THE FLASH "SNOW PACK" REVIEW
Season 5 Episode 19:
Hey everyone, we are back with a new episode of the Flash, and in this episode we see the return of a villain we were introduced to earlier in this season, that being Icicle. We see many plot threads in this Jeff Cassidy directed episode, so spoilers ahead, lets recap.
Barry and Iris have an argument about how Barry took Nora back to 2049, where she learns about the negative speed force from Eobard Thawne. Meanwhile, future Grace captures present-day Grace.
At Tannhauser Labs, Caitlin's mother, Carla is ambushed by Icicle who steals a "prototype cryo-atomizer". While investigating the incident, Caitlin and Carla are captured by Icicle, while Sherlock resuscitates Barry and Joe who were taken down by the Jack Frost look-a-like.
Carla is taken by Icicle who is going to give her an ice persona using the deceive that he stole from the lab before. Barry, Sherloque and Joe track down Caitlin and Carla and Barry runs to them in a bunker. Barry saves Carla while Caitlin turns into Killer Frost to chase down Icicle. The ice father and daughter go on an ice chase. Icicle nearly kills Caitlin, however, he stops and reverts back to Thomas (Caitlin’s father). The two get back to the bunker where the Snow family reunites. However, Cicada shows up and fights Killer Frost. Cicada throws her dagger at Caitlin, however, Thomas takes the dagger instead of Caitlin and dies. Cicada grabs the cryo-atomizer and flees.
While that was happening, Iris and Ralph decide to go to the future, 2049 to bring Nora back using the time sphere. Ralph holds the guards back while Iris talks to Nora and Eobard. Nora ignores her mother and taps into the negative speed force to time travel back to 2019.
Anyway, with this episode focusing on Caitlin and her family, the episode felt rushed- and that’s not in a good way. What I mean by this is the way that the Icicle character was almost pushed to the side, and he didn’t feel like a developed character. There was a lack of emotion which could have been portrayed on screen. I wish that Caitlin as a character got a little more character growth from this whole story involving her father, and wish that carried into other episodes instead of just ending here.
I wish that the character of Caitlin Snow had a larger plot involved with Icicle, where he played a larger villain in the show which involved Killer Frost. I also wish Danielle Panabaker got more time to shine in the show, and instead of being pushed to a side character all the time. If the Icicle plot was stretched out a little longer and not rushed, we would have seen that, and a story which could have been compelling.
The Nora plot was an interesting story and one that I was so excited to see. I believe this is the first time we have seen or heard the negative speed force in the show and it was awesome to see the concept unfold on screen from the comics. It appears that the negative speed force is where Nora is getting her powers from now on, and that potentially may have corrupted her to a degree, fueling her negative thoughts towards her family. I wouldn’t be surprised that by the time we get to the season finale, we could see Nora potentially become the villain of that episode.
The cast of the episode was also great. I feel like everyone had a nearly equal amount of screen time which was interesting to a degree. However, the downside to that was that no one really got too much time to shine, and this episode could have focused on Danielle Panabaker's Killer Frost and build a more compelling story that wasn’t rushed where she could shine.
Starring in the episode was Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/ Killer Frost), Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/ The Flash), Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Tom Cavanaugh (Eobard Thawne/ Sherloque Wells), Susan Walters (Dr. Carla Tannhauser), Kyle Secor (Thomas Snow), Jessica Kennedy Parker (Nora West-Allen/ XS), Candice Patton (Iris West-Allen), Hartley Sawyer (Ralph Dibny/ Elongated Man), Sarah Carter (Grace Gibbons / Cicada).
In conclusion, this episode felt like it quickly tied up loose ends with the Icicle plot which a shame, as Caitlin Snow did not shine as a character when she could have. There were some other interesting concepts in the episode with the negative speed force.
Rating: 7.8/ 10
