GAME OF THRONES "THE LAST OF THE STARKS" REVIEW

Season 8 Episode 4:

Hey everyone, we are back with another episode of Game of Thrones season 8, directed by David Nutter, where we pick up with the plot that we have been wanting to see since the first episode, and that was the white walker invasion to take the Iron Throne from Cersi. So spoilers ahead for the episode lets recap.

In Winterfell, Jon says a speech to the people about the fallen from the battle, as the corpses are lit ablaze. Everyone then gathers in the hall for a meal and drinks. Daenerys talks to Jon in private about their relationship and also who is going to be on the throne. Jon promises that he does not want the throne, however, Daenerys does not believe him.

Jon tells Sansa and Arya about his real parents, and Sansa tells Tyrion who tells Varys. Daenerys leaves for Kings Landing along with Grey Worm, Missandie, Varys, and Tyrion, as they go to claim the capital of Westeros. Daenerys rides Drogon and Rhaegal to take down the Golden Company ships which Cersei hired, and they somehow kill Rhaegal and start attacking the ships that the rest of Daneyreyes' crew is on, and Missandei goes missing.

Back in Winterfell, Jon says goodbye to Tormund (who heads to back to the North), and Sam as he heads off to Kings Landing to meet up with Daneyryes. Back in Kings Landing, Daneryes, Varys, Grey Worm, and Tyrion meet outside the walls of the capital as Cersei, the Mountain, and a captured Missandei are on a platform above. Tyrion goes to meet with Qyburn as he tells him to tell his sister to surrender her place as Queen of Westeros, and save Missandei, for the sake of her child. Qyburn tells Cersei, however, she orders for Missandei to be pushed to her death, as Daenerys walks back to ride Dragon and start a war.

So... I just want to say, how? There are several issues in the episode in terms of the plot of the episode and where all of this is heading. However, nevertheless, let's take a look at this episode first. My biggest complaint with the episode is the death of Rheagal. It was sad seeing this powerful character just go down in such a mundane way.

Rhaegal being killed by a regular spear was just weird ... unnatural in a way. It seemed like the episode just ignored the power levels of the dragon, as the dragon was taken down by something that should have been a minor inconvenience. To be honest, at first, I thought that Rhaegal was just knocked out into the water because it felt like it was an event that was brushed aside, which takes me to the second complaint about Rhaegal's death.

The impact of Rhaegal's death felt absent in the episode. It was done in a way where Danereyes seemed like she was not that concerned that basically, one of her children was just killed. This is also why at first I thought that Rhaegal was not actually dead, and just knocked out, there was not the sense of anger or immediate grief in the reaction. This is not inherently Emilia Clarke's fault because she is interacting with CG characters, I feel like the director was the one who was to tell everyone on set how dire this situation is. I felt like Daneryes could have pushed her path of revenge based on the death of Rhaegal, and that could have evolved with the death of Missandei.

In terms of where the episode is heading, I suppose I am content with it at this point. I am still annoyed that the Knight King is dead, and is not the main villain of the series, highlighting the idea of the living having to put aside their differences to fight one thing they have in common, that being the plague of death. But I guess going back to the family squabbles that we have seen before is kind of cool, and Danereyes verses Cersei will be an interesting battle for the throne, especially since Drogon can be killed with a regular spear.

The cast of the episode was great, and I feel like in a way they were underused weirdly. But nevertheless, starting in the episode was Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Conleth Hill (Lord Varys), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), Kit Harrington (Jon Snow/ Aegon Targaryen), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane/ The Hound), Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Anton Lesser (Qyburn), Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy),

In conclusion, this episode felt off, in terms of the direction that the story is taking. It just feels weird now not having the looming threat of the Knight King and the white walkers coming for the living. What annoyed me the most in the episode was the death of Rhaegal. It felt like the lore of the series was ignored we Rhaegal was killed, and it felt off, and as though there was a lack of care taken,
Rating: 5.8/10
