comics. Even though the costume is not like what Reign looked liked in the comics, it is an average substitute.

Overall, the episode was an interesting, as it explored parts of how people reacted to aliens. Most of the characters in the episode were great, but there were some scenes which were irrelevant as they did not service the plot in any way. I will give "The Faithful" a 7.5 out of 10. I would like to hear your thoughts on the episode down in the comments below. As always thanks for reading, take care.
