RICK AND MORTY SEASON 4 RELEASE DATE BREAKDOWN
Hey everyone, it is coming back. Rick and Morty season four is set to air this November. That is November 2019, which is nearly two years since season three last aired back in 2017 and ended with the Smith family going back to a relative status quo.
Why So Long?
It has been a long time coming, however, long gaps in between seasons is something which is not unusual for the show, however, this is the longest break the show has ever taken. From seasons one to two, there was a gap just over a year. Between seasons two and three there was a year and a half gap, and now between seasons three and four, it is at a record of two years.
The reason why season four took so long to get around is because of all the back end deals that Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland had to make with Adult Swim. If you remember, Rick and Morty have been renewed for 70 episodes. So there are a few seasons under their belt. This deal I assume would have taken a lot of time to get signed off. Other than that, I assume that the staff on the show wanted to make a longer season this time around. Season three was originally supposed to be 14 episodes instead of ten. So I assume that season four will have a 14 episode run, which would take a while to animate and to voice over, and all the other work which comes with animating a television series.
The Story
I did a whole list on everything that we could see in season four back in 2017 which will be linked down the bottom.
One of the long-running threads in the series has been evil Morty. The last time we touched base with the character was in episode 307, the "Ricklantis Mixup". In that episode evil, Morty took over the new citadel of Ricks and became a dictator of the interdimensional station for Ricks and Mortys. I do not think that the reveal of evil Morty's origin will be revealed in season four. There are dozens of other episodes after season four which will most likely explore that.
I am not too sure if the clone Beth plot will be addressed at all in the season. The plot was slightly concluded at the end of season three with Jerry and Beth getting back together, however, there was no confirmation that the Beth that we saw post 309 was the real Beth or a clone of Beth.
In conclusion, I am very excited that Rick and Morty is returning later this year because it has been so long without any new episodes, and I am just curious where the grandfather and grandson will go in the multiverse and other plot threads which may be addressed throughout the season.
