GAME OF THRONES "WINTERFELL" REVIEW
Season 8 Episode 1:
So, the final season of Game of Thrones is upon us, and winter is officially here in this David Nutter directed episode. I haven't done any Game of Thrones reviews before, and since the episodes are longer than the usual 40-minute episodes of television I review, I will do a very small recap. So spoilers here, let's go.
Jon Snow returns to Winterfell with Daenerys Targaryen, who brings her army, and everyone she was with last season, along with her two surviving dragons, Rhaegal and Drogon, as they all learn that the wall has fallen, the Night King is coming down south with ice Viserion. Jon reunites with Bran, Sansa, and Arya, however, drama ensues when the people of Winterfell have lost some faith in Jon due to him being absent in the north, as he explains the threat the white walkers pose, and the help they need from Daenerys.
Meanwhile, in Kings Landing, Cersei gets her army from the Golden company (minus the elephants), as Euron promised, and manages to seduce her. Meanwhile, Theon rescues Yara before heading to Winterfell himself. Qyburn also hires Bronn to kill Tyrian and Jamie by Cersei's orders.
Jon and Daenerys have a dragon ride and kiss and then return to Winterfell. Daenerys meets Samwell as he learns that she killed his father and brother. Samwell goes to Jon and tells him about what happened to his family, and then he tells Jon the truth that Bran told him. That Jon Snow is actually named Aegon Targaryen, and that his parents are Lyanna Stak, and Rhaegar Targaryen. At the Last Hearth, survivors from the fall of the wall, Tormund, Beric, and Edd discover that the Night King killed the people at the castle, including Ned, as a message. The episode ends with Jamie showing up to Winterfell where he sees Bran.
Overall, this episode was an okay start to the season. Like most of the recent season premieres, this did feel like a little bit of a recap from season seven. However, there were a few interesting things in the episode that I am glad that they got to in this episode.
On a cinematic level, this episode looked great. The cinematography had a lot of wide shots to present the expansiveness of everything in the episode and it was something to marvel at.
The dragon riding scene was one of the coolest scenes in the episode. The CG for the dragons looked great and really bought them to life in an interesting way, especially with their interactions with the real human characters, like Jon kissing Daenerys. The 'race' part of the scene was great, the way that the camera moved was neat, and was just fun to watch.
I do have to say that my favorite scene in the episode was Jon Snow learning his true heritage, and who his parents really are. I do like the explainer that was presented as to why Ned had to pretend why Jon was his bastard son, as if the Mad King learned that Jon was his grandson, he would have potentially have killed him, and if not him, someone else would have tried to make an attempt on Aegon's life. Kit Harrington's performance in this scene was brilliant, and really captured the shock that this character would have if he realized that most of his life was a lie and that he has been messing around with his aunt.
The scene of Jamie showing up to Winterfell and seeing Bran in the wheelchair was also a brilliant scene. What a way to end an episode.
The cast of the episode was brilliant as always, and everyone did a great job. Starring in the episode was Kit Harrington (Jon Snow/ Aegon Targaryen), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Conleth Hill (Lord Varys), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane/ the Hound), Jerome Flynn (Bronn), Joe Dempsie (Gendry), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy),Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), Harry Grasby (Ned Umber), and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister).
In conclusion, that does it for this episode review of Game of Thrones was an exciting one although it was a glorified recap of season seven. There were several interesting scenes in the episode which tie up threads from last episode and start to develop the stories going forward in the final season of the show.
