SONIC THE HEDGEHOG TRAILER BREAKDOWN

After a series of leaked images and posters of the live action Sonic the Hedgehog, we have finally gotten a look at the official the fastest hedgehog alive. The Sonic the Hedgehog film is directed by Jeff Fowler and is coming out later this year in November, and seems like it will either be the worst $15 or best $15 I have spent on a movie ticket. So I guess, let’s take a look at what is happening in this film.

First things first, let’s take a look at Sonic himself, who is voiced by Ben Schwartz. The look is completely different from any version of Sonic where have seen in the games and cartoons. Sonic here looks oddly human. The eyes are separate and circle shaped, instead of being connected, or even just upside down semi-circles. The fur on the arms, I guess takes inspiration from the new Sonic which doesn’t have the light flesh colored arms, and there are also gloves absent from this Sonic, which are a little odd.

The look of Sonic in this live action film doesn’t look too good. This does not mean that Sonic is not a viable video game character to translate to live action, there are plenty of people who have photoshopped a more game accurate Sonic in live action.

But nevertheless, let’s take a look at the trailer itself.

It seems as though this film is a classic ‘title character A slips into a portal and ends up in our world’. This plot feels recycled, but if done right can work in a way. I do like the Sonic world, and the Green Hill zones inhabited by Sonic, Tails, and company.
Our world just seems like a weird place for Sonic to go, but I guess it could be fun seeing Sonic discovering Chilli dogs, and … crystal Pepsi? I don’t know.
Also, this small town that Sonic is in is called "Green Hills".

With Sonic showing up in our reality, it appears that the military needs a specialist to track down Sonic because he could pose a threat to humanity. So who better to call than Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), or as he is called now Eggman.
I am so excited to see Jim Carrey play Robotnik, and to see him go full Carrey. It will be interesting to see Carrey bring to life this quirky video game villain, and the wacky vehicles he will deploy to take down Sonic.
Also, it seems like by the end of the film Robotnik will go bald, as we do see at the end montage of the trailer.

The film is being set up as this sort of buddy cop film involving Sonic and this local police officer Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) who are out to expose Dr. Robotnik, and eventually return Sonic to his homeworld. It will be interesting to see a contrast between Sonic the Hedgehog and this officer, and there could possibly be some meaningful scenes where both characters realize the pros of their lifestyles due to the cons of the others.

Sonic’s running motion looks actually really awesome I do like the trail of blue behind Sonic running to help illustrate Sonic’s super speed. Blue lightning is also a neat addition to the super speed. It gives a sort of Flash vibe. The spinning motion that Sonic is famous for looks really neat. It seems like the filmmakers actually using the spinning in appropriate places, such as when Sonic has to tackle a large object and take it down. So I suppose that there is some genuine thought in the physics of how this film will work.

This is an interesting shot, it appears that Sonic can make portals with the rings he has collected. I get the idea of creating a portal because Sonic could be fast enough to punch a hole through space-time and create a portal himself to another place. This is ring portal is something that has never been done before in the games and is actually something that looks kind of cool, and an interesting twist.

In this scene, Dr. Robotnik is firing dozens of mussels at Sonic, and he is trying to stop them. I hope we get some speedster stopping time scenes like this in the Sonic film. I feel like in this film, there is going to be a scene where Sonic goes to a chili dog stand and steals like 50 chili dogs. It seems appropriate for this film.
Fun fact: Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the only ‘live action’ speedsters in cinema currently, besides the X-Men Quicksilver.

In conclusion, that does it for the breakdown of the Sonic the Hedgehog live action trailer. I am oddly excited for this film, I just don’t know why. The design of live action Sonic looks weird, but I am still interested to see this buddy-cop film with Sonic.
